The Angels Fall Short On Lackey and Halladay

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim free agent pitcher John Lackey, above, is reportedly headed to the Boston Red Sox after signing a five-year deal worth $85 million. That means the Angels will be without both Lackey and Chone Figgins, who was also a free agent and departed for a four-year deal worth $36 million with the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners were also just involved in a three-way trade with the Toronto Blue Jays and the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies have reportedly traded for the Blue Jays' ace Roy Halladay. He will receive the remaining $15.75 million in his contract for 2010, and the Phillies will sign him to a three-year, $60 million contract extension. The Phillies are trading away Cliff Lee to Seattle. The Mariners are having a market boom with having signed Figgins and now landing Lee. All other players' names involved in the three-way trade have yet to be revealed. On a brighter note, the Angels have signed 2009 World Series MVP Hideki Matsui to a one-year, $6.5 million ...

Chone Figgins brings speed and aggressiveness to Seattle. The Mariners won 85 games this year despite coming in last in the American League in on-base percentage (.314), OPS (.716), walks (421) and runs (640). Seattle was outscored by 52 runs, and the best chance to upgrade its lineup was at third base, where Adrian Beltre's .304 on-base percentage and $12 million salary came off the books. Enter Chone Figgins, who left the AL West rival Angels and signed a four-year, $36 million deal on Monday -- a savings of $3 million a year compared to Beltre. That's a lot of money for a player with 31 career homers, but Figgins fits perfectly into the Mariners' pitching-and-defense strategy as he's become a top-notch third baseman over the last three years. And his bat is just what Seattle needed -- over the last three years, Figgins has posted a .386 on-base percentage, so even though his 101 walks in 2009 represented a jump of 36 from his previous career high, it's not like he hasn't previously ...

The Mariners are fast. T3 fast. Team officials announced that they had come to terms with free agent Chone Figgins. With the announcement, the Mariners have added a dangerous one-two at the top of their lineup with Ichiro and Figgins. In addition to obtaining Franklin Gutierrez last year and bringing up Michael Saunders, the Mariners have speed. Throw Ichiro into the mix, and you have four guys who will burn up the basepaths. Throw in some power, and the awesomeness of Ken Griffey, Jr. and you've got yourself a contending ball club. Following Cy Young runner-up Felix Hernandez, and their maturing staff, the Mariners will build off of last season, besting their 85-win comeback season and at the very least battling all year. The aforementioned pitching may take some time to come around, but I say let them develop into the pitchers they show us they can be at times (Fister, Snell, Morrow)(but see below post script). The dominos are starting to fall at the hot corner in what has been the first significant free-agent action on this year's hot stove. First the back-to-back National League champion Phillies inked old friend Placido Polanco to a three-year, $18 million deal to replace outgoing free agent Pedro Feliz at third base. Now the Mariners have swiped the third baseman and leadoff hitter of the dominant team in their division by reaching a preliminary agreement (pending a physical) with former Angel Chone Figgins worth $36 million over four years. Those two deals leave outgoing Seattle third-sacker, Adrian Beltre, as the clear leader among the remaining free-agent third basemen and something of a must-have for the defending American League Central champion Twins, whose third-base hole is the deepest among the remaining contenders.
