Twins exercise 2011 option on Cuddyer

The Minnesota Twins have picked up outfielder Michael Cuddyer's $10.5 million option for 2011.

Cuddyer hit a career-high 32 home runs to lead the team. He also had 94 RBIs and was sixth in the American League with 73 extra-base hits.

When slugger Justin Morneau went out with a back injury in September, Cuddyer moved from right field to first base. He hit .352 with seven homers and 22 RBIs in the next 19 games as the Twins leapfrogged the Tigers and won the AL Central title.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Minnesota Twins, Michael Cuddyer, Justin Morneau, Detroit Tigers

JJ Putz to Detroit Tigers Makes Too Much Sense Not To Happen

Last off season, JJ Putz was the best move the Tigers didn't make.
If not for an injury to Fernando Perez that killed a three-way deal involving the Rays, JJ Putz may have been hamstringing Detroit in 2009 and not the Mets, and Edwin Jackson may have formed a dominant pitching tandem with Felix Hernandez instead of Justin Verlander.
Putz became a free agent today when New York declined his nine million dollar option. This time around, the Tigers have much less to lose in taking a shot on the Trenton native and former Michigan wolverine.
Putz's story this year was one of injury and inconsistency. As recently as Spring Training 2008 however, he was being mentioned in the same sentence with Jonathan Papelbon, Francisco Rodriguez, and Mariano Rivera (that was the pecking order at the time; sickening I know) as one of the game's elite closers.
He lost his closer's job to the aforementioned Rodriguez when the Mets traded for him last year. At the time, he accepted the role but word on the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Detroit Tigers, J.J.
Tigers part ways with Treanor, Thames

Marcus Thames' Tigers tenure is likely over. The team removed him from the 40-man roster Friday, the first step towards making the slugging outfielder a free agent. The move was part of the Tigers' maneuverings to prepare their 40-man roster. Catcher Matt Treanor also was taken off the roster and will become a free agent.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Detroit Tigers, Marcus Thames, Matt Treanor

Detroit Tigers' Hot Stove: Marcus Thames

The World Series has wrapped up, and it has gotten chilly in the Midwest.
While some of the Tigers are home in the tropics or enjoying 18 holes in Florida, The Hammer Toss will keep you warm with the hot stove.

Marcus Thames is a favorite for discussion here at The Hammer Toss because he could have such a big impact on the Tigers' offense, if given enough at-bats.
  2009 Season Recap
Thames went on the disabled list in mid April with a cartilage strain in his ribcage. He missed about seven weeks before returning in June.
Thames started 17 games in left field and had a few innings at first base. He got most of his 258 at-bats by being the DH. He hit only 13 home runs this year and drove in 36.
On par with his career averages, he got as many hits as strikeouts and had a meager batting average (.252).

  Looking Forward
Thames was on a one-year contract for 2009. There has been talk around the Tigers' community of not offering him arbitration for 2010, and therefore no ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Detroit Tigers, Marcus Thames

Knee problems gone, Washburn eager to keep pitching

                    Sporting News staff reports

Detroit Tigers left-hander Jarrod Washburn told the Seattle Mariners' Web site he entered spring training with plans to retire after the 2009 season. That was because he struggled so much in 2008 (5-14, 5.69 ERA).
Washburn, however, had his troublesome knee surgically repaired last week and should be fully recovered by spring training. The free-agent-to-be now plans to pitch next season.

Washburn told the Web site that Seattle is among the teams at the top of his list. Washburn went 8-6 with a 2.64 ERA in 20 starts for Seattle this season before being dealt to Detroit. Hindered by the knee problems, Washburn went just 1-3 with a 7.33 ERA in eight starts for the Tigers.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Detroit Tigers, Seattle Mariners, Jarrod Washburn

Detroit Tigers' Hot Stove Primer

The World Series is close to wrapping up, and it has gotten chilly in the midwest. While some of the Tigers are home in the tropics or enjoying 18 holes in Florida, The Hammer Toss will keep you warm with the hot stove. Jump for joy!

Needless to say the offseason for the Detroit Tigers started on a bit of a sour note after losing game 163. Despite that I chose a couple reasons to stay optimistic. Foremost among them was, "Don't worry, guys, we would have been slaughtered by the Yankees anyway."
Does that mean I didn't hope for the Tigers to win and get in? Of course not! Despite what the 2009 team had going for it, it was over weighted with failure. I was excited about the idea of thinking about the future.
That meant the offseason was here! Now is the time where we all get to put on our general manager shoes and think about what can be done to build a better ball club for next year.
It is no secret that the American League Central Division was the weakest division in baseball this ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Detroit Tigers, Marcus Thames, Carlos Guillen, Placido Polanco
