Let's be honest, Andy Pettitte is starting to look like just another Yankee who is a little too old, a little too past his prime to recapture the glory days.

A-Rod is A-Flop against Boston

I don’t even know where to begin in recounting tonight’s debacle. Scratch that - I do know where to begin. With Alex Rodriguez going 0-for-5 and getting booed repeatedly, and loudly, this evening. Heck, before that ninth inning at-bat, A-Rod got booed from the hometown fans about as badly as he does at Fenway!

What a frustrating night. You would think, with Andy Pettitte on the mound, Tim Wakefield pitching in John Beckett;s spot, Johnny Damon hitting two homers, and the now Manny Ramirez-free Sox lineup also missing Mike Lowell and J.D. Drew, that the Yanks could win this game. No such luck,

David Cone said that Pettitte allowed 13 of the 26 batters he faced to get on base. That’s not exactly a stat for the back of Pettitte’s bubble-gum card. So much for Jose Molina being Andy’s personal catcher - and what’s up with that, by the way? I understand him being Mike Mussina;s catcher, as we know how much the Moose likes his routine. But why doesn’t Pudge ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Alex Rodriguez, New York Yankees, Andy Pettitte

Plenty of pressure to go around as Sox invade Bronx

So it all comes down to this.

Okay, not really. The Yankees and Red Sox open a three-game series in the Bronx tonight with quite a bit on the line. The Yankees trail the Sox by five games in the AL wild card race, while Boston’s lead over the Twins is only one game.

As much pressure as there is on the Yankees - and don’t get me wrong, anything other than a series win will effectively end the Yankees’ season - the Red Sox have their share of pressure on them over the next three days, too.

Here are the pitching matchups:

 Tuesday, 7:05 p.m.: Tim Wakefield (7-8, 3.67) vs. Andy Pettitte (13-9, 4.17)

 Wednesday, 7:05 p.m.: Paul Byrd (8-11, 4.61) vs. Sidney Ponson (7-4, 4.67)

 Thursday, 1:05 p.m.: Jon Lester (12-5, 3.49) vs. Mike Mussina (16-7, 3.45)

I’ll give the Yankees two out of three in the series, which will slice the lead to four with 29 games to go. Should be an interesting week at the Stadium. Check back for updates throughout the series.

All good things must come to an end and unfortunately for the Toronto Blue Jays, there modest three game winning streak against division rivals (Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees) ended much to early.
Blue Jays rookie David Purcey (2-4) struggled mightily throughout the game and never got comfortable on the mound.
The Yankees were able to strike early against Purcey, scoring two quick runs in the first inning.
The inning started off with three consecutive singles off of the bats of Yankee hitters, loading the bases with zero outs. A sacrifice fly from Jason Giambi and a run-scoring single from Xavier Nady got the Yankees off to a very good start.
After getting out of the second and third innings unscathed, Purcey would make a mistake that would ultimately mean his departure from the game.
Purcey served up a big fat meatball to the light hitting Derek Jeter, who went on to deposit the ball over the fence for a three-run homer.
Purcey's night was done after the inning. He threw for only ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Toronto Blue Jays, David Purcey, New York Yankees, Al Reyes, Andy Pettitte

Yankees-Blue Jays: Andy Pettitte, Derek Jeter Help Yanks Even Series with Jays

They're all must-wins at this point, and there aren't many pitchers the New York Yankees could want on the mound after a tough loss other than Andy Pettitte.
The team's stopper pitched brilliantly on Wednesday night, albeit against a struggling Toronto Blue Jays lineup, giving up just one run and five hits over seven innings, en route to his 13th win of the year.
But Pettitte was just one out better than Darrell Rasner the night before, so the real difference in the second game of this series was the Bombers' offense.
The Yankees touched up David Purcey for five runs on seven hits over four innings, and while the Jays' starter entered the game with an ERA of 5.93, the minor offensive breakout was a step in the right direction for a team that has not done well all year against unfamiliar lefties.
Thursday, however, the task will be a lot more difficult, as the Yanks face future Hall of Famer Roy Halladay. But New York is going to have to win a lot of these tougher matchups, now ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Yankees, Andy Pettitte, Derek Jeter

Andy Pettitte was there at the dawn of the Yankees' dynasty and sometimes he can't help but look at this year's team through the prism of past championships. This year's version, though, has been hurt by injuries and lacked clutch hitting.
