Free agents' contract situations a difficult fit for Cubs' plans

There's no question Rich Harden and Reed Johnson would prefer to return to the Cubs in 2010, and in a perfect world, Jim Hendry would probably re-sign both.

Slow and Steady... But Is The Player Market Passing The Cubs By?

In the 40 hours or so since the conclusion of the World Series, four trades have sent nine Major Leaguers to new teams. Eight players filed for free agency, and two more were released by their 2009 organizations.
Milton Bradley, however, remains a Cub.
This is not yet a critical failing on the part of Cubs General Manager Jim Hendry. The key word, however, is "yet."
Cubs fans have seen this movie before. In the winter of 2003-04, Hendry dragged his feet and over-thought the necessary dumping of disgraced slugger and clubhouse pariah Sammy Sosa, hemming and hawing into early February before unloading Sosa on the Baltimore Orioles, getting far below market value even for the controversial and aging right fielder, and derailing the Cubs' off-season by putting a number of other needs on hold until it was too late fill them. The 2005 Cubs went 79-83.
Bradley, according to reports by everyone from FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal to the Chicago Tribune's Paul Sullivan, has generated much higher levels of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Jim Hendry, Milton Bradley

Should the Chicago Cubs Consider Brett Myers?

Reports out of Philadelphia Friday are that the National League Champion Phillies will not pursue an extension with Brett Myers.
Myers, once the top of the Philadelphia rotation, fell out of favor over the last couple years because of injuries and off-the-field issues. He spent some time as the Phillies closer before Brad Lidge was acquired as well.
Myers, 29, appeared in 18 games for the Phillies in 2009, starting 10 games and throwing 70.2 innings. He posted a 4-3 record with a 4.84 ERA and .272 batting average allowed. He struck out 50 batters, while 23 received a free pass.
The Chicago Cubs are looking for someone that won't command a huge salary to potentially give the team a few early season starts in Ted Lilly's absence, and some bullpen depth. Myers could potentially fill both of those roles.
The tricky part will be determining a market for Myers, and whether that market is as a starter or reliever. He made over $12 million last year, but stands to take a fairly substantial pay cut ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Brett Myers, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies

Come to Think of it: Top Ten Chicago Cubs of All-Time

We all know that picking a top ten list of players in any sport must contain some subjectivity. Sure, one could simply use statistics to support their choices, but how do you compare the relative worth of a pitcher versus a hitter, for example?

Players we remember from our childhoods often have special meaning for us, and it can be difficult to block out those emotions when rating players on your favorite team. We may have looked up to these players as heroes at the time.

Well, we are older now and smart enough to understand that you shouldn't use athletes as role models. Still, it's a fun trip down memory lane and hey, it always raises some debate.

What else do we have to do right now anyway, right? So, without further ado...

Former Rockies manager Clint Hurdle was hired as the new hitting coach for the Texas Rangers on Thursday.
The Yankee Model: What the Cubs Can Learn from the World Champs

In some ways, it's the same old story. The Yankees win, the Yankees win, say it 27 times for emphasis.
But for those of us who cast a critical eye on the Yankees' championship romp through a 105-win regular season and a dominant playoff run, there are lessons from which a hopeful contender in 2010 can learn a great deal.
The Cubs are just such a would-be winner, and since I make it my business to always look for new ways the Cubs could exploit potential advantages, it seems prudent to spend some time in meditation on what made the Yankees winners, and what the Cubs must do to match their results.
There's no better place to start, in this case, than at the close. The Yankees won this World Series, as they have the previous four since 1996, as much because of closer Mariano Rivera as for any other reason.
Rivera, 39, returned to his rightful place at the top of the relief pitching world in 2009. His 6.15 WXRL (Expected Wins Added Over Replacement; a metric that takes into account the situations ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees

What Does Ted Lilly's Surgery Mean to The 2010 Chicago Cubs?

