Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain finished the season as relievers, but Brian Cashman believes the two youngsters will enter spring training as starting pitchers. "I look at them as starters that can relieve," Cashman said.

Navigating his scooter as the Yankees celebrated and hundreds of reporters dotted the infield, Harlan Chamberlain caught up with Joba near the makeshift stage and hugged his son. "We just held each other and cried," Harlan said. "It's that wonderful."

Fly: Does Joba have any pull over Pettitte?

Hey, didn't you used to be coach of the Buffalo Bills?
Andy Pettitte's decision on whether to return next season rests with his family, the pitcher says. But that won't keep Joba Chamberlain from trying to influence his teammate and friend. " It's always worth a shot ," Chamberlain told the New York Daily News. "Andy has become one of my best friends, so we pull no punches with each other. I always throw a jab in there every once in a while that I'll keep him young no matter what."
On the N.L. side of New York, weirdness swirls around Jerry Manuel and newly appointed Brooklyn Cyclones manager Wally Backman . See, rumor has it that Backman was angling for Manuel's job back when Manuel was managing the ChiSox. Backman calls that B.S. and says he's just glad the Mets gave him a chance. Backman was pretty much persona non grata in baseball after claims of physical abuse by his first wife, a domestic dispute with his second wife, a DUI conviction and bankruptcy.

Joba: Bring back Pettitte

Joba Chamberlain has one wish for this holiday season: a Yankees 2010 rotation that includes Andy Pettitte.

Chamberlain spoke to a few reporters yesterday at Madison Square Garden, as he attended the New Yorkers For Children’s “Wrap and Rap” event, helping wrap holiday gifts for foster children in the metropolitan area. The topics of conversation were pretty predictable - no, he hasn’t been told whether he’ll be a starter or a reliever yet - but the one subject he seemed most passionate about was Pettitte, who has served as a mentor of sorts for Chamberlain.

“To see what he’s done and the longevity he’s had, he’s a great player and obviously we’d love to have him back,” Chamberlain said. “That’s a decision he’ll have to make with his family and himself.”

Chamberlain has spoken and texted with Pettitte since the season ended, and while he isn’t pressuring the lefty to make a decision, he’s ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Andy Pettitte, Joba Chamberlain, New York Yankees

Joba fine with starting or relieving

While the Yankees have hinted that Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes will be back in the starting rotation next year, nothing is certain.
And Chamberlain remains fine with that.

Joba still not sure what he'll be doing for Yanks next season

                    Sporting News staff reports

Joba Chamberlain tells the Yankees' Web Site he's ready for whatever role the world champs want him to fill -- once they tell him what it is.

GM Brian Cashman said last week that he saw Chamberlain and fellow righty Phil Hughes as starters who are capable of relieving.

"So he didn't really answer the question," Chamberlain tells the site,

Chamberlain was effective when he was moved back to the bullpen late this season. He struggled at times as a starter as he was kept on a strict innings limit and was occasionally given extra days off between starts.

The Yankees are expected to pursue John Lackey in the free-agent market this offseason. That could continue to cloud Chamberlain's future.

Still, Chamberlain tells the site he looks at the shuttling between the 'pen and the rotation as a positive.

"If it does anything, it helps me just to know that I've been put in a lot of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Joba Chamberlain, New York Yankees, Brian Cashman, Philip Hughes, John Lackey
