Theo Epstein, Here's My Christmas List

I don't want a lot for Christmas, I've got pretty much everything I could want. I have a a nice cell phone, an iPod Touch, an Xbox 360 with Xbox Live, and there is a car waiting for me when I get my driver's license in the near future. Recently, I've been spoiled by my sports teams. But I'm not (too) spoiled. I understand the value of hard work. I get that money (technically) doesn't grow on trees. What else could I want?

I won't be asking for a whole lot for Christmas this year, but at my age, I'm a little old to be asking Santy Claus to bring the presents this December. What other jolly old fat guys can I turn to? The spirit of Chris Farley (may he rest in peace)? I don't think so. So, pleeeeeeeease, Mr. Epstein, I've been a good boy this year, and there isn't really a nonchalant way of doing this, but here's my Christmas list.
Yankees getting into the Halladay chase

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to a report on SI.com, the Yankees recently called the Blue Jays to inquire about ace Roy Halladay.
New Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos has hinted that he would deal his ace to a team within the division, thus giving the Yankees and Red Sox a more realistic chance to acquire the former A.L. Cy Young winner. There also have been indications that Anthopoulos might allow an interested team to negotiate a contract extension with Halladay before trading for him.
SI.com reports both the Yankees and Red Sox made a run at Halladay before the July 31 nonwaiver trading deadline. However, then-general manager J.P. Ricciardi wasn't willing to move Halladay to a division rival. Because any team trading for Halladay now will get only one season from him -- barring an extension -- Toronto's asking price likely has dropped.
Halladay was 17-10 with a 2.79 ERA with nine complete games and four ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Chase Utley

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Boston Herald reported the Red Sox likely will pursue a power-hitting corner infielder this offseason. As a result, third baseman Mike Lowell could hear his name in trade rumors for a second consecutive season.
In an e-mail to the newspaper, Lowell wrote, "I figure I am no stranger to trade rumors and I understand the team's desire to always look to upgrade."
Lowell, 35, is under contract with Boston for one more season (at $12 million). He hit .290 with 17 homers and 75 RBIs in 119 games this season.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Boston Red Sox, Mike Lowell

Boston Red Sox: Farewell George Kottaras, We Hardly Knew You

The Red Sox released Kottaras today. The 26-year-old catcher was out of options and couldn't be sent to the minors again.
Kottaras hit .237 last season in only 93 at-bats, an exceptionally small sample size.

Playing once a week as Tim Wakefield's personal catcher gave him no chance to develop a rhythm and prove himself.
Then Kottaras was placed on the disabled list on August 2, after suffering back spasms.
That happened to coincide with Wakefield going on the DL and the arrival of Victor Martinez. In truth, it was more than coincidence; the club needed to make room on the 25-man roster.
And that's what Kottaras was up against again this time; not enough room on the 40-man roster.
It's still unclear how Kottaras would fare over a full season at the Major League level, and what kind of hitter he might yet become. The scouting report on Kottaras notes that he has "20-home run power potential and good plate discipline," and that he is a "hard worker."
Kottaras will likely find a job ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Boston Red Sox, George Kottaras

MLB to award 2012 All-Star Game to Kansas City

                    Sporting News staff reports

Call it a doubleheader sweep for the Royals on Tuesday. First, ace Zack Greinke is named AL Cy Young Award winner. Hours later, it's reported that the 2012 All-Star Game will be played at Kauffman Stadium.

ComcastNet New England, citing a major league source, says that Kansas City has been awarded the game. An official announcement should come no later than next month at the winter meetings, the site reports.

The Royals were competing with the Boston Red Sox for the game. The Sox wanted to mark the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park with the Midsummer Classic. But as Comcast's Sean McAdam puts it, "MLB typically awards the game to cities and host teams with new ballparks or renovated facilities," and Kauffman underwent a major renovation that was completed in 2009.

Kansas City last hosted the All-Star Game in 1973, the year Kauffman Stadium (then known as Royals Stadium) opened.

Free-agent preview: Outfielders, designated hitters

Think of shopping for free-agent outfielders and DHs like this: Matt Holliday and Jason Bay are Nordstrom. Everyone else is Nordstrom Rack. "I think everyone sees there's separation after the first two," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said.

Holliday and Bay figure to sift through offers for weeks. Everyone else is less likely to be so choosy. No one wants to become this offseason's Bobby Abreu and have to take a last-minute, discount offer. (Even Abreu didn't want a repeat of last offseason. He already re-signed with the Angels.) The Red Sox, Yankees, Cardinals, Giants and Mets are among the big-money clubs with outfield/DH needs.
TOP 5 FREE-AGENT OUTFIELDERS/DHs

The Yankees got a lot out of Johnny Damon; do they risk another long-term deal?
1. LF Matt Holliday. Holliday's contract likely will be for at least five years and $90 million, and he is unlikely to be close to a deal until December's winter meetings.
Teams already lining up to negotiate with Lackey

                    Sporting News staff reports

Teams already are lining up to talk with the agent of Angels righthander John Lackey, according to MLB.com.
Lackey, 31, already has been identified as the top pitcher in this year's free-agent market and interest seems to be getting hotter leading up to Friday—the day the Angels lose exclusive negotiating rights and the dollar figures really start to grow.
According to MLB.com, the Red Sox, Mets and Brewers already have had preliminary discussions with agent Steve Hilliard, and the Yankees almost assuredly will join the discussion at some point. Sources in Seattle have identified the Mariners as an interested party as well.
The Mets and Red Sox are said to be compiling "due diligence" reports on Lackey's health after consecutive seasons in which he made only 24 and 27 starts. He was sidelined in both seasons by various arm injuries.
The Red Sox are expected to become a very ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, John Lackey, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets

The five teams that will shape MLB free agency

Jason Bay, John Lackey and Matt Holliday are the stars of this year's free-agent show.
On Friday, baseball's free-agent market officially will open. At that point, teams will be free to talk money with not only their own free agents but all free agents. This isn't a great free-agent class, but there are several impact players who will have the big-market franchises throwing plenty of money their way.

