Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins On Different Pages

It's really hard to argue with the way the Florida Marlins do business.
Despite having a payroll consistently at the bottom of baseball, in the last seven seasons, The Marlins have had five winning seasons and won a World Series.
They have a philosophy of building through the draft, develop their own talent, and once that talent gets to a point where they will make serious money, they trade them for more inexpensive talent.
Throughout the years, we have seen Juan Pierre, Josh Beckett, Miguel Cabrera, Mike Lowell, Derek Lee, AJ Burnett, Brad Penny, and Ryan Dempster all come up with the Marlins and all be shipped away in trades or lost in free agency.
Now, after yesterday's meeting between the Marlins and Josh Johnson's agent Matt Sosnick, it looks like Johnson will be the latest Marlins star to be traded away.
According to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick , Sosnick and the Marlins met yesterday to discuss a long-term contract for Johnson. Let's just say the conversation didn't go so well.

The Mets Should Trade For Josh Johnson

Yesterday, it was reported that Josh Johnson and the Florida Marlins were at an impasse in their contract talks. The Marlins are currently offering Johnson an extension that would buy out just one of his free agent years. The general thought is that Johnson's payday should be nine figures. However, the Marlins, have shown timelessly in the past, that they are against locking up players over the long term. This could make Johnson available via the trade market.

If Johnson is available, the New York Mets should go after him as they can, for several reasons. One, he is very young-25 years old, a pitcher that young, is rarely ever available. Two, Johnson has great stuff, is a workhorse, and could be a Cy Young candidate next year. It might not take that much to pry Johnson from the Marlins. He could be cheaper in terms of prospects than Roy Halladay.
There is one risk with Johnson; early in his career, he had to undergo Tommy John surgery. However, pitchers who undergo Tommy John surgery very early ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Mets, Josh Johnson, Florida Marlins

Contract talks break down between Marlins, Johnson

                    Sporting News staff reports

The agent for Marlins ace Josh Johnson told The Miami Herald that he doesn't expect the righthander to sign a contract extension with the team.
Talks broke down recently, and agent Matt Sosnick doesn't expect them to pick up again. "The Marlins sort of knew it was now or never," he told the newspaper.
As a result, The Miami Herald speculated the Marlins will be forced to trade Johnson after the 2010 season -- if not sooner. Johnson reportedly is asking for a four-year deal similar to the one signed by Royals ace Zack Greinke (four years, $38 million), but the Marlins won't go beyond three years. Johnson has two more years of salary arbitration before he will become a free agent.
Johnson went 15-5 with a 3.23 ERA this season and is 34-16 with a 3.40 ERA in his five-year career.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Florida Marlins, Josh Johnson, Kansas City Royals, Zack Greinke

The agent for Josh Johnson, Matt Sosnick, told ESPN.com on Friday that negotiations between the Marlins and Johnson have reached an "impasse," and the right-hander expects to play under a one-year deal in 2010, instead of reaching a long-term contract, as both sides reportedly desired.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Florida Marlins, Josh Johnson

Nats add three to 40-man roster, but not Wilkie

The Nationals added three minor league pitchers -- right-hander Juan Jaime and left-handers Atahualpa Severino and Aaron Thompson -- to their 40-man roster on Thursday afternoon, in essence protecting them from the Dec. 10 Rule 5 draft. However, right-hander Josh Wilkie, the subject of Tracee's featureThursday, was not added to the roster and his future with the organization is now unclear. The Nationals' 40-man roster is now full, and barring any changes Wilkie will now be subject to the Rule 5 draft, where another team can claim him for $50,000. Jaime, 22, went 5-2 with a 2.10 ERA in 14 appearances (12 starts) split between Class A Vermont and Class A Hagerstown. Severino, 25, went 10-0 with 15 saves and a 2.62 ERA in 44 relief appearances in Class A Potomac and Class AA Harrisburg. Thompson, a 22-year-old acquired in August from the Marlins in the Nick Johnson trade, posted

Impact rookies for next season

The Rising Stars game a couple weeks ago in the Arizona Fall League featured plenty of young talent, but it wasn't the prospect showcase that it could have been. Several of the truly elite players in the AFL this fall didn't play, including Nationals right-hander Stephen Strasburg (out with a mile neck strain), Braves outfielder Jason Heyward (gluteus muscle strain) and Marlins outfielder Mike Stanton (back pain) didn't play. In fact, Heyward and Stanton were sent home in October from the AFL, but it doesn't significantly affect their blue-chip status.

The Boston Red Sox are certainly in for an eventful offseason.

Already there's been the seemingly surprising move of acquiring Jeremy Hermida from the Florida Marlins.

But there are still many decisions to be made regarding players. In this article, I'll breakdown a few of the players rumored to be heading to, or from, the Red Sox.

If you think I've left any player off this list, leave me a comment. This article is in no particular order.
As we await the Riggleman presser...

Well, folks, that right there is what we call a five-blog-post day. To recap the day's news: Jim Riggleman = manager of team Ryan Zimmerman = golden of glove Stephen Strasburg = healthy of neck Here is the dead-tree-edition story, and a reminder that Boz will be chatting Thursday at 11. I'm told the Nationals have a news conference scheduled this afternoon at 2:30 p.m. at Nationals Park to introduce their new/old skipper. I will be in attendance (assuming we're all not under water) and will be updating you here on any developments. Some of you have wondered about Bo Porter, the former Marlins third base coach who, as I reported in the dead-tree edition, was in the running for the Nationals' managing job until this week. He left the Marlins' organization last month and accepted a job yesterday as third base coach for the Diamondbacks. Finally, I would be

Diamondbacks Fill Coaching Vacancies with Familiar Faces

Since the season ended, the Arizona Diamondbacks have been searching for two candidates that would fill the coaching vacancies on the Major League Baseball staff. Diamondbacks manager AJ Hinch suggested he hoped to fill these spots by the first week in November.
While Nov. 11 is not technically the first week of the month it is fairly close. The Diamondbacks announced today that they had filled these positions and agreed to a 2010 contract with bullpen coach Glenn Sherlock who has been a coach with the organization since the inaugural season in 1998.
Both of the candidates chosen have a long history with Hinch and one is a familiar face to Diamondbacks fans. Former Arizona third baseman Matt Williams has been hired to be the first base coach. He will also be responsible for working with the infielders.
Since retiring, Williams has held several positions with the Diamondbacks. He has been a special assistant to CEO/President Derrick Hall carrying out several duties in the community ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Arizona Diamondbacks, Florida Marlins

Free Agent Arbitration Analysis: First Basemen

The discussion of whether offering arbitration to classified free agents moves on to first base, where all four players come out of the National League East. For more of an explanation on the compensation practices for free-agent signings, and what offering arbitration means when it comes to free agents, check out this morning’s post on the catcher market.

   Johnson

  SHOULD OFFER ARBITRATION
Nick Johnson, Marlins (Type B; 2009 salary: $5.5 million): Healthy for the first time since 2006, Johnson showed what he’s capable of with the Nationals and Marlins, posting a .426 on-base percentage and an OPS+ of 122. He’s a perfect No. 2 hitter, and while that might not be prototypical for a first baseman, the Marlins have a not-so-prototypical shortstop in Hanley Ramirez who can benefit greatly from having Johnson constantly on base in front of him. In a free-market sense, he’s 31 years old and I wouldn’t have a problem signing Johnson to a deal on the order of three ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Florida Marlins
