Back in July, several players told me at the All-Star Game that Derek Jeter was the most widely respected player in baseball. Apparently, Sports Illustrated agrees. The magazine bestowed its Sportsman of the Year award on the Yankees captain today, making him the first member of the organization ever to receive the honor from SI. Jeter had a memorable season, batting .334 with a .406 on-base percentage and 212 hits, finishing third in the American League’s MVP voting. He captivated the city in early September with his chase of Lou Gehrig’s franchise hits record, one he claimed as his own on Sept. 11 against the Orioles. Jeter’s banner year was capped earlier this month when he helped lead the Yankees to their 27th World Series title, the fifth for the shortstop since he broke into the majors in 1996. Derek Jeter Named Sports Illustrated's "Sportsman of the Year"

While Derek Jeter may have missed out on winning the American League MVP Award to Joe Mauer, this is one award no one can take away from him. It was announced today that Jeter will be named Sports Illustrated's Sportsman of the Year. This is the first time that a Yankee has won the award in the 56 years of its existence, and the first time a baseball player has won since 2004, when the entire Boston Red Sox team was honored. Jeter had one of the best years of his career in 2009, as he was ranked in the Top 10 of several major American League categories. This led to the claiming of his fourth AL Silver Slugger Award and fourth AL Gold Glove. But, as Sports Illustrated points out, the award does not simply recognize great accomplishments on the field, but off the field as well. Jeter led the Yankees to their first World Series title since 2000 and his fifth overall while having one of the best seasons of his career. Yankees PA announcer Bob Sheppard says he's retiring

Sporting News staff reports According to MLB.com, longtime Yankees public address announcer Bob Shephard officially has decided to retire. Sheppard, 99, worked his first Yankees game April 17, 1951, and worked approximately 4,500 in his career. "I have no plans of coming back," Sheppard told the Web site. "Time has passed me by, I think. I had a good run for it. I enjoyed doing what I did. I don't think, at my age, I'm going to suddenly regain the stamina that is really needed if you do the job and do it well." Sheppard didn't handle any games in 2009 and said he hasn't stepped foot in new Yankee Stadium. However, a recording of his voice still is used to introduce shortstop Derek Jeter.

I realize that Derek Jeter won the 2009 Gold Glove award for shortstops a few weeks ago, and this article may seem dated. Honestly, I admit that I've just been a little lazy. But part of it stems from the fact that I didn't want to get into this mess just yet. I think I'm ready now, however, and before you comment on this article, please read it. I did put some thought into this, and the least you could do is respond with something intelligent. That having been said... The Gold Glove award is a joke. An absolute joke. Getting upset about just means that you like getting upset about things. Hardly any thought is put into it, nobody cares, it really is not that serious. However, some people do like to care about it anyway. One of those people is Rob Neyer. Neyer recently wrote, "And with Jeter and Hunter and Polanco and especially Jones, they just flat blew it, overlooking true excellence in favor of gaudy hitting stats or superficially impressive defensive performances." As expected, Joe Mauer captured AL MVP honors today in a lopsided vote, collecting 27 of the 28 first-place votes. I thought it would be unanimous, but one voter decided Mauer was worthy of a second-place vote. His first place vote went to … Mark Teixeira? Derek Jeter? No. It went to Miguel Cabrera. Miguel Cabrera? The Tigers slugger had a solid season, but after hitting .345 through August 25, he batted .259 over the final 38 games of the season as the Tigers watched their commanding lead over Mauer’s Twins fall apart. Throw in the fact that he was arrested in a domestic violence incident during the final weekend of the season - again, while his team was coughing up its playoff spot - should have been enough to knock him down a spot or two on the ballot. Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira had brilliant seasons in 2009, but when the American League MVP award is announced later this afternoon, they’ll be fighting it out for second place. That’s because Joe Mauer of the Twins should be a runaway winner - possibly a unanimous one - after posting a tremendous season of his own. Despite missing the first month of the season, Mauer led the league with a .365 average, .444 on-base percentage and .587 slugging percentage, adding 28 home runs, 96 RBI, 30 doubles, 191 hits and Gold Glove defense behind the plate to his impressive campaign. I was one of the guys touting Teixeira for the MVP award in mid-August, not because I didn’t believe Mauer was worthy of the honor, but because the Twins were 56-62 and 6 ½ games out of first place in a weak division. At the time, I said Mauer would only capture the award if he helped turn his team around and got the Twins into the playoff race. Well, the Twins were 70-72 on Sept. 12, still 5 ½ games ...