For once, all eyes won't be on the Yankees. Sure, they have decisions to make about Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui and Andy Pettitte, among others, but they won't spend nearly a half a billion dollars for the second consecutive offseason.

Instead, these teams will be the ones that will shape the market:

1. Mets. After a disastrous fourth-place finish that coincided with their crosstown rivals winning their 27th World Series, the Mets need an overhaul. Injuries played a big part in their 2009 struggles, but this team can't afford to go into the season with Daniel Murphy at first base, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox

Bigger Impact for the Boston Red Sox: Matt Holliday or Adrian Gonzalez?

With the trading rumors swirling away, a couple of big names are being thrown around that Boston Red Sox fans are very familiar with.
Left fielder Matt Holliday of the St. Louis Cardinals and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez of the San Diego Padres.

If Theo Epstein can't lock up Jason Bay to a long-term deal, the Sox need to find someone to replace the 2009 Silver Slugger award recipient.

Holliday, 29, struggled when he played in the American League with the Oakland Athletics.

In 93 games with the A's he hit .286 with 11 home runs, 54 RBI, 23 doubles, 1 triple, 12 stolen bases, 46 walks, and 58 strikeouts.

In 63 games with the Cardinals, Holliday batted .353 with 13 HR, 55 RBI, 16 doubles, 2 triples, 2 SB, 26 BB, and 43 strikeouts.

Though he totaled 27 HR and 109 RBI and a .313 BA, would Holliday again struggle if the Sox signed him to play in a tougher AL?

Gonzalez, 27, batted .277 in 160 games with 40 HR, 99 RBI, 27 doubles, 2 triples, 119 BB, and 101 strikeouts.

The Boston Red Sox are certainly in for an eventful offseason.

Already there's been the seemingly surprising move of acquiring Jeremy Hermida from the Florida Marlins.

But there are still many decisions to be made regarding players. In this article, I'll breakdown a few of the players rumored to be heading to, or from, the Red Sox.

If you think I've left any player off this list, leave me a comment. This article is in no particular order.

The Lowell Spinners, Class-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, are joining forces with FOX 25 personalities Kevin Lemanowicz and Ryan Asselta to spread cheer this holiday season as they search for a local elementary school to visit for a Holiday Party. Building off the popular "Spread the Love" Tour, which visits one local elementary school, selected based on essays submitted by students detailing why their school should be selected, to make cards and gifts for the residents of the Bedford Veteran's Hospital. This winter the caravan is looking for another local elementary school to join the good will program for a little holiday cheer.
"When we visit schools, you would think the excitement from the students would be unrivaled," said Spinners Vice President/General Manager Tim Bawmann. "However, when we visit residents at a nursing home or hospital, the joy on their faces when they see the cards produced by the children is an invigorating feeling."

Hey, didn't you used to be just begging for more NHL content ?
A Japanese sports Web site, Nikkan Sports, says the Red Sox might pursue Hideki Matsui. The Boston Globe spies, though, say that's highly unlikely . The BoSox would have to deal David Ortiz to even have a good place to put Godzilla.
Hey, Rangers fans (the Texas kind, not the New York kind), things might be looking up for you. Brian Cashman, GM of the World Series Champeen Yankees, says of Texas, "They're a team that has an opportunity to really make some noise as early as 2010."
And from your sports gossip pages: The new love of Jim Nantz's life , 29-year-old Courtney Richards says she "has champagne taste on a beer budget." Something tells Fly that IMG, where Ms. Richards is a vice president, doesn't pay all that bad, but good thing Nantz gets $7 million a year.

Yanks, Sox shopping for Halladay

The Blue Jays haven't decided whether or not to trade Roy Halladay this winter, but if they choose to move the former Cy Young winner, a bidding war could break out between the Yankees and Red Sox.

The Kid Is Back For Another

Word coming out of the continental northwest today is that Ken Griffey Jr. will return to play for the Seattle Mariners in 2010. It could be the final year of his Hall of Fame career. The one-year contract is estimated to be worth around $2 million, similar to the contract Griffey signed last year during the first season of his second go-round with the Mariners. The Home Run Kid may now be a shell of his old self, hitting just .214 with 19 round-trippers and 57 driven in last season. However, his playing for the team is just as important to getting people into Safeco Field, as it is to helping his team win. Griffey is now fifth place on the all-time home run list with 630 long balls for his career. To watch the man is to watch one of the games last true legends. I believe that despite his steady decline in production over the past few seasons, this was a good move for both Griffey and the Seattle Mariners. In other news: Catcher Jason Varitek has opted to stay with the Boston ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Seattle Mariners, Boston Red Sox, Ken Griffey, Hall of Fame

Agent: Wagner now open to returning to Red Sox

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Boston Herald reports that reliever Billy Wagner has had a change of heart and would be open to an arbitration offer from the Red Sox.
"I just visited with Billy and his family the other day, and I can tell you this much: Billy thoroughly enjoyed his time in Boston," agent Bean Stringfellow told the newspaper. "It was one of the best experiences he has ever had in baseball. So, does he rule out accepting arbitration? No, he doesn't."
Wagner, who waived his no-trade clause to come to Boston in a late August deal with the New York Mets, posted a 1.98 ERA in 15 games with the Red Sox. He has said he wanted to be a closer again, but Boston already has a premier closer in Jonathan Papelbon.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Billy Wagner, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, Jonathan Papelbon
