Give Willy Taveras a chance
Published 3/31/2009 by Chad Dotson at Redleg Nation
... Ignoring 2010 for a moment, what does Taveras bring to the table in 2009? Taveras’s critics focus on a few specific items that are not without merit. First, his 2008 numbers with Colorado were simply dreadful: .251 batting average, .308 OBP, .296 SLG. Just horrific. On top of the fact that Taveras stunk at the plate, his defense the last two years in Colorado, by most measures, was not good at all. ...

Holy craap, Nederlands stuns Republica Dominicana!
Published 3/7/2009 by Daedalus (noreply@blogger.com) at Church of Baseball
Voltron gave up three runs to Nederlands today, which was enough for the loss in this gigantic, enormous, huge, massive upset in the first round of the World Baseball Classic. In the first inning alone, he threw 29 pitches. You only get 70 in this round. Baby Red Alexander Smit did not fare very well, either, as he only pitched to three batters, giving up a sac fly, a single, and an intentional walk. Havoc was caught stealing after getting a hit. Team Dominicana is the overwhelming favorite to win the whole thing. ...

... If Willy Taveras can be a regular outfielder, there’s no reason Brett Gardner can’t be, as well. In fact, he’s been working on putting the ball on the ground this off-season so that he can take advantage of the speed that Girardi and others seem to love. ...

See? John Heyman said so himself.
If you're interested, here are Willy's career stats.
Dye isn't young, but has been a solid major leaguer. Don't believe me, Jon? Take this! I think I'm being too hard on him. Willy is just the type of hitter Manager Dusty Baker loves. Everybody wins! Well....not so much the Reds. But others do.

... . Sure, Taveras has lots of speed and had a ton of infield hits (37 bunt singles in 2007!) but he is incapable of scoring runs. Even on that strong offensive 2007 Rockies team, which scored 860 runs, and in spite of hitting .320 and stealing 33 bags, Taveras managed a scant 64 runs. ...
Reds think speed
Published 12/28/2008 by Deaner (noreply@blogger.com) at Blue Collar Baseball
... I'm a old-school guy, so I like the new direction of the Reds outfield. Defense is a fundamental that the Reds have been severely lacking in, and speed never goes into a slump. Taveras' stats aren't very impressive (besides the SBs) but he's only 27, so he is liable to bounce back to 2005-2006 form, and a lot of what he does isn't going to show up on a stat sheet anyway. ...

... is entering his age 27 year and has proven himself to be ready for the big leagues. Taveras has proven he can't hit a lick, but, he does run fast, which is fine if you are mired two decades behind the rest of baseball, as Dusty and the Reds seem to be. There may be some defensive benefits here, but Willy has a 668 career OPS, including his two years in Coors Field, so Roberto Clemente's defense could not make up for an offensive black hole like that. Add in the fact that Cincy's home field is a hotbed for homers, it's a bizarro world decision, if indeed Taveras ends up ...

... Roger Clemens makes his first start for the Yankees today against the Pirates in Pittsburgh. I'm thinking Roger will be lucky to make it to the 5th inning... Willy Taveras is an example of how you have to look a bit deeper into the numbers. In the "old" days you would see a guy hitting .324 with 13 stolen bases and automatically think the guy is having a very good year. However, when you look closer at the numbers you see that Taveras only has an OBP of .378 despite the high batting average. That OBP sounds high but its not even in the top 3 on his own team. The 13 stolen bases seem a lot but consider he's been caught stealing 8 times. Then throw in the fact that his slugging percentage (.376) is less than his OBP and now that .324 batting average doesn't look as good as you might think... Don't get me wrong though - this could be a career year for Taveras but as the guy who sponsors his Baseball-Reference.com page puts ...
