Pierzynski was clutch all season Whispers

It's clear why Tampa Bay beat the White Sox in the deciding Game 4 of the AL Division Series. The Rays stopped A.J. Pierzynski, who previously had had at least one hit in all five elimination games he had played in the postseason.

Rays, Red Sox scoreless after 3 innings (AP)

James Shields and Daisuke Matsuzaka escaped first-inning jams and the Boston Red Sox and Tampa Bay Rays were scoreless Friday night through three innings in the opener of the AL championship series. Shields, who also started Game 1 for Tampa Bay in its first-round playoff series against the Chicago White Sox, allowed one hit -- a two-out double by Kevin Youkilis in the first -- before retiring the...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Tampa Bay Rays, James Shields, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Boston Red Sox, Al Reyes, Chicago White Sox

The 2008 White Sox story was one of an up-and-down, rollercoaster ride that needed a 163rd-game tiebreaker to decide the division champ, leaving the club with a title seemingly belonging to them almost from the start.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago White Sox

Someday Ken Williams will heed his owner's advice. Tuesday wasn't it. Today won't be, either. Or tomorrow. As a matter of fact, start crossing days off on the calendar, one after another, and it won't change. There will be Williams filling out his ''big board,'' either physically or in his head, obsessed with it like Will Hunting solving a math formula.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Ken Williams, Chicago White Sox

Offseason Moves For the Chicago White Sox

After a season that exceeded most Chicago White Sox fans' expectations, the team will have to take a long look in the mirror to figure out how to get back to the World Series.
After a few mid-season moves, General Manager Kenny Williams will have to address several positions and long term contracts to reshape this team.
With the apparent departure of free agents Orlando Cabrera, Joe Crede, and Ken Griffey Jr., plus the long term contracts of Paul Konerko, Jim Thome, and Jermaine Dye, Williams has his purse strings tied pretty tight.
He will need to address the needs for a second baseman, third baseman, center fielder and lead off hitter. Free agents Chone Figgins of the Angels and Orlando Hudson of the Diamondbacks could possibly fill a few of their needs.
I think this offseason will be very busy for Kenny to give Ozzie the team with speed he has been looking for since the World Series year of 2005

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago White Sox, Al Reyes, Kenny Williams, Orlando Cabrera, Joe Crede

Usually the Billy Goat Tavern, the N. Michigan Ave. watering hole, is crowded with sports fans rooting for the beloved Cubbies or the less popular White Sox, both of whom reached the postseason this year. Not on Monday night.

White Sox Player Review: AJ Pierzynski

Now that the 2008 season has come to a close for the Chicago White Sox, it's time we take a look back at the season examine just how well each and every player who wore the White Sox logo did in the previous six months.
The player: AJ Pierzynski
Position: Catcher
  Vital statistics
  Batting average: .281
  OBP: .312
  SLG: .416
  OPS: .728
  Home runs: 13
  RBI: 60
  Runs: 66
  BB/K: 19/71

So what explains Pierzynski's jump from a .263 batting average in 2007 to a .281 clip in 2008? Pierzynski's BABIP (batting average on balls in play) was at .281 in 2007, and that jumped to .304 in 2008, which is very close to his career BABIP of .306.
In general, a player's BABIP should be around .120 ahead of his line drive rate. Pierzynski's line drive rate was .179 in 2008, so when you compare that to his .304 BABIP, that seems about right. Essentially, Pierzynski's 2008 performance is about what should be expected out of him at this point in his career.
Pierzynski is ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, A.J.
A Division Title and an Offseason Full Of Potential for the White Sox

The miracle that was the 2008 Chicago White Sox came to an end at U.S. Cellular Field on Sunday night before a heart-broken home crowd.
Stifled by the Rays pitching, the Pale Hosers could only muster two runs, courtesy of solo homeruns by captain Paul Konerko and Jermaine Dye. The season ended on a bad note, but that doesn't mean that fans should be disappointed. Sure, there won't be a World Series in Chicago, for either of the Cubs or the White Sox, but there was hope for a team that finished well below .500 in 2007. I can see a bright future for the Sox.
The acquisition of Alexei Ramirez and Carlos Quentin were two of the more important, if slightly less publicized moves of the off-season. Along with the majority of fans, I was asking who these two players were. Wow! I was in for a shock along with the rest of the baseball world.
Quentin was among the leaders for the MVP of the American League before he busted his wrist and was done for the season.
Cubs/ChiSox World Series Put on Hold

