This is great video, because it shows ESPN commentary from BOTH matches (USA v EGYPT and BRAZIL v ITALY) as the drama was unfolding simultaneously in South Africa.  This fan-edited video includes the closing moments of each match, ending with Bob Bradley's smiling face as he knows the seemingly impossible needed results from both matches had occurred.

Official announcement: GALAXY's Press Release on Beckham's loan deal and return to LA [UPDATED]

  • getin2thegame getin2thegame
    +4

    1. Beckham is still a potent player, and this is an important story, regardless of what you think of the man.  That AC Milan felt he was the one person to fill that space with all the superstar talent already on that team, says something about his continued alibility.  Plus, he has 108 caps for England, almost unmatched in history.

    2. MLS has plenty more talent.  It isn't the league's fault that these players are ignored by the mainstream media.  MSM and any other reporters interested would improve their own reputations if they expanded their focus of MLS.   A Galaxy teammate of Beckham's, Landon Donovan, is a good place to start.   He had the most goals of anyone in MLS last year, and there was barely a word about the feat or the man in MSM...

    ( sad )

The worst part is that the FOX channels that are doing so well with Soccer - the growth in the U.S. of FSC, FSE, FSN, FOX Sports internationally have them trying so hard because they want to be more competitive for bids against ESPN for rights for future World Cups !

42,000 Fans at a Soccer Game in Montréal !?

  • getin2thegame getin2thegame

Soccer's already big in the U.S., and is growing every year...

Good to see the enthusiasm in Canada !

    (more examples...)

Toronto FC has the second-highest attendance in all of MLS, despite playing only two seasons so far, and not yet making the playoffs.

Steve Nash is an investor in Vancouver's MLS and stadium development groups; his brother Martin plays on the 2008 champion Whitecaps there (big attendances also).

Canada built new soccer stadiums, which opened in 2007, and have been renovating Montreal's to hold more people.

USA bids for 2018 or 2022 FIFA World Cup [UPDATED]

  • getin2thegame getin2thegame
    +4

MLS is expected to do better than the others and perhaps thrive during this recessionary time.  It's not the league saying that - it's Wall Street Journal, Sports Business Journal, Forbes, and many others.

MLS was already the only big league adding teams.  This year, they will add their 5th in past five years, and three more are coming in the next two.  Nothing will stop that expansion (not even recession), and more cities are lining up.

MLS regular-season match attendances are similar to NBA and NHL already.  Marquee soccer matches, including 'meaningless' club freindlies, have been filling up huge NFL stadiums and even breaking attendance records with no problem.

Many more points could be made, and many articles are on BallHype where you can read them now.

The investment is more sound this time, with Steve Nash, Jeffrey Mallett, and others in for the long term.

Some of the executives, team names, and players are continuing from WUSA;  they say the best of the WUSA are merging with the new talent, both on and off the ptich.

Like the MLS, WPS has already signed up new expansion teams for future seasons.  Many believe soccer will be strong in this economy as a spectator sport, due to the relatively inexpensive tickets and grass roots popularity.

By their calculations, all of the teams worth over $ 1 Billion are European soccer clubs, NFL teams, plus the NY Yankees.  They said in their article that the highest valued NBA team fell far short of the $ 1 Billion mark, that would be the NY Knicks ($ 600 Million+)

"Neck and neck with the electoral college"

Yep, that just about sums it up !

(think about how many hoped the electoral college would be abolished after the 2000 election; never happened, and even the talk about it died down within a short time)

    Thanks for the post !

I have a feeling our new President will be done with this topic, though... (well, at least 'til next year !)
