The Deal Jim Hendry Should Make

As the Chicago Cubs move into an offseason of their fans' discontent, Jim Hendry has already said there are numerous issues he wants to address while moving towards 2009. With the unfortunate ability to move their organizational meetings up to the middle of November, some of these questions will likely be answered sooner rather than later.
The first couple of issues the organization will look at are whether to keep a significant member of their starting rotation and their closer from this past season: Ryan Dempster and Kerry Wood. Wood has consistently shown that he wants to stay in Chicago, and he had enough pull on the heartstrings of the Cubs fan base that he will likely stay.
Dempster, however, had a career year and will likely receive attention from numerous suitors that are turned on by his 17 wins. Keeping Dempster could be tricky.
The starting rotation has some holes to explore as well. Manager Lou Piniella has openly longed for two left-handed starting pitchers, and had that until Rich ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Jim Hendry

The Spectacular Story Of Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown

Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown is one of the best pitchers of all time. Born in a farm on October 7, 1876, Brown had a lot to overcome to become a Major League pitcher. He lost a finger at the age of seven to a corn-shredder.
Brown was also called "Miner" by teammates because before he was a ballplayer, he worked in a coal mine for several years.
He learned to pitch by aiming rocks at a barn wall and other wooden surfaces. Luckily for Brown, his grip on the ball caused an abnormal amount of spin on the ball.
Brown became a dominant pitcher, going 239-130 with an incredibly low 2.06 ERA. He played for the Cardinals in 1903, the Cubs from 1904-1912, the Reds in 1913, the St. Louis Terriers and Brooklyn Tip Tops in 1914, the Chicago Whales in 1915 and the Cubs again in 1916.
Wondering why they called him Three Finger Brown?
Reports later found that he actually had three fingers and not four. When he had the injury on the corn shredder, he injured another finger! Brown kept quiet about it until ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals

The Cubs will continue to focus on the team rather than finding a new owner this offseason.
Cubs GM Hendry deserves payoff

Cubs should give GM an extension, despite ownership uncertainty
                         >

John McDonough is doing a great job with the Blackhawks. Yet the reality is he should still be with the Cubs, as the club president. Remember, he left because the team's uncertain ownership situation gave him little choice when Hawks Chairman Rocky Wirtz offered him a five-year contract last November.

Anonymous Reader Comment Day After Cubs Lost

It’s getting worse! Pray that the Cubs don’t win anything in 2009 The Dodgers beat the Cubs 3-1 late Saturday (October 4th, 2008) in Los Angeles to advance to the National League Championship Series. The surprising three-game sweep of the team with the league's best record in the regular season ends the Cubs' chance to win the World Series for the first time in 100 years. Thank God the Los Angeles Dodgers swept the Chicago Cubs in the first round of the Major League Baseball playoffs! That means our $700 Billion (with a B!) dollar economic stimulus package has a chance of working; well, unless the Cubs get into the playoffs, or God forbid, actually get into the World Series next year. If they do—watch out World Economy! Watch out for a World War of some other calamity of biblical proportion! You think I’m making this up don’t you! Sadly NO. Every single time the Cubs have gotten into the World Series, this country has experienced calamity. Just take a look at the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs

Come To Think of It...Carlos Beltran Would Look Good in Cubbie Blue

Now that we've had some time to mourn the collapse of the 2008 Cubs, I figure it's time to move on and start trying to help GM Jim Hendry figure out how to fix this mess.
Of course, there are two schools of thought here. One says this isn't a mess at all. Hell, the Cubs won 97 games during the regular season and have now won back-to-back N.L. Central titles.
The other school, and one from which I'm currently attending, says that changes must be made to avoid a three-peat of sweeps in the postseason. Even teams that win championships face changes in this age of free agency and ever-escalating salaries.
I mean, really, do we actually want to go through another three-and-out in the playoffs? I know I don't.
All of which means we need to identify our gaps and try to fill them, understanding that this team is pretty well set, based on contract status and other factors. But nobody said this was going to be easy. This will take some creative thinking and perhaps some creative financing as ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Carlos Beltran, Chicago Cubs

NLCS Begins Tonight; ALCS Tomorrow

The magic number is four; well for two teams, reaching that number will mean they get a shot at the World Title. The other two will obviously go home wondering, "What if?" Tonight the National League Championship Series begins in Philadelphia tonight when they host the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Phillies, the top-seeded team in the N.L., breezed through the wild card with a three-games-to-one win over the Brew Crew. The Dodgers, the N.L. West Champions, absolutely dominated the Chicago Cubs with a clean sweep, after they took the first two games at Wrigley. Derek Lowe is pitted up against Cole Hamels in game one. This is destined to b a very physical series where you will see the home teams not necessarily having any advantage other than fans. Manny Ramirez is loving L.A. and who wouldn't, especially having Joe Torre as your manager. He is playing better and his team is feeding off his great play at the plate and in the outfield.
I see the Dodgers taking the series in six games with ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Los Angeles Dodgers, ALCS, Philadelphia Phillies, NLCS, Chicago Cubs

The Collapse of the Cubs Ticket Market: Worse than Wall Street

I didn't write this piece, but just wanted to put it up here as I was featured on BigLeagueStew.Com to talk about the Cubs World Series futures market.