A whisper leaked out of Arizona on Wednesday that Chicago Cubs' left-hander Ted Lilly underwent arthroscopic shoulder surgery on Tuesday and isn't expected to return until some point in April.
Great. [Collective sigh from Chicago's North Side.]
Here we go again.
So how does the knowledge that Lilly's now expected to likely miss the first month of the season impact the Cubs as they approach this important winter?
Let's examine a few scenarios.
The first issue that arises is, obviously, Lilly missing starts. You can now assume Lilly's only going to be good for around 25 starts in 2010, which eliminates a lot of imagination from the Cubs pitching staff. First off, any garbage about a four-man rotation shouldn't even be mentioned, because that does not exist in today's baseball. But the impact might force the Cubs to think about as many as six starters in April.
Lilly is the rock of the Cubs's staff, throwing 21 quality starts last year. Taking him out of the mix early, and the left handed ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Ted Lilly

Clint Hurdle expected to be Rangers' hitting coach

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports former Rockies manager Clint Hurdle will be the Rangers' new hitting coach.
Hurdle was one of four finalists for the job, along with Thad Bosley, Gerald Perry and Rusty Greer. The Rangers deny that any decision has been reached, but three sources told the newspaper that Hurdle is the team's choice. An official announcement is expected to come after the World Series.
Hurdle was the Rockies' hitting coach from 1997-2002, when he was promoted to manage the team. In seven-plus seasons as manager, Hurdle went 534-625 and led Colorado to the 2007 World Series. However, he was fired on May 29 after the Rockies opened this season with an 18-28 record.
Hurdle will replace Rudy Jaramillo in Texas. Jaramillo recently signed a three-year deal to become the Cubs' hitting coach.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Colorado Rockies, Texas Rangers, Clint Hurdle, Rudy Jaramillo, Chicago Cubs

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Texas Rangers' Web site reported that the team has not ruled out reacquiring outfielder Milton Bradley in a trade with the Chicago Cubs.

Texas scored 115 fewer runs in 2009 than it did in 2008, when Bradley was in the lineup. Bradley hit .321 with 22 homers, 77 RBIs and a .436 on-base percentage in his lone season with the Rangers.
This season he slumped to .257/.378/.397 with the Cubs. He managed just 12 homers and 40 RBIs in 124 games. He has two years remaining on the three-year, $30 million conrtact he signed as a free agent last offseason.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milton Bradley, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs

Chicago Cubs, John Grabow Talk Multi-Year Deal; Wait, You Want to Do What?

Filed: November 3rd, 2009

Bruce Levine of ESPN 1000 is reporting that the Cubs and reliever John Grabow are in the midst of heavy talks for a multi-year deal. Levine reports that the offer is reportedly to be a $6.5 to $7.5 million pact, with a third year being a possibility.
Some people never learn. I expected the Cubs to make a meaningful offer to retain John Grabow, especially given that he was effective down the stretch for the Cubs. If, at the end of the day, the Cubs can lock him up at under $6.5 million, preferably with the second year as an option, then this is a win-win in my book.
But I'm seeing the continuation of disturbing trends here that I hoped would cease with the ownership transition. Multi-year deals for relievers are reserved for lights-out firemen, closers, and guys with an established history of success. Not for lefties with average stats, pitching in low-stress innings for a perennial loser in Pittsburgh.
The formula is to have these guys on one-year deals, where ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, John Grabow

Atlanta Braves Baseball: Milton Bradley a Brave?

I know, I know. It's a crazy headline. Chicago Cubs fans everywhere are rejoicing! The fact is that the latest scourge on their beloved franchise is about to be no more. Problem is Bradley, prior to the '09 season, signed a nice fat $30 million contract to play for Chicago.
With two years, and $20 million left on the deal why would the Braves want the outspoken, classless journeyman on their team?
One name: Derek Lowe.
Cubs' disappointing, overpaid '09 free agent acquisition meet Atlanta's disappointing, overpaid '09 free agent acquisition.
How does it makes sense for the Braves? Thanks for asking.

Obviously the need for a bat is overwhelming at this point. Bradley is usually a consistent .300-hitter and averages between 10-20 home runs a year. He's a switch hitter and would provide great versatility in the Braves' lineup.
Bobby Cox and the veteran players in the clubhouse have long been acquainted with turning around troubled players. Remember Gary Sheffield?
Rebuilding on the Run: An Ideal 2010 Cubs Roster

The rumors are out there. The free agent lists are nearly complete; only uncertainty over player and club option years remains. The trade market is beginning to rediscover itself, for the first time in six weeks or so.

