Mets still could bring back Delgado, Tatis

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to the New York Post, the Mets might still be interested in bringing back first baseman Carlos Delgado and third baseman Fernando Tatis, even though they didn't offer arbitration to either player.
Delgado, if he checks out as healthy when general manager Omar Minaya visits him in Puerto Rico later this month, could be a one-year bridge to top prospect Ike Davis. Tatis reportedly is a favorite of manager Jerry Manuel.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Mets, Carlos Delgado, Fernando Tatis, Omar Minaya, Ike Davis, Jerry Manuel

Mets steer clear of arbitration offers

The deadline for offering salary arbitration to the free agents who were with the Mets last season approached, and the club announced it would make no offers to its six remaining free agents -- Carlos Delgado, Fernando Tatis, Gary Sheffield, J.J. Putz, Elmer Dessens and Ramon Martinez.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Mets, Carlos Delgado, Fernando Tatis, Gary Sheffield, J.J.
Official: No arbitration offers for Mets

No great surprise on the arbitration front, where the Mets declined to offer it to any of their free agents.

Only Carlos Delgado or Fernando Tatis would have yielded a draft pick if he was offered arbitration and signed elsewhere. But it made no sense in either case to offer arbitration.

Delgado made $12 million last season, and would have been a no-brainer to accept the offer by the Dec. 12 deadline to reply since there's no way he can duplicate anything close to that salary as a free agent.

Because Tatis wants to return to the Mets, offering him arbitration would never have yielded a draft pick. Tatis merely would use the offer as a vehicle to be back next season with the Mets. Team officials want to see how the winter develops before deciding whether Tatis returns.

Expect quiet on Turkey Day

You may recall Mets brass visiting Pedro Martinez on Thanksgiving Day when recruiting him, or swinging a deal for Carlos Delgado during a Marlins sell-off another year at this time. Well, this year, despite a lot of renovating still on tap, the Mets are expected to be quiet this week, although they'll maintain dialogue with agents.

The date teams must offer arbitration to their free agents is next Tuesday, Dec., 1, in order to pick up a draft pick if the player signs elsewhere. So the Mets should wait until after then to sign Bengie Molina , their top free-agent catching target, if the sides can hammer out terms. That way, the Mets would know if they need to forfeit a draft pick to sign Molina. Still, it's hard to envision San Francisco offering arbitration ultimately would determine whether the Mets proceed with inking him. Molina is a "Type A" free agent, so the Mets would have to forfeit their second-round pick to sign him if the Giants offer arbitration.

On another subject, eventually ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, Pedro Martinez, Carlos Delgado
