... Wagner came out for the 11th, and worked to Wilson Betemit, hitting for Moylan. Mismatch, I figured, but Betemit worked the count to 2-2 and then drilled a shot high and deep to center, sailing towards the Home Run Apple and over the wall for a long, long HR, and giving the Braves the lead once again at 7-6. The Swedes were cheering. The Old Men appeared to be snoring, though few had left this game on a Friday night. Ambush. Wagner walked Andruw Jones with 2 outs before setting the Braves down and departing to a smattering of boos. ...
Nick Swisher For Nothing? Sure, Why Not?

Intern Bill is thrilled the Yankees got Nick Swisher on the cheap.
Late Wednesday, the New York Yankees acquired OF/1B Nick Swisher from the Chicago White Sox for INF Wilson Betemit, SP Jeff Marquez and another minor leaguer.
The move gives NY a potential 1B in the event they are not available to acquire Mark Teixeira via free agency, or a very good (and relatively inexpensive) corner OF option. The White Sox get a versatile infielder who is still arbitration eligible and might be a replacement level ...

Breaking Down the Swisher Deal

In the comments of the previous thread, a commenter asked that I analyze the trade of Nick Swisher and Kanekoa Texeira from the White Sox to the Yankees for Wilson Betemit, Jeff Marquez, and Jhonny Nunez. Good idea.
Swisher’s a little more known than most players of his caliber, thanks to his role in Moneyball. He’s a good player signed at a below-market contract through his age-31 season—guaranteed $22 million for the next three seasons with a $10.25 option for 2012. He had a down year last year, ...

Attempting to rationalize the Swisher trade

... ), and Betemit is a half-priced Juan Uribe (he comes with only half the glove). Somehow, a bad year for a former fringe All-Star is equivalent to bad years by a fringe prospect and an unremarkable utility infielder, and that's a big part of the reason why it seems like an awful deal on its face. Here's the other part -- in order for this trade to truly make sense, Swisher's going to have to fail. Swisher wasn't brought in last year to be an over-the-top piece -- he was presented as a long-term fixture with his affordable five-year contract. He might start out as a ...

In case you are living under a rock, the Yankees acquired Nick Swisher (he of Moneyball fame - and the cheap, young man's version of Jason Giambi) for Jeff Marquez, Wilson Betemit and Jhonny Nunez. What you may not know is just how long evil genius Brian Cashman was plotting the move (pretty much since he read Moneyball in April 2004). Lets review the moving parts in this trade and break down how the Yankees received them: Wilson Betemit The Yankees received Wilson Betemit for Scott Proctor who they had received for Robin Ventura ...

If we prorate that to Jeter’s number of plate appearances, Betemit can be expected to create about 99 runs over the course of a full season. This more than accounts for the difference James finds in their fielding stats, and still doesn’t factor in Betemit’s probable progression at the plate, and that Jeter will probably get worse. Smart platooning of Betemit could help as well. It could be the difference of a couple of wins this year, a big deal if we remember PECOTA predicts a ...
Pay no attention to the Brad Wilkerson rumos

An MLB Trade Rumors source says the Yanks may have expressed interest in Brad Wilkerson. I’d imagine the Yanks’ interest went a little bit like this: “We already have two guys capable of putting up a sub-.800 OPS at first base and a a third who can do what you can for a fraction of the cost. But if you want to ask the Red Sox for a laughable $21-million, three-year deal, we’ll help drive up the price.” There’s no place or desire in the Bronx for a 31-year-old who couldn’t really hit in Texas. According to PeteAbe, Wilson Betemit and the Yankees came to a deal today on for one-year worth $1.165 million. He made $405,000 dollars last year. Not bad.
Betemit is an important piece for the Yankees because of his ability to play any infield position. Maybe he’ll show something with bat this year if given more time at 1B.