A franchise that lost 96 games the previous season playing in a horrid domed stadium in a small market with no tradition wins 97 games to take the crown in the American League East, baseball's toughest division.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox

Sox go above and beyond in 2008

Success with a little sadness pretty much sums up this season for the White Sox. From the first day of Spring Training, when few pundits gave the White Sox a chance to win even 85 games, the players and coaches on this team believed their group was of postseason caliber.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago White Sox

Chicago White Sox' Loss in ALDS Does Not Blemish a Great Season

Six months ago, I had no grand expectations for the White Sox.
I had this team winning 81 games and finishing third in the A.L. Central behind second-place Detroit and Cleveland, whom I had pegged to win the World Series.
On Mar. 31, the White Sox dropped a 10-8 game to Cleveland, in which Octavio Dotel blew the game on a Casey Blake home run after a few questionable calls by the umpires.
My thought after that game was "here we go again" as in, here we go towards another 90-loss season.
The White Sox subsequently got shut down by Fausto Carmona in the second game of that series, beginning the season 0-2.
The bullpen that Kenny Williams tried so hard to revamp in the offseason looked shaky. The offense that had struggled so mightily in 2007 looked just as weak. Alexei Ramirez didn't look like he belonged in the majors, and Carlos Quentin hadn't even seen the field yet, and there was plenty of doom and gloom to go around the South Side after just two games.
My, how things changed.

Chicago White Sox's Year-End Review

What grade would I give the Chicago White Sox for the performance during the 2008 campaign?
An "A."
The A.L. Central was expected to come down to a team that finished 14-games under .500 (the Detroit Tigers) and a team that finished at .500 (the Cleveland Indians). Instead, it came down to the Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins.
The White Sox had a roller-coaster year. They struggled early, bounced back strong, and then collapsed to force a 163rd game.

  WHAT WENT WRONG
July 10: Bobby Jenks goes on the disabled list. The White Sox proceed to lose three games (non-consecutive) to a terrible Kansas City team and two games to a terrible Texas team.
Bobby Jenks' injury affected the rest of the team and altered the bullpen, which had been so strong, to a complete collapse. It forced non-closers to close and other relievers to go longer than they were used to it. The bullpen blew leads or couldn't sustain ties.
July 20/Aug. 11: Jose Contreras goes down. Jose Contreras was a vital ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago White Sox

ALDS Postmortem: Rays sting White Sox

If Ozzie Guillen had his wishes, he probably would have started Mark Buehrle and John Danks in the first two games of the ALDS against the Rays, then brought Buehrle back on three days’ rest yesterday and had Danks ready to go on normal rest for tomorrow’s decisive game in St. Petersburg.

Guillen knew as well as anyone that the Rays were a pedestrian 25-24 against lefthanded starters this season, and 72-41 against righties. But because the White Sox needed two extra games to even get into the playoffs after frittering away a 2.5-game lead in the AL Central in September, he had to use Javier Vazquez in Game 1, then Gavin Floyd with the season on the line yesterday.

It might not have mattered anyway, what with Orlando Cabrera and Jim Thome each going 2-for-16 in the series, and A.J. Pierzynski and Dewayne Wise being Chicago’s most consistent hitters in the series. This was a team that lived for the three-run homer, but could only muster solo shots after Wise’s three-run ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago White Sox, ALDS, John Danks, Javier Vazquez

The Chicago Cubs: Completely Useless By ... October?

Is it better to have made the playoffs and lose, than to not make the playoffs at all?
The answer is, yes. Just ask a Pirates fan what they remember of the 2008 season, or any year since 1992.
Despite the depressingly anticlimactic postseason, history was made this year, albeit not the one Cubs fans wanted to see.
The 97 regular-season wins was the most since 1945, and also the first time in 100 years the Cubs made the playoffs in back to back years. It was also the first time in 102 years that the Cubs and White Sox were in the playoffs at the same time. Carlos Zambrano posted the first no-hitter by a Cubs pitcher in 36 years.
Even though this years Cubs team ended with the same result as the last 100 teams, this was a once in a lifetime team.
As another season ends, the infamous streaks grow. The World Series drought of 100 years, the N.L. pennant drought of 63 years, and the postseason losing streak of 9 games, after consecutive sweeps in October and losing the last two games to the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Ryan Dempster, Kerry Wood, Chicago White Sox
