Bucky Dent Played Ball with Teixeira’s Father

  (Zell's Pinstripe Blog)
What a small world. Mark Teixeira’s father played high school baseball with Bucky “F******” Dent! Bucky Dent was a shortstop at Hialeah High School back in 1969. John Teixeira was the backup catcher on the team.

“John was kind of the backup catcher, I was a year ahead of him,” Dent said from Florida. “I kind of lost track of him for a long, long time and then I saw a Teixeira playing for Georgia Tech, and I was wondering if that was his son because I don’t remember too many Teixeiras being around.”
“When Texas drafted him, Mark came down to work out and I was hitting him some grounders and I saw his dad standing off to the back and I went over there, I hadn’t seen him in years,” Dent recalled of that August day in 2001. “I asked him what happened, and he said he left and went in the Navy. That was the first time I had seen him in a long, long time.

Hanley In Boston? The Red Sox Pray.

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly been shopping prospects like Clay Buchholz, Jacoby Ellsbury, as well as others to the Florida Marlins for shortstop stud Hanley Ramiriz. The Red Sox see Ramirez as an outfielder while Jed Lowrie would play shortstop.
Although Ellsbury was a 2007 postseason phenomenon and third in 2008 rookie of the year voting, and Buchholz is famous for his no-no, I do not see this happening.
The Marlins may have made bad trades in the past but seem to see themselves as possible contenders for a Rays-esque turnaround. Hanley was recently given a long term contract and is highly valued as one of the top shortstops in the league and Jacoby and Clay are still unproven.
On the other hand, if the Red Sox unloaded a treasure chest of prospects, the Marlins could be enticed by the level of young talent on the table. However, based on Epstein's track record, such an offer is unlikely.
I belive the Red Sox shouldn't be wasting their time with offers that out of reach. They ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Boston Red Sox, Florida Marlins, Hanley Ramirez, Al Reyes, Jarrod Saltalamacchia

SF Giants Making a Move for Manny Ramirez? Scott Proctor Headed to the Marlins

  (Zell's Pinstripe Blog)
According to the Denver Post, the San Francisco Giants might be making a move to obtain Manny Ramirez. The Giants have a great pitching staff, so if they really want to contend this year then this would make sense. They could really use him in that lineup, but I doubt Manny would be happy there.

  Footnotes.
The Giants, the NL West’s most active team this winter, are quietly making an aggressive play for free agent Manny Ramirez, according to a major-league source.
Troy E. Renck, The Denver Post

In other news, former Yankee, Scott Proctor is headed to the Marlins. He was non-tendered by the Dodgers last month and he is reportedly close to signing a deal with Florida. He is supposedly going to sign a one-year contract worth $750,000, with $250,000 in incentives. I wish Scott Proctor the best of luck next year. He was one of my favorite Yankee relievers.

Right-hander Scott Proctor's birthday present is a contract with the Florida Marlins.

The former Los Angeles Dodgers reliever has agreed to a $750,000, one-year contract that includes $250,000 in incentives, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Friday. The person didn't want to be identified because the deal is contingent on Proctor passing a physical Monday.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Scott Proctor, Florida Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers

Big lefty, small impact for Orioles

Another entry leading with basketball, as former Net Mark Hendrickson has signed with the Baltimore Orioles.

The 6-9 lefthander will be with his fourth team in as many years, having pitched for the Rays, Dodgers and Marlins lately -- he was actually Florida's Opening Day starter this year, getting pounded for six runs on seven hits in five innings. Hendrickson was 7-8 with a 5.45 ERA for Florida in 2008, faring much better as a reliever (0-1, 3.03 in 17 games) than as a starter (7-7, 6.24 in 19 games). Hendrickson worked exclusively as a starter from the beginning of the season until July 6, but having gone 0-5 with a 9.71 ERA over his final eight starts, was shifted to the bullpen after that.

I'm not sure how the Orioles will use Hendrickson, but it's worth noting that three of the starts druing the stretch that led to his banishemnt from the Marlins rotation came during interleague play, including two in AL parks. It's not like Baltimore has a great rotation or bullpen, but I think it would ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Baltimore Orioles, Florida Marlins

Left-hander Mark Hendrickson signed a one-year contract with the pitching-depleted Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday. Hendrickson pitched in 36 games for the Florida Marlins last season, including 19 starts, and could compete for a spot in Baltimore's thin starting rotation.
Ramirez Could Be Headed Back To The Red Sox

NO! Not that one! The guy on the right!

SI.com reported today that the Florida Marlins’ superstar shortstop Hanley Ramirez was, at some point this winter, sought out by the Redsox front office.

Ramirez would have been a phenomenal re-acquisition for the team as his numbers have steadily increased in power since his '05 debut. Last Season, Ramirez hit 33 home runs and 35 stolen bases, all while batting .301.

Anabel Sanchez along with Hanley Ramirez, and all of his prospective potential, were dealt away to Florida in the Josh Beckett, Mike Lowell deal that hasn’t exactly disappointed anyone in Red Sox Nation.

Though mid-way through 2005, when Beckett struggled for the Sox and Sanchez tossed a no hitter for the Marlins there was, at least, a little grumbling.

The rumors stated that the Red Sox would have likely attempted to move him from short to center and they would have had to sacrifice Jacoby Ellsbury and/or Clay Buchholz in the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Boston Red Sox, Manny Ramirez, Hanley Ramirez, Florida Marlins, Josh Beckett

Nelson, who agreed to terms last week, was 3-1 with one save in 59 appearances for the Florida Marlins last season.
