BALTIMORE - Terry Francona announced after the game that Clay Buchholz, who allowed five runs over 2-1/3 innings in an 11-6 Sox loss to the Orioles was demoted to Double-A Portland to work out his pitching issues.

"I talked to Buck and we feel we need to give him a renewed start," said Francona who also indicated he thinks Buchholz, now 2-9 with a 6.75 ERA will respond.

He is going to replace Clay Bucholz in the rotation. BOSTON -- With knuckleballer Tim Wakefield on the disabled list, the role for his designated catcher, Kevin Cash, has changed.

There is one person with the Red Sox who understands what Clay Buchholz is going through. His experiences mirror Buchholz's enough that when manager Terry Francona and pitching coach John Farrell spoke to Buchholz about his struggles Monday, they brought up Jon Lester's name. Because, as Lester's season has made clear, emerging from the chasm is a real possibility.
Pregame Notes: Wakefield, Buchholz, Bay

-- Tim Wakefield, who was placed on the disabled list on Aug. 12 because of stiffness in the back of his right shoulder, will play catch on Saturday. It will be the first time the veteran knuckleballer will have picked up a ball since the previous Saturday, when discomfort in his shoulder forced him to forego a side session.

Last night's game confirmed something I've said repeatedly. The Rangers have the best offense in the league, and the only team that hits better than they do is whoever they're pitching against.
Charlie Zink 's debut was a disappointment. In 4.1 innings, he allowed 11 hits, 8 runs (all earned), and got only 1 strikeout against the team ranked second in K's. The only positive was Zink's 1 ...

The Joy of Sox found this 6 days ago on www.overthemonster.com [link]

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Boston Red Sox, Clay Buchholz

Clay had early run support but quickly blew the 3 run lead and did not even get an out in the fourth before he was pulled.
