Poll: To which free agent(s) should the Mariners offer salary arbitration?

As I detailed earlier, the deadline for offering salary arbitration to ranked free agents is Tuesday at 9 p.m. Seattle time. The Mariners have two Type B free agents to decide about: Erik Bedard and Adrian Beltre. If they offer arbitration, they'll get a sandwich pick between the first and second round if the player signs elsewhere. Ah, but they might accept arbitration, costing the Mariners a pretty penny in salary. There are pros and cons for either decision. What do you think?

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Seattle Mariners, Erik Bedard, Adrian Beltre

Mariners have room to be active offseason spenders

                    Sporting News staff reports

The surprise shoppers of the offseason? The Seattle Times noted the Mariners will shed close to $50 million from their 2009 payroll this offseason.
Among the players coming off the books: left-handers Jarrod Washburn and Erik Bedard, third baseman Adrian Beltre, right-hander Miguel Batista and catcher Kenji Johjima. Washburn was traded to Detroit late in the season, Johjima elected to return to Japan and the others are free agents.
Giving the team even more flexibility is the fact that it has only three players under contract beyond 2010: right-hander Carlos Silva, shortstop Jack Wilson and right fielder Ichiro Suzuki.
The Times reports Mariners are expected to address first base, third base and the rotation, among other areas, in the offseason.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Seattle Mariners, Jarrod Washburn, Erik Bedard, Adrian Beltre, Miguel Batista

Orioles could go after free agent pitchers Sheets, Bedard

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Orioles, who had the worst pitching in the American League in 2009, would consider adding veterans Ben Sheets or Erik Bedard, according to MASNSports.com.
"They would have to be vetted medically," team president Andy MacPhail said of the injury-plagued hurlers. "They don't get excluded from consideration. We recognize there is a risk that goes with it, but if the potential reward is just as great or greater than the risk, it's something you have to look at. Sheets underwent shoulder surgery in February and did not pitch in 2009. He went 13-9 for the Brewers in 2008.
Bedard, a former Oriole, has pitched just 30 games total for the Mariners over the past two seasons.
The O's gave up more runs, hits and home runs than any team in the AL last season.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Ben Sheets, Erik Bedard, Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners, Baltimore Orioles

Royals exec tries to cool talk about Bedard

                    Sporting News staff reports

Responding to a Yahoo! Sports report that claimed Kansas City was "going hard" after free-agent left-hander Erik Bedard, Royals assistant general manager J.J. Picollo told the team's website that the report in question was an "overstatement."
Picollo acknowledged the Royals' interest in Bedard but said the team would have to do much more research into the health of the oft-injured starter.
In other Royals news, Jose Guillen told the team's Web site that he wants to play for Kansas City and start in right field in 2010. Guillen recently was linked to the New York Mets in trade rumors.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Kansas City Royals, Erik Bedard, Jose Guillen, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners
