Joe Girardi will be honored as the March of Dimes Sportsman of the Year in two weeks, joining Sportswoman of the Year Venus Williams at the March of Dimes New York Division's 26th Annual Sports Luncheon on Wednesday, December 2 at the Waldorf Astoria in Manhattan. Each year, March of Dimes honors the outstanding achievements of men and women in the sports industry. Past recipients include Joe Torre, David Stern, Paul Tagliabue, Mickey Mantle, Billie Jean King, Andre Agassi, Arthur Ashe and Patrick Ewing.

Joe Torre's entire coaching staff will be back with the Los Angeles Dodgers next season. Third base coach Larry Bowa, first base coach Mariano Duncan, pitching coach Rick Honeycutt, hitting coach Don Mattingly, bench coach Bob Schaefer, bullpen coach Ken Howell, coach Manny Mota and instructor Jeff Pentland will return in 2010. The Dodgers have won consecutive NL West titles in Torre's two seasons as manager. Both times they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in the NL championship series.

Sporting News staff reports Dodgers manager Joe Torre is talking to the team about extending his contract for at least one more year, according to the Los Angeles Times. The three-year, $13 million deal Torre signed with the Dodgers after managing the Yankees for 12 years will run out after next season, triggering speculation that hitting coach Don Mattingly might assume control. "We were talking about my coaches and I've been thinking about it," Torre told the newspaper. "It's been fun. When I came here, I was curious about how it might go. But the last two years have been invigorating. You see progress and your ego tells you maybe you had something to do with it." Torre, 69, has led the Dodgers to consecutive NL West Division titles and berths in the NLCS. The team's 95 wins last season led the NL and were the most for the franchise since 1985.
