Verducci: Philadelphia Phillies "very Aggressive" in Pursuit of Roy Halladay

Tom Verducci, a baseball insider for Sports Illustrated and the MLB Network, reports that a source has told him that the Philadelphia Phillies have been "very aggressive" in their pursuit of Roy Halladay, and are the front-runners to acquire the right-hander.
The Phillies are looking for the players that Toronto wants for Halladay, and are putting together a package, even if it means they have to add another team into the mix, according to Verducci's source.
This coming one day after FOXSports.com reported that the Phils are offering a package that includes J.A. Happ and either Dom Brown or Reggie Taylor.

Fletcher named to all-decade team

Peter King of Sports Illustrated has named his all-decade NFL team and his linebackers are Ray Lewis, Derrick Brooks and ... London Fletcher. Of Fletcher, King writes: I've got an athlete, Ray Lewis, playing sideline to sideline, and now I'll take a tackling machine to clean up the run game. I gave Fletcher a nickname, the black Seau, he loved back in the Rams' glory days, and he produced like Junior, averaging 140 tackles a year and missing zero games because of injury in the decade. Fletcher edges Zack Thomas, James Farrior and Brian Urlacher not only because of his production but also for his durability and leadership.

Trying To Scale Mount Cody with Mr. Two-Bits

Defending charges that the Gators have rooked their way to this year's SEC Championship game, that Urban Meyer is a fraud, and that it's Alabama's year have me all jumbled up this morning.
One of my teaching colleagues has unearthed her "Roll Tide" hoodie and is gallivanting through the halls of our school donning proudly her Crimson regalia.
While yet another, our athletic director, has just placed upon my desk a ripped-out page from the latest edition of Sports Illustrated . It's apparently (I haven't read nor seen the piece), an article about Urban Meyer. In it, there's a pictorial "time-line" of Meyer's transformation from assistant coach at Ohio State up to his current position as head coach at Florida. Do I have to contend with the "Sports Illustrated Curse," too?
Lastly, I'm getting emails from friends in Florida admonishing me not to fret as they make their collective journeys to Atlanta.
And I'm feeling like I'm on an island up her in Jersey trying to defend the honor of one of my ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: NCAA Football, Florida Gators, Urban Meyer, Sports Illustrated, Alabama Crimson Tide, Ohio State Buckeyes

SI tabs Jeter as Sportsman of the Year

Back in July, several players told me at the All-Star Game that Derek Jeter was the most widely respected player in baseball. Apparently, Sports Illustrated agrees.

The magazine bestowed its Sportsman of the Year award on the Yankees captain today, making him the first member of the organization ever to receive the honor from SI.

Jeter had a memorable season, batting .334 with a .406 on-base percentage and 212 hits, finishing third in the American League’s MVP voting. He captivated the city in early September with his chase of Lou Gehrig’s franchise hits record, one he claimed as his own on Sept. 11 against the Orioles.

Jeter’s banner year was capped earlier this month when he helped lead the Yankees to their 27th World Series title, the fifth for the shortstop since he broke into the majors in 1996. Jeter hit .407 in the World Series, part of a postseason in which he batted .344.

Jeter, who played in his 10th All-Star Game this summer, won the American League’s ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Derek Jeter, All-Star Game, Sports Illustrated

Derek Jeter Named Sports Illustrated's "Sportsman of the Year"

While Derek Jeter may have missed out on winning the American League MVP Award to Joe Mauer, this is one award no one can take away from him. It was announced today that Jeter will be named Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year.
This is the first time that a Yankee has won the award in the 56 years of its existence, and the first time a baseball player has won since 2004, when the entire Boston Red Sox team was honored. Jeter had one of the best years of his career in 2009, as he was ranked in the Top 10 of several major American League categories. This led to the claiming of his fourth AL Silver Slugger Award and fourth AL Gold Glove. But, as Sports Illustrated points out, the award does not simply recognize great accomplishments on the field, but off the field as well. Jeter has been seen working with many charities, particularly with his Turn-2 Foundation , which he founded in 1996. The organization concentrates on encouraging children to avoid abusive drugs and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Derek Jeter, Sports Illustrated, Boston Red Sox
