I'm originally from Australia, but live in the UK and love the NBA... but not just the NBA, all basketball. It's from this unique perspective that I try to follow everything from the Australian NBL, to Euro leagues to NBA.

I used to run a blog called RGB : Rose Garden Blog, but have moved onto A Stern Warning to have a more well-rounded view on basketball, without showing so much of my Blazers bias!

Web Site: ...a stern warning

Really well done Ric. A lot of work must have gone into this.

I believe that Jack Johnson's father, Jeff, was a famous Hawai'ian surfer too (now deceased).

    Happy 50th!

NFL Debate: Should the Super Bowl be held in London?

  • mookie mookie

I see what you mean. I think it would be a real dis-service to the game for them to take the game to London more than once every five years (or even more than that) -- in other words, it should only be put in the rotation like any other city to host the SuperBowl.

On the topic of taking it to other places, I don't know that there are that many places that it would work in... I remember going to a game in Sydney, Australia many years back and it wasn't a rousing success. There are plenty of NFL fans in Oz, and the stadium sold out, but the majority of fans there were turning up for the novelty value and were not pure fans of gridiron. So finding other cities/countries that have enough fan base would be hard (other places that I know are hotbeds of NFL fans are Scotland and Germany).

Hahaha well, I had no idea that you were a UNC fan, AEM *wink* -- I don't think you've made that clear enough ;)

NFL Debate: Should the Super Bowl be held in London?

I see your point AEM, but remember two things:

    1. There are many very loyal fans on the other side of the world who have put in the very hard yards to follow their team remotely all season long (for many years) and they are rewarded with an eventual opportunity to get a taste of their team live in their own backyard.

    2. Fans have to travel to get to wherever the Superbowl is anyway, so why not make the trip to London... incidentally it's not that big a trip from say New York (about 6 hours and about $500-600) -- it gives them an opportunity to make a European holiday they might not have otherwise done...

NFL Debate: Should the Super Bowl be held in London?

The NFL is hugely popular in the United Kingdom. Whenever games come to London (once a year), they sell out immediately. Not only that, but there is a ballot for tickets which was six times oversubscribed last year (if I recall correctly).

The SuperBowl in London would be HUGE! And a great marketing device for the NFL.

Nice, exhaustive review!! There's nothing more disappointing than a new series release that fails to improve on the previous year... as a formerly very loyal NBA Live fan that was cheated on like an unsuspecting husband too many times, I know what that is like.
