Alex Rodriguez, the great player whose resume was pockmarked by his recent postseason failure, played a huge role in the Yankees' 27th world championship and celebrated Wednesday with what seemed like part joy, part relief.

A-Rod's postseason has ring of redemption to it

NEW YORK — As soon as the last out was made, Alex Rodriguez ran to his teammates at the mound. The first embrace was with Mark Teixeira, then A-Rod joined the circle of Yankees. Jumping up and down, hugs all around for the World Series champions.
It's been a long time coming for A-Rod, but now he can call himself a champion.
Rodriguez broke from the group briefly and doubled over, head down, knees to the ground. He wanted a second to reflect on a season that started as badly as a season can—with an admission he used steroids and hip surgery that could have ended the season before he played a game.

"A lot of people were running the other way," Rodriguez said. "My teammates and coaches and organization stood right next to me and now we stand together as world champs. I couldn't be happier."

Rodriguez disappeared into the clubhouse for a few minutes, then joined his teammates on the podium for the trophy presentation, gathered with Dominican ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Alex Rodriguez, New York Yankees

Yankees Beat Phillies 7-3 Behind Matsui, Pettitte: Win 2009 World Series

The energy was in the Bronx on Wednesday night. There was a special feeling in the new Yankee Stadium that could be felt by the thousands who were there.
Game Six of the 2009 World Series between the Yankees and Phillies took place in the big ballpark in the Bronx, and there was no shortage of excitement for the fans.
The Yankees were sending up their most reliable pitcher in the postseason in Andy Pettitte, while the Phillies were countering with Pedro Martinez, a former nemesis of the Yankees.
While Martinez was on full rest from pitching in Game Two, Pettitte was pitching on three day's rest after winning Game Three on Saturday.
Pettitte started off the game with quality pitching, and even got Chase Utley to bounce into a double play to end the top of the first inning to get the crowd into the game early.
Martinez kept the Yankees off the board with a perfect first, and Pettitte came back for a strong second inning.
In the bottom of the second inning, the Yankees struck off Pedro. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Andy Pettitte, Hideki Matsui, Philadelphia Phillies, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez

Yankees Win! Baseball Loses

In a decade in which greed and excess have been dominant themes in all walks of life, it may be only fitting that the final major sports championship would be claimed by the franchise that best personifies those qualities, the New York Yankees. No team in all of sports has been as blatant or as successful in turning money into championships. In all, the Yankees have won 27 World Series Championships since claiming their first title in 1923. And, the Yankees have been leveraging their economic advantages since the very beginning of that run. When New York acquired Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox in 1920, they began the practice of buying the best talent. It is a strategy that they have continued for 90 years. While it may seem like I am bashing the Yankees, the reality is that the team is simply working within the rules of the game to give themselves the best opportunity to win. Because of the financial resources available to the Yankees and the non-existence of league controls, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Babe Ruth, Mark Teixeira, Alex Rodriguez

The New York Yankees: Old Heroes and New Redemption

When New York Yankees fans wake up tomorrow morning, they will feel something very strange. Something they have not felt in almost a decade.
It is not the heartbreak of Game 7 of the 2001 World Series. It is not Game 6 of the 2003 World Series. And it will certainly not feel like the 2004 ALCS. No, this is something Yankees fans, after taking it all in, will remember feeling back in the late 90's.
Yes, start spreading the news, the New York Yankees are champions of baseball for the 27th time in franchise history.
The Yankees finished the season on top, as they and their fans expected all along. One hundred-and-three wins capped off the best regular season for any club in the MLB, and after defeating the Minnesota Twins in three games, the Anaheim Angels in six, and now, the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies, also in six, the Bronx can start to celebrate down the Canyon of Heroes.
It's only fitting that the Yankees travel down that road. It was a season full of heroes rescuing a team ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Alex Rodriguez, Joe Girardi, Derek Jeter

Girardi dissected as Yanks try for title (AP)

When Joe Girardi left the dugout every few minutes to switch relievers against the Angels, some wondered whether he was getting paid per pitching change. When he left slumping Nick Swisher in the lineup, he was criticized. When he put in a pinch runner for Alex Rodriguez, his judgment was questioned. Now, his decision to go with a three-man rotation in the World Series is hotly debated.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Joe Girardi, Los Angeles Angels, Nick Swisher, Alex Rodriguez, New York Yankees

A high-priced slugger is having a hard time in the postseason with the New York Yankees. No, not that one. This time, it's Mark Teixeira who looks out of sorts at the plate. While Alex Rodriguez is piling up RBIs in the cleanup spot behind him, Teixeira is searching for answers in his first postseason after signing a $180 million, eight-year contract with New York in January.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Mark Teixeira, New York Yankees, Alex Rodriguez

The Alex Anthopoulos Game Plan: What Will Blue Jays Do with Roy Halladay?

Alex Anthopoulos has a plan for the Toronto Blue Jays. The problem is that he can't reveal the full details just quite yet. He's been in the midst of attempting to rebuild this team, solidifying the coaching staff last week. Now the next thing on Anthopoulos' agenda is the players. Last week on Primetime Sports , Paul Beeston assured us that fans would have a better idea of what kind of expectations to have when it comes to total payroll by the end of this week. It looks like he and AA just might deliver in time before next week's general managers meetings. Anthopoulos dropped a few sound bites about particular free agents and whether or not they would return next year. John McDonald, Rod Barajas, and Marco Scutaro were names that he mentioned and could not say whether or not they would be back next year. My suspicion is that at least two out of those three players will leave via free agency, with Johnny Mac almost certainly out the door. It simply doesn't make sense to pay McDonald ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Toronto Blue Jays, Roy Halladay, Alex Rodriguez

Mark Teixeira is floundering at the plate in his first postseason the way A-Rod once did. And while the Yanks have survived so far, you have to ask: Can they really win a championship with their No. 3 hitter seemingly blinded by the bright lights of October/November?

Phillies fight back, force Game 6 in New York

PHILADELPHIA — Yankee Stadium will play host to a World Series clincher in its inaugural season. Whether the home team does the celebrating remains to be determined. After the Phillies' 8-6 win Monday night in Game 5, the Yankees remain one victory away from championship No. 27. The Phillies need two wins to repeat.
Why the Phillies have hope
Red-hot Chase Utley slugged his way to World Series immortality with two homers Monday, equaling Reggie Jackson's record of five. Utley erased the Yankees' 1-0 lead by blasting a three-run homer before A.J. Burnett retired a batter, then added a solo shot in the seventh.

Cliff Lee wasn't as sharp as in Game 1 but was good enough, allowing five runs in seven-plus innings.
World Series Game 5: Yankees-Phillies live blog

8:09: The Yankees don't score again in the inning, but they had two hits and drew a walk, doing more damage in the first than they did most of the night in Game 1. Lee threw 20 pitches.

8:05: Another huge hit for A-Rod, who doubles in Damon to give the Yankees a 1-0 lead. That's Rodriguez's 16th RBI of the postseason, a new Yankees record.

8:01: Louder boos for Johnny Damon tonight than in the first two games here. That's what happens when you exploit a team's own stupidity to beat them in the biggest game of the year.

8:00: And we're underway. Game-time temperature is 50 degrees as Derek Jeter takes ball one from Cliff Lee before grounding out to shortstop.

7:55: Greetings from Citizens Bank Park. We're a few minutes from first pitch, as the Yankees try to wrap up title No. 27 with a win over the Phillies, Alanis Morrisette just sang a very good rendition of the National Anthem, and the Phillies are about to take the field once Cliff Lee walks in from the bullpen.
