Cardinals won't turn to Bay if Holliday leaves

                    Sporting News staff reports

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that free-agent outfielder Jason Bay isn't a priority for the team and won't be even if free-agent outfielder Matt Holliday signs elsewhere.
Bay is considered a Plan B for any team that loses the Holliday sweepstakes, but the Cardinals apparently will shift their focus to starting pitching (perhaps a trade for Detroit Tigers right-hander Edwin Jackson or someone from the Atlanta Braves' rotation surplus) and lower-priced outfield options (such as free agent Xavier Nady) if they don't re-sign Holliday.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, St. Louis Cardinals, Matt Holliday, Jason Bay, Detroit Tigers, Edwin Jackson, Atlanta Braves

It's a Brave Market: Hudson Gets Three

If pitching wins championships, then the Atlanta Braves are taking all efforts to win in the next three seasons.
The team re-signed right-hander Tim Hudson to three-year contract, worth $28 million. The agreement also includes a club option for 2013, worth $9 million. But was this signing a risk worth taking for the Bravos?
Hudson will be turning 35 in July and has already started to show signs of slowing down over the last couple of seasons. Since coming to Atlanta in 2005, his numbers across the board have been in a steady decline. Last season, he made a total of seven starts due to surgery to repair a torn labrum in his throwing elbow, which he discovered shortly after the All-Star break in 2008.
The Braves did hold a $12 million option on the righty, and one could argue that they should have exercised that option, given Hudson a year to prove he his healthy and right the ship, and then sign him to an extension.
And, it's not like the team has a shortage of starting pitching. Javier ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Atlanta Braves, Tim Hudson

Impact rookies for next season

The Rising Stars game a couple weeks ago in the Arizona Fall League featured plenty of young talent, but it wasn't the prospect showcase that it could have been. Several of the truly elite players in the AFL this fall didn't play, including Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg (out with a mile neck strain), Braves outfielder Jason Heyward (gluteus muscle strain) and Marlins outfielder Mike Stanton (back pain) didn't play. In fact, Heyward and Stanton were sent home in October from the AFL, but it doesn't significantly affect their blue-chip status.

Hudson agrees to 3-year, $28M deal with Braves

Tim Hudson has agreed to a new three-year contract with the Atlanta Braves.

Hudson could have returned to the Braves under a $12 million mutual option, but the two sides focused on talks for a longer deal after the right-hander showed he had overcome major elbow surgery. They worked out a deal through 2012, with a club option for 2013.

Terms of the new contract are not yet available.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Atlanta Braves, Tim Hudson

Braves pursuing extension for Vazquez

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports the Braves are exploring a contract extension with right-hander Javier Vazquez.

Vazquez is entering the final season of his contract; he's owed $11.5 million. He was one of the Braves' top starters in 2009, posting a 2.87 ERA and striking out 238 in 219 1/3 innings. He also had a strikeout/walk ratio of almost 6:1.

Media have speculated that the Braves would need to create payroll space by trading Vazquez or right-hander Derek Lowe now that they've worked out an extension with right-hander Tim Hudson.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Atlanta Braves, Javier Vazquez, Derek Lowe, Tim Hudson

The Atlanta Braves' Tradeable Players Put Chips on Their Table

So, we've already gotten through the Adam LaRoche situation . Now, let's talk about the guys the Braves could be shipping out for some hole-filling. Here are the guys who shoul be on the block from the Braves' '09 payroll.

Derek Lowe Bad contract coming of a bad year, this one's pretty simple. But who would want him? Brewers? Cubs? Mets? You've gotta think "money-absorbing" over "talent-laden" in Lowe's situation when you're looking at potential suitors.

Yeah...that's pretty much it.
Coming off an 86-win season, you don't want to mess too much up.
Here are the potential "centerpieces" in deals for a middle-of-the-order hitter.

Javier Vazquez Spectacular career-year in '09, and, at this point, his value has never been higher. Why trade him then? Vazquez's '09 is too different from his career numbers to tell me that he'll sustain it for an extended period of time. It's either address the team's needs now, or wait until mid-July when Vazquez may have a 4.00 ERA (on ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Atlanta Braves, Derek Lowe

Will Craig Kimbrel Be the Next Braves Closer?

The Braves always appear to be a team that is looking for a player to close out tight games. This season they used both Rafael Soriano and Mike Gonzalez, unable to settle on which would be the best solution to their problems.
Could a long-term answer be sitting on their doorstep?
Selected in the third round of the 2008 draft (he was originally selected in the thirty-third round in 2007, but failed to sign), Craig Kimbrel made quick work of the minor leagues in 2009. He pitched across four levels, finishing the season without giving up a run over two innings at Triple-A.
He was impressive overall, but there is one big red flag hanging over him…his control. Overall, he walked 6.61 batters per nine innings in 2009, a number that makes it impossible to trust him in the latter innings.
While it’s a glaring issue, it may be the only one to consider at this point.
Baseball America recently described him by saying:
"Kimbrel has the stuff and mentality to be a big league closer. He aggressively ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Atlanta Braves
