Hardy hits winner to lift Brewers in 12 (AP)

J.J. Hardy singled in the winning run on his bobblehead day at Miller Park, and the Milwaukee Brewers beat Pittsburgh 4-3 in 12 innings on Sunday for their 12th straight home win over the Pirates. CC Sabathia got a no-decision instead of a win for a change, but the Brewers still kept pace in the playoff race with their 23rd win in their last at-bat and ninth series sweep this season.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, J.J.
Can CC Sabathia Win The NL Cy Young? If Not, Who Will It Be?

Carston Charles Sabathia made his first start as a Brewer on July 8. Sabathia surrendered two earned runs through six innings, earning his first victory as a Brewer.
Since then, Sabathia has won each of his eight decisions in the National League, going the distance in five of those games. With an E.R.A. of 1.59 and an average of just under nine strikeouts per nine innings, Sabathia has kept Milwaukee in the playoff picture.
He has only pitched in the National League for half of a season, and was just mediocre in the American League during the first half. Sabathia ended his tenure as an Indian with a 6-8 season record and a 3.78 E.R.A.
There is no doubt that Sabathia has been close to invincible on the mound since joining the Brewers, but is it really fair that some baseball analysts are throwing his name into the NL Cy Young race?
Brandon Webb, who leads the NL in wins and ranks second in innings pitched, won his first nine starts of the season.
Is CC Sabathia a prize Dodgers have their eye on?

Left-hander has California roots, and former Indians teammate Casey Blake thinks Dodgers would make sense for him. But as the top free-agent pitcher he'll command a huge contract.

Come To Think of It...How Trades Have Shaped the NL Pennant Race

This year's contending teams in the National League have acquired some players that have already made a huge impact on the pennant race and will likely continue to do so for the remainder of the season.
The most significant moves made by National League contenders were the following:

The Brewers obtain CC Sabathia.
The Cubs answer with Rich Harden.
The Diamondbacks get Adam Dunn.
The Dodgers acquire Manny Ramirez and Greg Maddux.

There were some lesser moves, of course, but these are the trades that are shaping the outcome of the divisional races.
Most of them are rentals, although the Cubs have an option year for 2009 on Rich Harden. The teams that unloaded these potential free agents wanted to get something for them before they walked away.
We can thank the Cleveland Indians, Oakland A's, Cincinnati Reds, Boston Red Sox, and the San Diego Padres for helping make this a more exciting stretch run.
The Maddux deal is just being finalized as I write this, and Los ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Rich Harden, C.C.
Cubs Handling Harden with Care, Brewers Treating CC Like a Rented Mule

One big difference between Milwaukee's acquisition of CC Sabathia versus the Cubs trade for Rich Harden is that Harden has an option for next year at a reasonable price. Sabathia is eligible to be a free agent once this season is over.
With the number of potential suitors expected to be high, and the dollar amounts outrageous, it is unlikely that the Brewers will be able to afford signing Sabathia long-term. And they know that.
The Cubs, on the other hand, fully expect to pick up the 2009 option on Harden's contract, assuming he stays healthy and perhaps even if he doesn't.
Recognizing that he will likely be a Cubs employee beyond this season, the Cubs are handling Harden with kid gloves. Knowing how fragile his health has been over the years, they are being careful with him.

Come To Think of It...CC Sabathia Is Treated Like a Rented Mule in Milwaukee

One big difference between Milwaukee's acquisition of CC Sabathia versus the Cubs' trade for Rich Harden is that Harden has an option for next year at a reasonable price. Sabathia is eligible to be a free agent once this season is over.
With the number of potential suitors expected to be high, and the dollar amounts outrageous, it is unlikely that the Brewers will be able to afford signing Sabathia for the long term. And they know that.
The Cubs, on the other hand, fully expect to pick up the 2009 option on Harden's contract, assuming he stays healthy, and perhaps even if he doesn't.
Recognizing that he will likely be a Cubs employee beyond this season, the Cubs are handling Harden with kid gloves. Knowing how fragile his health has been over the years, they are being careful with him.
CC, on the other hand, is being allowed to pitch until his arm falls off. Well, that's not entirely fair because the Brew Crew certainly don't want his arm to fall off before he takes them to the World Series. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, C.C.
CC Sabathia Si-Si-Sizzles Again

CC Sabathia has now won his last 11 starts overall, and is 8-0 since joining the Brewers, as he, and the rest of the Crew beat the Houston Astros 9-3 on Monday night.
He threw a career-high 130 pitches, allowing 11 hits, two earned runs and struck out nine, en-route to his fifth complete game for Milwaukee, and his eigth of the season.
Sabathia has not lost since June 5 with the Cleveland Indians, which means he was 3-8 at one point and almost written off by Indians fans.
Sabathia has been down-right ferocious since the trade, and has given Milwaukee the sense that playoff baseball will once again return to Brew City.
He started Monday, Aug. 18 with four scoreless innings against the Lee-and-Matsui-less Astros. On the flip-side, the Brewers' offense gave Sabathia a 6-0 lead after those four innings, and CC even helped himself out in that fourth.
Houston skipper Cecil Cooper decided to walk Brewers catcher Jason Kendall with two outs to load the bases for Sabathia. He calmly ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, C.C.
Barry Zito: Screwing Up The Pitching Market

We all know about "The Contract."
Seven years.
$126 million dollars.
Record: 6-15. ERA: 5.73.
In the word of the great Jon Miller, "The disaster that is Barry Zito in a Giants uniform continues."
The Giants bid against themselves, offering $126 million to a man who's HIGHEST OTHER OFFER WAS $100 million. They could have got him for $101 million, but gave him more for no reason.
Now, for the Giants mistakes, there is hell to pay, not only for the Giants, but for the rest of the major leagues.
Other pitchers will use Zito and his contract as a building block/stepping stone to gain leverage to get huge contracts.
When Tim Lincecum comes up for free agency, he will not, and should not, accept any less than $127 million from the Giants. He's better than Zito, and deserves more.
When CC Sabathia comes up for free agency, he's twice as good as Zito, so he should get $252 million dollars.
Using the Zito scale, contracts will start to get ridiculous. Teams ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Barry Zito, San Francisco Giants, Jon Miller, Tim Lincecum, C.C.
