The Home Run Derby has fallen on hard
times in recent years, as a lack of star
power has killed much of the appeal. This was evidenced again today with the announcement that Alex Rios was being added to this year's field. Here is a look at the decline of the Derby and suggestions on how to fix it.
The Scott Rolen for Troy Glaus trade is
pretty close in terms of value. In order to
be able to provide any real further insight into which teams wins here, I would have to be a doctor or have the ability to see in the future. I can't do that. But I can tell you what these guys were up to last season using pitch f/x data.
Alex Rios made his first All-Star game in
2007. And if the Jays had their way? He'd
be on a plane to San Francisco, says Ken Rosenthal.
Just over a year ago, the Blue Jays
signed center fielder Vernon Wells through 2014. Now, they
are on the verge of locking up right fielder Alex Rios for at least that long and possibly longer.
Over the last three days, I've been attending
the Blue Jays series against Oakland as working media
on behalf of Baseball Digest Daily. In order to avoid this becoming an all-Jays-all-the-time website as I post my overexcited babblings in tri-hourly blog posts, I've held off until the series was done to give my impressions. So hold on, here we go...
A video collection of MLB players breaking their
bats after they strike out. Because you've got to
break bats that are defective.
Review of the American League fantasy market as
of March 31. Well, its finally here. The real
opening day of baseball is upon us. To baseball fans, this is a national holiday. Call in sick from work and enjoy the dawn of a new season of hope for your hometown heroes. Or fantasy heroes as it may for some of us. Let’s take a final look back at the spring and that dream we had during ...
It's time for a little "tough love" for
the Jays' young star
Andruw Jones went 0-5 on Sunday vs the
Red Sox - but had an even more dubious
distinction in the game ... A Platinum Sombrero. Because a Gold one wasn't bad enough.
Vladimir Guerrero took out Alex Rios in the
finals of the 2007 Home Run Derby, but who
the heck is that guy in the 80's airbrush Jordan Haircuts t-shirt?
I hate Roger Clemens (unless he pitches for
my team). But suspending Clemens without suspending any Blue
Jays is the absolute wrong message you want to send.
[Looks at self in mirror] I can do
this. [Lifts up sleeve to reveal bicep. Flexes.] I
can do this!!! I know I'm not your typical home run hitter ....
I've awoken from my Home Run Derby hangover
and realized that it was geographically impossible for someone
to hit a ball to Sausalito from AT&T Park even if they were on T-Rex Growth Hormones.
The Blue Jays want Matt Cain for Alex
Rios, according to a high-ranking Toronto official, but the
Giants seem more willing to part with Tim Lincecum.
Await word from San Francisco about dealing Rios
for hurler NASHVILLE -- The ball is in the
San Francisco Giants' court. Or should we say the ball is waiting to be plunked into McCovey Cove as Blue Jays right fielder Alex Rios attempted to do during ...
A buy and sell you might not expect…
THREE UP/THREE DOWN Hitters Miguel Cabrera, 1B/3B—DET (UP) Cabrera
posted consistently good numbers over the first three months of the season, but had yet to really put together a run of great numbers. He is currently on a nine-game hitting streak, and during the month of July is hitting .341 with six home runs and 26 RBI. Look for Cabrera to ...
Carlsberg, Sticky Fingers and Zaunbies.
As Alex Rios' fly ball settled in Bobby
Abreu's glove to end the eighth inning last night,
there were no fist pumps, no twirls, no screams. Yankees star Joba Chamberlain simply took his glove off and walked off the field with his head down. Don't...
Screaming Sports' Drew Thibodeau breaks out another edition
of MLB Trade 'Em and suggests some very surprising
moves. Trade Alex Rios? Eric Bedard? You betcha. And while it may sounds crazy, he follows it up with some very sound reasoning.
