The Yankees presented their ungrateful visitors with every imaginable chance to increase the crime rate in this town, but the Indians could not steal the game they desperately needed to steal. So the Yankees gift-wrapped it for them.

2008 has come and gone for the Cleveland Indians, and it would be safe to say that most of us thought they'd still be playing baseball. However, as baseball always seems to do, we have been humbled.
The division was weak and our biggest opponents were off to one of the worst starts ever from an expected contender. It was there for the taking, but injuries took their toll and high achievers from last year's magical year were no where to be found.
It was a roller-coaster ride to say the least. One experienced all kinds of emotions, which included confidence, pressure, anger, joy, hope, disappointment, and eagerness.
Now we reflect on that season with all the people here on Bleacher Report that went through the ups and downs of the Cleveland Indians' 2008 season.
There were loads more than this that stopped by and contributed throughout the year, and I ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Cleveland Indians

Deja Vu for CC Sabathia

New team. New league. New opponents. Same results.
In his first postseason start for the Milwaukee Brewers, CC Sabathia didn't even make it out of the fourth inning against the Philadelphia Phillies. Yet it continues the streak of non-productive postseason starts for the lefty.
In 2007, the Indians were on the verge of going to the World Series for the first time since 1997. Up three games to one on the Boston Red Sox, Sabathia took the hill at home.
Instead of closing the door on the Red Sox, CC choked, and the rest is history. The Indians went on to lose the series in seven games in Boston. Ask anybody around Cleveland, and they will tell you that the Indians would have won their first World Series title since 1948.
Instead, the postseason hangover was in effect in 2008, which led to CC being traded to the Brewers for prospects.
His cumulative 2007 postseason stats were as follows: 2-1 with a 8.80 ERA in three starts, while only going 15 innings. Also, he walked 13 batters in those 15 ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, C.C.

Pitchers Cliff Lee of the Cleveland Indians and Brad Lidge of the Philadelphia Phillies have been honored as Major League Baseball's Comeback Players of the Year.

The winners of the annual award were announced Tuesday.

Lee went 22-3 with an American League-leading 2.54 ERA. The previous season, he was 5-8 with a 6.29 ERA and was demoted to the minor leagues.

Lidge was a perfect 41-for-41 in save opportunities as the Phillies' closer. In 2007, he converted just 19 of 27 for the Houston Astros.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Cliff Lee, Cleveland Indians, Brad Lidge, Houston Astros

The Roller-Coaster Ride Comes to an End

The 2008 Cleveland Indians' season came to an end today with a 5-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Never mind that the White Sox were playing for a playoff spot. Personally, I could care less about who wins the A.L. Central. But to knock them out would have been nice.
On July 9, the Indians were 16 games UNDER .500. 16 games. In that month, they traded away their ace and 2007 American League Cy Young Award winner, CC Sabathia, a solid back-end starter in Paul Byrd, and also Casey Blake.
They were hit by the injury bug, losing Victor Martinez and Travis Hafner to big parts of the season. Also, add subpar seasons from Asdrubal Cabrera and Franklin Gutierrez and a bullpen that was the complete opposite of last year, and you have the makings of a disappointing season.
They could have given up, settled for 95 losses, and continue to be the biggest flop in Major League Baseball. But they didn't; they battled back.
They finish the year 81-81. So, since July 9, they are 16 games above .500. And ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Cleveland Indians

AL Central Breakdown

In the division that nobody wants to win, the only way the season will end on Sunday is if the White Sox lose and the Twins win. It’s the division that seemingly nobody wants to win, as both Chicago and Minnesota lost for the second straight day on Saturday. Let’s check out the matchups for the crucial final scheduled day of the regular season…

INDIANS AT WHITE SOX, 2:05 P.M.

 Cleveland: Bryan Bullington (0-1, 5.59)

The former Pirates prospect held the Red Sox scoreless for five innings out of the bullpen on Wednesday after getting lit up by the Royals in his return to the big leagues 11 days earlier. He’s never faced any of the White Sox, but he has pitched in Chicago before, allowing an unearned run in one relief inning to the Cubs last season. For his career, spanning eight major-league games, Bullington has allowed opponents to hit .315 against him with six homers in 28 innings.

 Chicago: Mark Buehrle (14-12, 3.87)

The lefthander has not fared well in ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Al Reyes, Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, Minnesota Twins, Cleveland Indians
