First Base a Question Mark for New York Mets in 2009

Could Carlos Delgado be a Met in 2009?
If you asked any Met fan at the end of June if they wanted to see the former Toronto Blue Jays slugger in orange and blue for another season you would hear a definitive "No!" That was an easy answer at the time. Delgado was hitting .228, and looked like he was shot.
This was before Delgado's fantastic July and start of August, which saw him hit 10 home runs and raise his average to .264. Delgado has moved up to the cleanup role, has protected David Wright successfully, and has taken the pressure off of the struggling Carlos Beltran.
So if Delgado continues playing this way, and for the season hits about .265, with 30-plus home runs and 90-plus RBI, should the Mets pick up their team option on Delgado for 2009? Maybe even at 36, he still has a lot left in him.
I am not sure at the moment what the Mets should do. I believe it all depends on how Dan Murphy and Nick Evans play for the rest of the season. Unless the Mets want to shell out an insane ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Mets, Carlos Delgado, David Wright

David Wright bailed out the Mets' bullpen with a game-winning blast in his final at-bat Thursday. And he provided his entire pitching staff some breathing room with another two-run shot in his first trip to the plate in Friday night's 3-0 win over Florida.

A New York Mets' Fan Relives His First Visit to Shea Stadium

The following commentary is straight from the mouth of a future Mets Lifer who attended his first Mets game ever on Thursday afternoon. This is such a great narrative of baseball games through the eyes of children.
He saw a fantastic game, but the best part is, to him, it didn't matter if the Mets won or lost. He enjoyed the game because of the atmosphere, the snacks, and the fact that he was there with his dad and grandpa.
My name is Matthew Siroty and today (Thursday, Aug. 7, 2008) I went to my first Mets game. I went with my dad and grandpa. I wore my David Wright t-shirt with No. 5 on the back. I was excited to go, and I even missed a day of gymnastics camp to go. We took two trains to get to Shea Stadium and the Long Island railroad was very nice. When we got there I saw two stadiums, Citi Field and Shea Stadium. There were a lot of people and a lot of kids, probably because it was Sesame Street Day and camps came.
I gave my Sesame Street coloring book that they gave me to my ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Mets, Shea Stadium, David Wright

Wright stuff despite matchup mess

So David Wright was right about not needing a rest, bailing out the bullpen with his walkoff homer. But the beleaguered pen could use some rest, thanks to Jerry Manuel’s decisions. Here’s a game in which the starter went into the eighth inning. Ordinarily, you would expect the Mets to use two relievers, the eighth-inning guy and the closer. Maybe three if you wanted to exploit a matchup in the eighth. But without a closer or an eighth-inning guy, the Mets used five relievers.

Forget about finding a temporary closer - Manuel needs to find someone he trusts to throw a full inning, especially if he’s going to pull Johan Santana after 104 pitches. If you use five relievers, none who pitched to more than two batters, on a regular basis, you’ll burn out the bullpen.

Aaron Heilman and Duaner Sanchez used to be trusted for longer stints, but both are struggling. If Manuel can try out people as closer, why not see if Joe Smith or Pedro Feliciano can be more than a situational ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, David Wright, Jerry Manuel, New York Mets

David Wright's Walk-Off Homer Rescues Mets

In the bottom of the ninth, David Wright blasted a Heath Bell slider just over the left field wall at Shea to give the Mets a five to three win.
After making a costly error in the field and two terrible baserunning mistakes in the first two games of the series, there was much talk of the slumping Wright getting a day off. However, Wright talked manager Jerry Manuel into letting him play and he responded with three hits including the game winning home run.
After a 1-19 slump, Wright has recovered in the past two games with five hits in ten at-bats.
Despite two more poor showings from the bullpen, the Mets managed to take two of three games in the series from the San Diego Padres.
Wright rescued the Mets bullpen, which spoiled yet another outstanding start from Johan Santana. Entering the eighth inning, Santana had allowed just two hits and one run, a Chase Headley solo homer, while striking out seven Padres. The Mets had a three to one lead.

New York Mets Using a Very Young Lineup

After reading the starting lineup posting from Metsblog.com at work today, it actually amazed me to look at the infielders. The entire infield was homegrown.
Wright at third, Reyes at short, Reyes at second, and Evans at first. Even Dan Murphy was in at left field.
Looking at the box score today as well, the young guys got the job done, especially Murphy. This guy has really shown me something in the first few games he's been called up. If anything, he's at least proven he can compete here. He may not keep up his.400+ average for much longer, but I like what I've seen so far.
I have a feeling this is the kind of lineup we may become familiar with next year and in the years to follow. Despite the fact that I have assumed Delgado will be gone next year, his resurgence this second half may sway the Mets into picking up his option. I'm still very nervous about that, but I feel better knowing what we have in the way of young talent.
Now if they can truly help us win this year is another story. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Mets, David Wright, Carlos Delgado

SUDDENLY, NOTHING'S GOING WRIGHT FOR DAVID

He came into last night on an 0-for-15 skid, plated the winning run with an error in the seventh and fittingly made the last out in a 4-2 loss to San Diego.
Not the Wright stuff

If Jose Reyes had forgotten how many outs there were and been doubled off first - the day after making another baserunning blunder - and later made an error to allow what would be the winning run to score, he’d be ripped as immature or worse. When David Wright does the same thing, there’s concern that maybe he needs a day off. But if Wright is to be the team leader and face of the franchise, he must be held to the same high standard.

If Wright hadn’t been doubled off first in the fifth, the Met would have had two on and two out and Fernando Tatis coming up. There’s no asssurance that they would have scored. But in a game in which the Mets scored only twice, they couldn’t afford to waste an opportunity.

Jerry Manuel said after the game that he thought about giving Wright a day off, but Wright told him he didn’t need it. But it shouldn’t be Wright’s decision. With a 12:10 start following a night game, followed by a critical series against the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, David Wright, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Florida Marlins
