Yankees, Pettitte patient as free agency continues

                     Sporting News staff reports

Yankees manager Joe Giraradi told the New York Daily News that he has spoken with free agent lefthander Andy Pettitte twice since the team's World Series parade.
However, Girardi said he doesn't expect a quick decision from Pettitte, though he said he would love to have him back in 2010. It is believed that Pettitte either will re-sign with New York or retire.
As for free agent left fielder Johnny Damon and free agent DH Hideki Matsui, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told the New York Daily News that he will focus on the team's own free agents before any others, but the Yankees have made no decisions yet.
"We haven't game-planned yet," Cashman told the New York Daily News. "We're going through everything that transpired in the meetings. Once I get some firm numbers, I can go ahead and start putting together some ideas."
The newspaper did note that the Yankees hope to reduce ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees, Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, Brian Cashman

Johnny Damon's future with the Yankees has been a hot topic during the early days of the hot stove season, but the outfielder isn't expecting a resolution to his situation any time soon. "It seems like it's been pretty informal," Damon said.

Free-agent preview: Outfielders, designated hitters

Think of shopping for free-agent outfielders and DHs like this: Matt Holliday and Jason Bay are Nordstrom. Everyone else is Nordstrom Rack. "I think everyone sees there's separation after the first two," Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said.

Holliday and Bay figure to sift through offers for weeks. Everyone else is less likely to be so choosy. No one wants to become this offseason's Bobby Abreu and have to take a last-minute, discount offer. (Even Abreu didn't want a repeat of last offseason. He already re-signed with the Angels.) The Red Sox, Yankees, Cardinals, Giants and Mets are among the big-money clubs with outfield/DH needs.

Johnny Damon, in the final season of his four-year, $52million contract, overcame a miserable division series and helped drive the Yankees to a championship. It was his second World Series ring in six seasons; he won one with the Red Sox in 2004.

Johnny Damon Is No Derek Jeter

There have been many outlandish claims made when comparing the relative merits of baseball players, but to conclude that Johnny Damon is in the same league as Derek Jeter is as graphic an example of specious reasoning as baseball fans have ever heard.
The only way to accept the claim is to facetiously state that they are in the same league because they are both American Leaguers. It Hurts Johnny Damon's Case To give Johnny Damon a long-term contract borders on insanity. Comparing Johnny to Derek Jeter only weakens his position.
Jeter is a more effective offensive player. The second greatest shortstop in baseball history (see Honus Wagner, Pittsburgh Pirates) had a better batting average and a better on base percentage, while Johnny hit more home runs and out-slugged Jeter. Comparing Offensive Production This past season, Derek Jeter batted .334, which was the third best average in the American League, behind Ichiro Suzuki's .352 and Joe Mauer's .365.

Free Agent Arbitration Analysis: Left Fielders

Left field might be the easiest position on the free-agent market when it comes to teams deciding whether to offer arbitration to their Type A and B free agents (there are no Type Bs in left field, actually) and get draft-pick compensation if they leave. There are three classified players at the position, and each figures to see what the market will bear...

Even if he leaves the Yankees, Johnny Damon will always be remembered in New York for his personal double-steal in Game 4 of the World Series.

  SHOULD OFFER ARBITRATION
Jason Bay, Red Sox (Type A; 2009 salary: $7.5 million): Talked about as a "poor man's Matt Holliday" by many observers, Bay is still going to be a very rich man this winter, not that he isn't already. Bay this year joined Jimmie Foxx (1936, 1937) and Carl Yastrzemski (1967, 1969, 1970) as the only Red Sox players ever to hit 30 homers, draw 90 walks and steal 10 bases in a single season. He's also become quite adept at playing the Green Monster. Boston would love to have ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Johnny Damon, Matt Holliday

Brian Cashman has another week of exclusive negotiating rights with the Yankees' trio of Johnny Damon, Andy Pettitte and Hideki Matsui. Whatever decisions Cashman makes, they will be based on 2010, not the title run that is still fresh in everybody's minds.

Do The Yankees Bring Back Damon, Matsui, and Pettitte For 2010?

With free agency looming next week, Yankees General Manager Brian Cashman has a few important decisions to make.
Free agency for all of baseball will not officially start until Friday, Nov. 20, but the Yankees can negotiate exclusively with the players on the roster whose contracts are up.
Specifically, Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui, and Andy Pettitte.
These decisions won't be easy for Cashman, because all three of these players contributed en route to the Yankees winning the 2009 World Series last Wednesday.
Here's the big question: do Damon, Matsui, and Pettitte come back in pinstripes for 2010? Lets analyze each player's situation.

Johnny Damon: .282, 24 home runs, 82 RBI in 2009
Damon left the Red Sox and signed a four year, $52 million dollar deal right around Christmas of 2005 with the Yankees. His press conference was a huge deal because Damon shaved off his beard and cut his hair right before he was introduced to the New York media.
From his first game in New York, Damon ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Hideki Matsui, Andy Pettitte, Johnny Damon
