Tim Lincecum: A Giant Among Men

The National League Cy Young race has many deserving candidates. Brandon Webb, Ryan Dempster, and CC Sabathia are all viable candidates for the award. Yet, the one pitcher who deserves this award is not from a big-market team and is on the roster of one of the worst teams in the worst division in baseball.
Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum has only been in the league three years but is considered one of the best pitchers in the National League. Yet when the names float around for major awards, Lincecum's is nowhere to be found.
At only 72-90, the San Fransisco Giants ended their season in fourth place in the N.L. West. Lincecum managed to post an impressive 18-5 record, despite a notable lack of run support and a shaky bullpen. Not to mention his 2.69 ERA and league-leading 265 strikeouts.
In comparison to the other pitchers in the National League, Lincecum is second in ERA, eighth in WHIP, and second in BAA. He ranks fourth in IP in all of Major League Baseball. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Tim Lincecum, Cy Young, Brandon Webb, Ryan Dempster, C.C.
A Different View on the NL Cy Young Race

Brandon Webb. No doubt about it.
Since 1998, the teams of the 20 Cy Young winners in both leagues had an average of 93 wins, with all but one reaching the threshold of 85 wins (Brandon Webb, 2007, when Arizona finished with 76 wins).
As the D-Backs are currently 10 games ahead of the Giants—Tim Lincecum is the only other reasonable choice for the NL Cy Young, as I'm not including CC Sabathia, who started more games in the AL than in the NL—with 82 wins, look for the voters to choose Brandon Webb.

So here's the question: Is Webb the right choice?
To test this, I developed a new stat called Wins Saved. First, I determined the amount of runs each team in the MLB would have had to not given up by using the Pythagorean Formula, which I'll call RPLL, or runs per less loss.
(Here's an example: Tampa Bay scored 774 runs and gave up 671; according to the Pythagorean Formula, using a 1.83 exponent, the Rays should have won 91.5 games and lost 69.5. I found out the amount of runs less ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Cy Young, Brandon Webb, Tim Lincecum

Tim Lincecum Deals In Season Finale: Who Woulda Thunk It?

For a game that meant a whole lot of nothing, the season finale for the San Francisco Giants meant a whole lot to Tim Lincecum.
In his final start of 2008, Lincecum did what he did best...deal a gem.
Lincecum (18-5) finished with 13 strikeouts, adding to his season total of 265. With those 265 strikeouts, he became the first Giant to lead the Major Leagues in that category since Bill Voiselle had 161 in 1944.
And when asked about it after the game, he answered in typical Lincecum fashion.
"That's cool. That's all I can really say," said Lincecum. "It's a lot of hard work, trying to work on my pitches and throw them for strikes."
What might be as important as leading the world in strikeouts this season was the ability to bounce back and put good thoughts back into the Cy Young voters' minds after one of his worst outings of the season on Tuesday against Colorado.
"Right now, all I can do is hope and wait," Lincecum said.
Lincecum got off to a hot start, striking out the first nine ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants, Cy Young
