Mariners, Tigers reportedly discussing deal

                    Sporting News staff reports

Amid rumors that the Tigers and Mariners are talking trade, The Detroit News opined the teams are a good fit.
The Mariners want a left fielder and a starting pitcher, and the Tigers can offer center fielder Curtis Granderson and righthander Edwin Jackson. In return, the Mariners could build a package around righthander Brandon Morrow and a couple of highly regarded prospects -- perhaps shortstop Carlos Triunfel and third baseman/shortstop Matt Tuiasosopo.
This past season, the Tigers acquired lefthander Jarrod Washburn from the Mariners, so the two general managers have some recent history.
Granderson and Jackson are expected to draw interest from many teams, if the Tigers indeed decide to make them available in trade talks.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, Curtis Granderson, Edwin Jackson, Brandon Morrow

Cardinals won't turn to Bay if Holliday leaves

                    Sporting News staff reports

Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that free-agent outfielder Jason Bay isn't a priority for the team and won't be even if free-agent outfielder Matt Holliday signs elsewhere.
Bay is considered a Plan B for any team that loses the Holliday sweepstakes, but the Cardinals apparently will shift their focus to starting pitching (perhaps a trade for Detroit Tigers right-hander Edwin Jackson or someone from the Atlanta Braves' rotation surplus) and lower-priced outfield options (such as free agent Xavier Nady) if they don't re-sign Holliday.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, St. Louis Cardinals, Matt Holliday, Jason Bay, Detroit Tigers, Edwin Jackson, Atlanta Braves

Tigers' Dombrowski says there will be no fire sale

                    Sporting News staff reports

Although center fielder Curtis Granderson and righthander Edwin Jackson have been mentioned in trade rumors recently, Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told The Detroit News that Tigers fans should remain calm.
"I can assure you 100 percent that we do not have any kind of fire sale, or salary dump, or whatever you might call it, taking place," Dombrowski said. "I can also tell you that I've been part of that in my career, so I know what that situation is like."
The newspaper noted the team will begin to shed some big salaries (right fielder Magglio Ordonez, left fielder/DH Carlos Guillen and starting pitchers Dontrelle Willis and Nate Robertson) in the next couple of seasons and wants to be in position to capitalize on that. Thus, it will listen to offers for its current players in hopes of netting future stars.
"To me, you're always in position where you listen to what ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Detroit Tigers, Curtis Granderson, Edwin Jackson, Dave Dombrowski

Mariners talk to Tigers about Jackson, may be looking at Granderson

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Detroit Tigers and Seattle Mariners have discussed a possible trade involving right-hander Edwin Jackson, but the talks aren't that serious, FOXSports.com reports.

The Web site reports the Tigers are looking to get back pitchers who will make the major league minimum next season. FOX reports right-handers Brandon Morrow and Shawn Kelley fit that description and would be good fits for the Tigers.

Jackson was the focus of much speculation at last week's general managers' meetings, as rumors circulated that the Tigers would need to trade players to hold the line on their payroll. Jackson is due to receive a raise from his $2.2 million 2009 salary. He made the AL All-Star team this year and finished 13-9 with a 3.62 ERA.

FOX reports the Mariners tried to acquire Jackson last offseason in a three-team deal that would have sent J.J. Putz to Detroit.

The site also reports that the M's have some ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, Curtis Granderson, Edwin Jackson, Brandon Morrow

Should the Detroit Tigers Trade Miguel Cabrera?

The Detroit Tigers are coming off of a heart-breaking finish to their 2009 season. After squandering away the division lead to the Minnesota Twins, they lost a one-game playoff to them and missed the playoffs entirely.
The Tigers now seem focused on shredding payroll heading into the 2010 season. Edwin Jackson and Curtis Granderson have both been mentioned as possibly being on the move to lower a payroll that already sits at well over $100 million between just 10 players.
Ken Rosenthal speculates in a recent column that if the Tigers are willing to dangle Jackson and Granderson, they should look at moving Miguel Cabrera as an alternative. Cabrera, the highest-paid Tiger, still has six years and $126 million remaining on his current deal.
Rosenthal suggests that if the Red Sox were willing to offer Mark Teixeira an eight-year, $170 million contract last year, they should be able to take on Cabrera's deal with ease. He even offers up a proposed trade between the two teams: Jonathan Papelbon, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Detroit Tigers, Miguel Cabrera, Curtis Granderson

