However, Girardi said he doesn't expect a quick decision from Pettitte, though he said he would love to have him back in 2010. It is believed that Pettitte either will re-sign with New York or retire.
As for free agent left fielder Johnny Damon and free agent DH Hideki Matsui, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told the New York Daily News that he will focus on the team's own free agents before any others, but the Yankees have made no decisions yet.

The newspaper did note that the Yankees hope to reduce ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees, Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Brian Cashman

His future in the Bronx is uncertain, given his free-agent status at season's end. But in what may be his final days wearing Yankee pinstripes, Hideki Matsui is hoping to go out with a flourish - along with his first World Series ring.

Umps get it right, Matsui doubled off

The Yankees didn't have many true scoring chances against Phillies ace Cliff Lee in a 6-1 loss, but Jimmy Rollins successfully duped Hideki Matsui on a pop-up - and the umps eventually ruled that the shortstop effectively doubled the runner off first - to preserve a one-run lead in the fifth inning.

Hideki Matsui is a free agent and wants to return, but do the Yankees risk losing more than just a slugger if they do not re-sign him? Is possibly keeping him purely about baseball or is it a decision that strays into the Yankees' global business interests, too?

Hideki Matsui says his "feelings are still with the Yankees" but he doesn't know whether the Bombers will re-sign him. And, Matsui acknowledged, it would be disappointing if he did not play an eighth season in pinstripes.

Brian Cashman has another week of exclusive negotiating rights with the Yankees' trio of Johnny Damon, Andy Pettitte and Hideki Matsui. Whatever decisions Cashman makes, they will be based on 2010, not the title run that is still fresh in everybody's minds.

Fly: No, no Godzilla won't go to Boston

                    Caught on the Fly

Hey, didn't you used to be just begging for more NHL content ?
A Japanese sports Web site, Nikkan Sports, says the Red Sox might pursue Hideki Matsui. The Boston Globe spies, though, say that's highly unlikely . The BoSox would have to deal David Ortiz to even have a good place to put Godzilla.
Hey, Rangers fans (the Texas kind, not the New York kind), things might be looking up for you. Brian Cashman, GM of the World Series Champeen Yankees, says of Texas, "They're a team that has an opportunity to really make some noise as early as 2010."
And from your sports gossip pages: The new love of Jim Nantz's life , 29-year-old Courtney Richards says she "has champagne taste on a beer budget." Something tells Fly that IMG, where Ms. Richards is a vice president, doesn't pay all that bad, but good thing Nantz gets $7 million a year.
