ESPN + College Football Live = Garbage

Over the years I have become less and less of an ESPN fan. They have shelled out numerous stories with many factual inaccuracies and biases, and it's disappointing and contradictory that they claim to be the worldwide leader in sports. Their latest transgression occurred recently on the show College Football Live. They showed various teams and their upcoming schedules for the season on the ticker on the left-hand side of the screen. At the bottom of the visual, they included pieces of information about the team and/or coach and then list key returners and key losses. For Notre Dame, they listed Tom Zbikowski and Maurice Crum as key losses. Apparently Charlie Weis and Co. were so upset over the loss of Crum that they decided to insert him at the starting inside linebacker position. Or maybe, just maybe, ESPN is incapable of typing Maurice Crum into Google. Maurice was a senior last year, so maybe that confused them. However, he applied for and was granted a fifth year with the Fighting Irish. ...

Mangini mum on Favre report

Jets coach Eric Mangini refused to confirm or deny an ESPN report that says the Jets have received permission to speak with retired Packers quarterback Brett Favre. Mangini, speaking at his midday news conference, dodged several questions regarding Favre. Giving his stock answer for questions about potential acquisitions, he called it an “internal matter.” The Daily News has reported recently that the Jets have no interest in Favre. On Thursday, the first day of training camp, Mangini all but confirmed the lack of interest. Though he didn’t answer directly about Favre, he said he was “really happy with the quarterbacks we have on the roster” and wasn’t interested in adding another veteran. Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens are battling for the starting job. On the first day of camp, neither player performed well, especially Clemens, who threw two interceptions. Have the Jets done a 180 with regard to Brett Favre? ESPN is reporting the Jets have received permission from the Packers to speak with Favre. Yesterday, Eric Mangini said the club is “very happy” with its quarterback situation. That was before Kellen Clemens and Chad Pennington stunk it up on the practice field for the second time on Day 1 of camp.

Detroit Shock Sign Nancy Lieberman

Detroit Shock Head Coach and General Manager Bill Laimbeer announced today that the team has signed basketball Hall of Famer, former Detroit Shock head coach and current ESPN broadcaster Nancy Lieberman to a seven-day contract. "At last year's WNBA All-Star Game, our coaching staff watched Nancy run through the skills test. She was very impressive,"said Laimbeer. "We talked after that if the opportunity ever arose to sign her to a seven-day contract we might give her a call. There is no question she is in great shape. I approached her two weeks ago, but the timing was not right."

ESPN.COM News Services reports "Basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman is leaving the broadcast booth for the floor one more time -- and to set one more record. The Detroit Shock have signed Lieberman, the team's former coach and a current ESPN basketball analyst, to a seven-day contract, meaning she will become the oldest player to ever suit up for a WNBA game. She turned 50 on July 1. 'It is an amazing opportunity to continue to play the game I love,' Lieberman said.

It must be the middle of summer. You want to know how I know? It's simple. Fox News...oops, I mean ESPN has the spin machine working. ESPN has the daunting challenge of filling a full hour for Sports Center with only one true sport in season. After they give you all the baseball highlights, they still have about twenty minutes to fill. So what do they do? One word: Filler. It's like your favorite recording artist who doesn't have enough good songs to fill an entire album so they throw in a couple of songs that even they know are no good. That is what ESPN is doing with the "Brett Favre Saga." So after the completely pointless " Title-town" feature they are running, they feel the need to throw Bret Favre under the Green Bay Packers Team Bus. I feel that if Brett Favre would have claimed to feel his "itch" during the NBA playoffs this wouldn't be the debacle it has turned out to be. Other than what seems to be a twice-weekly occurrence of players being booted off teams, all's quiet for now. Well, except for Urban Meyer. Most of you have probably heard about this... Simply calling Tim Tebow the best quarterback in college football apparently isn't enough. Gators coach Urban Meyer told a Miami audience that Tebow ''is the greatest player of our era.'' Tebow certainly has the potential to be the greatest player of this era, but I think it's premature to bestow that honor on him just yet. The MNC ring as a freshman and the Heisman as a sophomore put him in a class by himself, but he's got at least one more year in college, and SEC coaching staffs have had another full offseason to work on defensive schemes to slow him down. There are plenty of defenders across the SEC who will take a little extra joy popping the defending Heisman winner. * ESPN loves to make up new statistics and shove them down our throats—OPS anyone? I just read the article "What Do You Hate in Sports? The Bill Belichick List". I loved that article, but I would like to create my own list of the stuff that I hate in the sports world. I do love sports, but there are things that I hate about it. ESPN and ESPN 2 will televise the USA Basketball Men's Senior National Team's five-game exhibition schedule beginning Friday, July 25.The USA men will tip off its schedule when it faces Canada in the 2008 State Farm USA Basketball Challenge at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 25 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. ESPN2 will then televise live from China all four U.S. games in the USA Basketball International Challenge starting Thursday, July 31. The first two games will take place at CotaiArena in Macao and the last two games will be held in Shanghai at Qizhong Arena. All of the games from China will re-air on ESPN2.

Yankee Stadium's regular-season finale will be a night game. The Yankees' Sept. 21 game against the Baltimore Orioles has been scheduled for 8:05 p.m. and will be televised nationally by ESPN or ESPN2 as part of their Sunday night package. The game was listed as TBA on the original schedule and was selected by ESPN just before the All-Star break, MLB senior vice president Katy Feeney said Wednesday.