And now, armed with all of that knowledge, we have an opportunity to begin the task of concretely formulating the best plan of action for the Chicago Cubs over the course of the upcoming off-season. It will be an imprecise science; it will also likely not come to fruition, whatever we may propose, because Jim Hendry's mind does not work in the same way as the average fan's... or, certainly, the above-average fan's.

But it never hurts to try, and the Good Lord gave us hard, cold, rainy autumns in the great Windy City so that we could muse about next baseball season. Therefore, here I set forth my proposed Opening Day roster for the Chicago Cubs in 2010.

For each player, I will explicate their role somewhat, note their positions, uniform numbers, expected 2010 salaries, handedness and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Ryan Dempster, Carlos Zambrano, Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano

Come To Think of It: Milton Bradley Drawing Interest, but No Vernon Wells

It seems that Jim Hendry and the Cubs are intent on doing everything within their power to move Milton Bradley this winter. This reminds me of the offseason that Hendry spent trying to trade Sammy Sosa. Eventually, he did, of course, but in the process ignored other Cubs needs.
I don't think that this is so much of a concern this winter because, quite frankly, there isn't a whole lot that Hendry can do. Given all the expensive, long-term contracts that are untradeable, Hendry has basically tied his own hands. Maybe he's a masochist.
Meanwhile, Tom Ricketts told David Kaplan of WGN radio that there will be a slight increase in payroll, but no big contracts will be coming to town. Notice that he didn't say no free agents , and I think that was deliberate because he will not allow Hendry to take on another long-term contract just to move Bradley.
That's why I don't believe the latest Bradley-for-Vernon Wells swap rumor that has the Internet abuzz. For one thing, Bradley is a better offensive ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milton Bradley, Vernon Wells, Chicago Cubs

Ryan Dempster: Players would welcome back Milton Bradley

                    Sporting News

Cubs righthander Ryan Dempster told the Chicago Tribune that his teammates would welcome back outfielder Milton Bradley if the team is unable to trade him this offseason.
"We're a pretty good bunch of guys and we're pretty forgiving," Ryan Dempster said. "I just want the best for Milton, if it's for our team or another team. I just want him to be happy and want him to play baseball. ... We'd have our arms wide open and hope that things would get better."
Trading Bradley could prove difficult because of the attitude problems that led to his late-season suspension and the fact that he is owed $21 million over the next two seasons.
Bradley hit .257 with 12 homers and 40 RBIs in 124 games this season.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milton Bradley, Ryan Dempster, Chicago Cubs

New Cubs owner planning Wrigley Field upgrades

                    Sporting News staff reports

New Cubs owner Tom Ricketts told the Chicago Sun-Times that he plans to make immediate upgrades to Wrigley Field, in hopes of hosting the 2014 All-Star game.
"We intend to preserve the ballpark and improve it," Ricketts said. "It's a special place, and hopefully, when we all bring our kids or grandkids here, they are going to have that same experience when they walk up the stairs as people have today and have had for many years."
Ricketts said he doesn't plan to sell the naming rights to the park or install a JumboTron, though he said ticket prices will rise in 2010.
He hopes to put together a five- to seven-year plan for improvements and also would like to develop the area surrounding the stadium. That would include restaurants, shops and Cubs hall of fame.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field

Now that Tom Ricketts has control of the Cubs and Wrigley Field, he has plans to make immediate upgrades to the ballpark that turns 100 years old in 2014. Enough upgrades, he hopes, that Major League Baseball will agree to hold the 2014 All-Star Game at Wrigley.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field, All-Star Game

Laura Ricketts met a friend for lunch in Wrigleyville the same August day her family signed an agreement with Tribune Co. to purchase the Cubs. Her friend suggested they take a Wrigley Field tour to celebrate. They were sitting in the bleachers when the news reached another member of the tour via his BlackBerry. The deal was done, he announced. The Ricketts family had officially purchased the Cubs.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field