Cubs, Angels, Yankees among teams interested in Tigers CF Granderson

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs plan to make an aggressive push to acquire Tigers center fielder Curtis Granderson if Detroit makes him available in a trade. The newspaper reported the Angels and Yankees also are believed to be very interested in trading for Granderson, who is a Chicago native.
Any deal for the center fielder likely would have to be loaded with top-notch prospects and might not happen until the winter meetings (Dec. 7-10). Newsday speculated Granderson would move from center field to left with the Angels, who would keep Torii Hunter in center.
Granderson hit only .249 this season, but he had a career-high 30 homers.

In other Tigers news, the team will not try to re-sign free agent first baseman/DH Aubrey Huff or free-agent left-hander Jarrod Washburn, according to MLive.com.Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told the Web site that he spoke with both players recently, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Curtis Granderson, Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees

Spelling Closer With a K (or 100)

Willie Hernandez was at the center of it all for the 1984 Tigers.

A happy 55th birthday today to Willie Hernandez, the closer for the Tigers when I was growing up, and the last lefthanded pitcher to win MVP honors in either league, when he also won the Cy Young for the 1984 Tigers.

That year, Hernandez had 32 saves as he went 9-3 with a 1.92 ERA, while pitching 140.1 innings. Only eight closers since the creation of the save rule in 1969 have had 30 or more saves in a season, struck out 100 or more hitters and posted an ERA below 2.00. And here they are, courtesy of the always-useful, and recently revamped Baseball-Reference Play Index …

Eric Gagne, 2003 Dodgers - 55 SV, 137 K, 1.20 ERA
Bruce Sutter, 1977 Cubs - 31 SV, 129 K, 1.34 ERA
Billy Wagner, 1999 Astros - 39 SV, 124 K, 1.57 ERA
John Hiller, 1973 Tigers - 38 SV, 124 K, 1.44 ERA
Eric Gagne, 2002 Dodgers - 52 SV, 114 K, 1.97 ERA
John Wetteland, 1993 Expos - 43 SV, 113 K, 1.37 ERA

Yankees To Target Tigers Curtis Granderson for 2010 Outfield

Let the baseball rumors begin!
In a story reported late last night by the New York Post's Joel Sherman, the Yankees will apparently look to upgrade their outfield situation by inquiring and possibly looking into make a deal for Tigers center fielder Curtis Granderson.
Here is some of the article that will be featured today in the Post from Sherman:
"In a cost-cutting frame of mind, the Tigers have let teams know Curtis Granderson could be had for the right package, an NL executive told The Post.
The Yankees will almost certainly push to the front of the line when it comes to Granderson. He obviously would be an upgrade on the Melky Cabrera/Brett Gardner duo. In addition, the Yankees could quickly face a need to restore lefty power if Johnny Damon and/or Hideki Matsui leave to free agency. Granderson hit a career-high 30 homers last season, the fourth most by an AL lefty.
Brian Cashman met with Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski at the GM Meetings, which concluded yesterday, but it is not ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Curtis Granderson, Detroit Tigers

Tigers' Jackson, Reds' Phillips may be in play as trade talk grows

                    Sporting News staff reports

Day 2 of the general managers' meetings in Chicago produces its share of trade rumors. Two of the juiciest involve Tigers right-hander Edwin Jackson and Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips. Both may be shopped for budgetary reasons.

FoxSports.com reports Detroit is making Jackson available as it tries to, as the Web site put it, "alleviate (its) payroll crunch." Jackson made $2.2 million this year and is arbitration-eligible after going 13-9 with a 3.64 ERA. He also made the AL All-Star team.

Detroit is likely to maintain one of the highest payrolls in the game (it was about $130 million in 2009), but the club already has about $100 million committed to just nine players, not including Jackson. The Tigers also need to pay ace Justin Verlander, who is due a big raise in arbitration.