  Yoonew.com
For those of you not familiar with Yoonew.com , it's a website that allows fans to buy and sell the rights to tickets as if they were shares in a stock market.
Think at the beginning of the season that your team is going all the way? Pick up an option on postseason tickets at a cheap price in April.
Believe your team won't keep it going all the way into October?
Sell that option high in July.
In fact, as you read this, the Yoonew exchange is busy with speculation over World Series tickets for the Red Sox (up) Rays (down) Phillies (down) and Dodgers (up) . It's fascinating to follow.

  Cubs' Collapse
Anyway, because I was masochistic curious enough to see a graphical representation of the Cubs' quick fall against the Dodgers, I asked Yoonew to send along their Cubs data from the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs

Chicago sees stories worth following

Neither the Cubs nor the White Sox will bring home baseball's ultimate prize, but they did get the Windy City as fired up as it has been at any time in recent memory this postseason. And here's why it doesn't have to end.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox

Time To Trade Derrek Lee?

Is it time to trade Derrek Lee? Cubs first baseman Derrek Lee is a fan favorite among Cubs fans, but could he be hurting the team? He only hit .291 with 20 HR in the three spot, while grounding into the most double plays in the league.
Maybe moving him to the five spot and Soriano to third would make a difference, but it looks like Lee is starting to decline. He has slowed down in the field and was injured through his prime, barely able to hit 20 homeruns over the past two seasons.
Trading Lee while his value is somewhat high would bring in a solid pitcher or two, while opening a spot for the Cubs to make a splash. I'm not saying trade Lee and use some of that money to sign Mark Teixeira, but that would show the Cubs' commitment to winning. The Angels, Atheltics, Mariners, and Giants are all in the market for a first baseman, and have the prospects worth the Cubs' while. We'll see what happens.
Rich Harden Back With Cubs in 2009

The Chicago Cubs announced that they will pick up Rich Harden’s contract option, worth $7 million, for the 2009 season.
While the Cubs are thrilled about keeping one of the most dominant pitchers in baseball, they are undoubtedly concerned that Harden might become the next Mark Prior. The 26 year-old righty will be back with the Cubs after posting a 10-2 record with a 2.07 ERA in 148 innings with the A’s and Cubs in 2008.
Harden was acquired along with reliever Chad Gaudin in a six player trade on July 8, and went unbeaten in his last ten starts of the season, including a 5-1 record and a 1.77 ERA with the Cubs. Harden set a career high with 181 strikeouts and led all pitchers in batting average against, as hitters batted only .183 against him in ‘08. Harden’s 25 starts in 2008 were second best to his career high of 31 starts in 2004 with the A’s. Now, the Cubs hope that the injury-prone Harden can stay healthy, something he has struggled with ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Rich Harden, Mark Prior

I Saw Your Faces: A Note to Cubs Fans

It is tough to digest, but Cubs fans played a big part in the Cubs' downfall. When we have a bad team on the field, we as fans relax and have fun. When we are blessed with a fantastic team, we get uptight and defensive. We put so much pressure on these guys that I am not surprised at what happened. Every single play was under a microscope; every pitch was critical beyond reality.
We took a team that had great pitching and great hitting and we helped break them when it mattered. In the back of the players mind had to be a little voice saying, "If you can't get it done, the fans will shun you."
This was made obvious when Wrigley Field was silenced by one grand slam, which put the Cubs down by only two runs, with four more at-bats to go. This was only about two weeks after the Cubs scored four runs in the ninth inning with two out and nobody on against the Brewers. The four runs tied the game and the Cubs won in the 12th inning.
Somehow, the Cubs fans inside Wrigley felt that a two-run ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs

Joe Torre Is Lou Pinella's Daddy

If the Yankees are Pedro's "daddy", then Joe Torre can be called Lou Pinella's "padre." That's Italian and Espanol by the way. The fear of many Cubs fans I spoke to entering this series, wasn't fear of the Dodgers' hitting or their young pitching, but the match-up in the dugout.
The match-up where Joe Torre has beaten Lou Pinella handily. Many fans don't even look at trends such as how the managers does against the other lifetime. They just look at the lineup, pitching, and blurt out "We're better."
Not so fast. Lou is a certified Hall of Famer. He was a solid ballplayer, managed the Reds to an unpredictable World Series title, and had successful regular seasons' in Seattle and Chicago. Notice I said "regular season." Ever since the 1990 upset win over the Oakland Athletics, Lou hasn't been able to get his team over the hump. He just hasn't. He's been a great manager in between his arrival in Seattle and his new job in Chicago. He's led them to seven playoff appearances. The Mariners have only ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Lou Piniella, Joe Torre, Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners

Rich Harden will not need surgery on his right shoulder, and the Cubs exercised the $7 million club option on the right-hander for 2009. Harden went 10-2 with a 2.07 ERA for Oakland and the Cubs this season. But a significant decline in his velocity late in the season suggested his shoulder was ailing.
