Phillies bolster bench by signing Ross Gload

Sporting News staff reports MLB.com reports the NL champion Phillies have agreed two a two-year contract with free-agent outfielder/first baseman Ross Gload. FOXSports.com reports the Phils beat out East Division rivals Florida and Atlanta for Gload. The left-handed-hitting reserve batted .261 with six homers and 30 RBIs in 230 at-bats for the Marlins last season. He is a lifetime .283 hitter. The move likely completes the Phillies' planned makeover of their bench. Gload, Brian Schneider and Juan Castro have been brought in to join holdovers Greg Dobbs and Ben Francisco.

If you know anything about the Mets, you know that they lost a game today when Brian Schneider signed a two-year deal with the Phillies to be Carlos Ruiz’s backup. Is there any doubt that at some point next season, Schneider will get a key hit in a big spot against the Mets? Schneider Schneider played just 59 games this season as he battled back, calf and knee injuries, batting .218 with a .292 on-base percentage and .335 slugging percentage. A career .235 hitter against lefthanders, Schneider didn’t have a hit against a southpaw in 2009, and shouldn’t expect to see too many in Philadelphia - Charlie Manuel can spot him in against tough righthanders to give Ruiz a break. While it’s hardly an earth-shattering move, Schneider does represent an upgrade - offensively and defensively - over Paul Bako, who hit .224 as the Phillies’ backup catcher this year and is running out of gas at 37.
