Trade Analysis: Hermida a Monster pickup?

Perhaps as a hedge for the possible departure of Jason Bay as a free agent, the Red Sox traded for Jeremy Hermida on Thursday, sending lefthanded pitchers Hunter Jones and Jose Alvarez to the Marlins for an outfielder who once was a highly-touted prospect, but has struggled over the last two years.

Jeremy Hermida's opposite-field power should play well at Fenway Park, but he's no sure thing to get his career back on track in Boston.

Hermida, who turns 26 in January, has hit .253 with 30 homers and 108 RBI over the last two years, doing less in 931 at-bats than Bay (.267/36/119) did in Boston this year in 531 at-bats.

But Hermida should be able to put up better numbers at Fenway Park - as an all-fields hitter, Hermida was hurt by the deep left-center field in Miami much more than most. Only four of his 13 homers in 2009 came in home games, and with the Green Monster to shoot at, Hermida could be the next Boston lefthanded hitter to turn the wall into his best friend.

One of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Jeremy Hermida, Fenway Park, Boston Red Sox, Florida Marlins

Trade Analysis: Pirates pick up Iwamura

Akinori Iwamura will try to help the Pirates get back in the swing of things.

When the Pirates traded for Akinori Iwamura on Tuesday night, sending righthanded reliever Jesse Chavez to Tampa Bay, then exercised the second baseman’s 2010 option, Iwamura became the highest-paid Pirate at $4.85 million for 2010.

It’s an instant upgrade for Pittsburgh, as after Freddy Sanchez was dealt to the Giants this past summer, the quartet of Ramon Vazquez, Delwyn Young, Brian Bixler and Luis Cruz combined to hit .218 with four homers and 26 RBI in 285 at-bats, 222 of them by Young, who hit .311 with a .385 on-base percentage in 132 at-bats in a part-time role before the All-Star break, but struggled when pressed into everyday service. Young going back to the bench, with his ability to play the corner outfield spots as well as second base, also provides a much-needed boost for the Pirates.

Iwamura was batting .310 when he hurt his knee in a collision in Miami on May 24, and returned to hit ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Akinori Iwamura, Tampa Bay Rays, Pittsburgh Pirates

Trade Analysis: White Sox add Teahen

On Wednesday night, during Game 6 of the World Series, the Daily News’ Bill Madden broke the news of a rare trade between division rivals that became official yesterday, as the Royals sent third baseman Mark Teahen to the White Sox for second baseman Chris Getz and third baseman Josh Fields.

Mark Teahen slides into a better situation in Chicago, where he won't be expected to carry the lineup as he was at times for the Royals.

Teahen looked like he was ready for big things in 2006, when he hit .290 with 18 homers and 69 RBI with a .517 slugging percentage in 439 plate appearances, but has struggled since then, hitting seven, 15 and 12 homers while posting OPS+ figures in the 91-98 range each of the last three seasons.

Where you might have expected a breakout from Teahen after he burst on the scene, he’s instead simply leveled off, with a walk rate that’s slipped a bit each year. He hits lefthanders and righthanders about equally well, which is a good sign, but his plate ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Mark Teahen, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals

Chien-Ming Wang: The Arm That Isn't Available…Yet

Chien-Ming Wang is a member of the World Champion New York Yankees, for now.

The 29-year-old right-handed starter is eligible for arbitration this winter and the Yankees have until the December 12 deadline to offer him a contract for next season, something that doesn’t appear likely.

Wang, who is recovering from shoulder surgery, made $5 million last season after signing a one-year deal to avoid arbitration and is under team control for two more seasons.

It is largely rumored that the Yankees aren’t expected to offer him a contract, thus making him a free agent.

It is quite a different world for Wang than it was a year and a half ago when he was one of the best starters in baseball.

Heading into play on June 15, 2008, Wang had a career record of 54-20 with a 3.79 ERA. He’d finished second in the 2006 Cy Young voting and had won 19 games twice.

Unfortunately, that would be the end of Wang’s success.

During an inter-league game against the Houston Astros, Wang ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB

Milwaukee Brewers: The Likely Fallout from the Carlos Gomez Trade

Now that a day has passed, and Brewers' GM Doug Melvin has spoken about it, it's time to figure out what the acquisition of Carlos Gomez means for the Brewers this offseason.
Melvin commented at his press conference yesterday that he received no offers for pitching that he felt was worth trading Hardy for. Gomez fit a need for the Brewers, and he was comfortable enough with the offer to make the deal.
Many fans figured Boston was the destination for Hardy that made the most sense. In fact, Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe confirmed that the Red Sox were in on the discussions for Hardy.
Melvin tried to get Clay Buchholz or Daniel Bard, but Boston was only willing to part with Michael Bowden. Buchholz would have stepped right into the rotation behind Yovani Gallardo. Bard would have been a great arm in the bullpen, and he could have been a future closer after Trevor Hoffman left.
While Bowden may not be as well-known as Buchholz or Bard, he's still a very promising pitcher. He was ranked ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, Carlos Gomez

Minnesota Exercises Michael Cuddyer's 2011 Option

The Minnesota Twins announced today that the club has exercised Michael Cuddyer’s 2011 option valued at $10.5 million.

The option is part of the four-year deal Cuddyer signed in 2008. The right fielder will make $8.5 million in 2010, the third year of the $33.5 million pact.

"Obviously, I was excited," Cuddyer said. "This is where I want to be, I've made no secret about that. To know that I'm going to be here at least two more years is gratifying."

Cuddyer, 30, is coming off a career year in which he batted .276 with 32 home runs, 94 RBI, and 73-extra base hits.

The slugging outfielder was a major contributor to the surge that propelled the Twins past the rival Detroit Tigers to win the American League Central pennant.

Cuddyer moved from his customary right field to first base when Justin Morneau was forced from the lineup with a severe back injury in September.

In his new role as starting first baseman, Cuddyer produced hit .282 with eight homers and 24 RBIs, all ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB

New York City office workers who got carried away during the Yankees victory parade on Friday apparently began tossing files and documents out the window when they couldn't get their hands on confetti.

Auditor Damian Salo attended the Manhattan parade. He tells The New York Post he found all sorts of personal financial documents in the mountains of shredded paper tossed from skyscrapers as the players rode up Broadway.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees

Vicente Padilla 's pitching ability wasn't the issue when the Rangers released him in midseason. It's the off-the-field activity and his ability to alienate teammates that limits his value. The Dodgers had said they were interested in re-signing him but are asking hard questions about an incident in which he was shot in the right thigh last week in his native Nicaragua. The shooting did appear to be the result of an accident, possibly due to the mishandling of a gun by a bodyguard. ...

Gary Matthews, Jr.: Should He Stay or Should He Go?

Hardly a week had gone by since the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim were eliminated from the playoffs before they hit their first offseason obstacle.
His name is Gary Matthews Jr.
In what will likely be an emotional and turbulent offseason for the Angels, who saw no less than three star players and several more reserves filing for free agency already, the team's chief concern has become a bench player who is still under contract for two more years.
Perhaps, though, that is why Matthews chose to make his irritating move now.
The starting outfield for the Angels is already set, but the team did have three outfielders enter the free agent market this week in Vladimir Guerrero, Robb Quinlan, and Reggie Willits.
Guerrero may be offered a contract, but it likely won't amount to much and expectations are that he'll be flailing away for a new club next season.
Quinlan has been a fine reserve off the bench, but his defensive abilities are somewhat limited and the Angels have plenty of young talent ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB
