Sandy Alomar Jr.'s baseball career has brought him back home. The Indians' popular former All-Star catcher has been hired by new Cleveland manager Manny Acta as the team's first-base coach. Alomar had spent the past two seasons as a catching instructor for the New York Mets. He will also mentor Cleveland's catchers.

Alomar bolts Mets for Cleveland

Sandy Alomar Jr. has left the Mets to join Manny Acta's staff in Cleveland as first base coach. Alomar had been a finalist for the Mets bench coach job with Razor Shines and Dave Jauss , but the Daily News reported last week that the position is expected to go to Jauss, Baltimore's former bench coach. As a result, Shines is expected to move to first base and Alomar likely would have remained catching instructor.

Sandy Alomar Jr. is back with the Cleveland Indians. The popular former All-Star catcher has been hired by new Indians manager Manny Acta as a first-base coach. Alomar spent the past two years as a catching instructor for the New York Mets. He will mentor Cleveland's catchers. Alomar played 20 seasons in the majors -- 11 in Cleveland -- before retiring in 2007.

Rockies decline $5 million option on Betancourt

The Rockies have declined a $5 million option on right-hander Rafael Betancourt, a key setup man as the Rockies won the NL wild-card race. Betancourt can now become a free agent. Colorado general manager Dan O'Dowd says the team will continue to negotiate with the reliever. Betancourt went 4-3 with a 2.73 ERA in 61 games while splitting time with Cleveland and Colorado last season. He had 61 strikeouts to go with 20 walks and held opponents to a .209 batting average.

Blue Jays center fielder Vernon Wells has had surgery on his left wrist and is expected to be ready for spring training. The team said Friday that doctors repaired cartilage in his wrist, which he broke diving to make a catch against the Indians in 2008. Wells struggled through one of his worst seasons as a pro in 2009, batting just .260 with 15 home runs and 66 RBIs.

Sporting News staff reports The Cleveland Indians will be keeping a close eye on Jake Westbrook when the big right-hander starts his first game in the Puerto Rican winter league on Nov. 28. The team would like Westbrook, who did not pitch last season after undergoing elbow surgery, to be in their rotation and his work in Puerto Rico over a three-week period could elevate or deflate that optimism. "Our expectation is, at this point, that Jake will be in our rotation at the start of the year," assistant general manager Chris Antonetti told the Cleveland Plain Dealer. If Westbrook falters, one possible backup plan is to re-sign Carl Pavano, who was traded to the Twins at last season's deadline and finished with a combined record of 14-12 in 33 starts.

Sporting News staff reports Former Tigers star Kirk Gibson told the Detroit Free Press that he would love to become a major league manager. "I love challenges," the 52-year-old Gibson told the newspaper. "It seems like the ultimate challenge." Gibson has served in various coaching capacities for the Tigers and Arizona Diamondbacks over the past six seasons and recently signed a two-year contract to continue as Arizona bench coach. He just had his first managerial interview, with the Cleveland Indians, who eventually hired Manny Acta.
