... is quietly developing into a star. His bat would be dangerous anywhere, let alone at Coors Field. Finally getting some attention after playing for the USA in the World Baseball Classic, Iannetta will give the rest of the NL West nightmares for years to come. ... VANDER WAL Well if we want someone off of the bench, who would be better than Vander Wal? As a member of the 1995 Rockies he played in 105 games... and started 2. But that year he got 28 pinch hits, a major league record. Oh I'm sure he would love to have started more games. But do you think he would have set a major league record of ANY kind if he did? Didn't think so. RESERVE CATCHER YORVIT TORREALBA Torreabla is a decent catcher who is average defensively... but his gigantic 3 run homer off of ...

... and walking into Omar Minaya’s office to plead for a five-minute tryout. If I’m Ramon Castro, I may hold the pen for a few more days and then demand a similar deal. I don’t see a significant difference between Castro and Torrealba, other than the fact that Castro projects to be a better offensive player. Take a look at each player’s career numbers on Baseball Reference and you be the judge:

Offseason Ideas #4

... , but I find it difficult to believe he would come cheap enough to be the kind of player I'm thinking of or that he would be completely open to the idea of being a backup to Dioner Navarro. Sure, if he says he'll sign for a $1 to $2 million per year, 2-year contract, I'd be more than happy to bring him on board. With teams that need starting catchers - like the Mets, for instance - out there, it seems unlikely that our offer could be better than theirs. Yorvit Torrealba is another catcher who is out there, but with his success for the Colorado Rockies down the stretch, it is ...

... of the mighty dollar to convince players to come down to this hell hole that is South Florida Baseball. Larry Beinfest has an unhealthy obsession with overpaying mediocre catchers.
Stat Pack: Torrealba, 29, played in a career-high 113 games for the National League champion Rockies and set personal bests for homers (eight) and RBI (47) while hitting .255 with a pedestrian .655 on-base plus slugging percentage.

... Yorvit Torrealba (396 AB, .255, 8 HR, 47 RBI, .323 OBP) gives the team some gap power and run production at the bottom of the order. From what I've seen of Torrealba behind the plate, he handles himself well and should have a long career (barring injury) as a platoon or solid backup catcher. Chris Ianetta (.218, 4 HR, 27 RBI, .330 OBP in a disappointing rookie season) may also see some action. ...

... There is perhaps no pitcher in the majors who gets as worked up over the strike zone as Mike Mussina. If he throws a pitch near a corner and it’s called a ball, he seriously turns into the Hulk. What usually follows is not pretty. Thank God we weren’t subject to that last night, what we term the Mussina Meltdown. Then again, allowing a home run to a fringe major leager is meltdown-esque. ...

Should He Stay or Should He Go?

... at the catcher position, only one player in Yorvit Torrealba will be under 30. You’ve got some potential big names (Lo Duca, Pudge, Kendall) but none that I’d be willing to take a shot at considering their ages and likely contract demands. The Cubs minor league system doesn’t have any reasonable options at the moment. Jake Fox is the only real hope but he seems destined for a position change and certainly won’t be handed the starting job at the beginning of next year. I refuse to accept Henry Blanco as a viable starter. Great gloveman, complete blackhole on offense for large periods of time (do we all remember the .158 first half in 2005 or how about the 3/43 in April/May last year?). There’s always the trade route, which is of course how Hendry snagged Barrett in the first place, but who knows who will be available when, so the team can’t count on that one. ...
