Jon Heyman: Rookie Ramirez's slam keeps White Sox alive

1. Alexei Ramirez, the White Sox's Cuban import, drew comparisons to Alfonso Soriano this spring for his body type (lean) and his potential (immense). But nobody was envisioning the sort of power he's showing. While Ramirez probably won't win AL Rookie of the Year (that honor should go to the Rays' Evan Longoria), Ramirez has made a major impact on the pennant race and set the rookie record for grand slams. Ramirez swatted his fourth slam Monday night off Tigers reliever Gary Glover, breaking open a tense 2-2 game on the way to an 8-2 victory that sent the Sox to a one-game playoff with the Twins to see who gets to play in the real playoffs. Before Ramirez went up to bat, Sox manager Ozzie Guillen told him, "Be patient.'' So what does he do? He sends the first pitch into the left field bleachers after telling Guillen, "Have confidence in me. I'm going to get these runs home somehow.'' Incidentally, Ramirez hit 17 home runs that were not grand slams. This is a confident kid who suggested his Olympic ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago White Sox, Manny Ramirez, Jon Heyman, Alexei Ramirez, Alfonso Soriano

GM Talks: Williams, Ricciardi, Gillick

According to Jon Heyman, the White Sox are working on an extension for GM Kenny Williams, whose contract is set to expire in 2009. Williams is one of the best GMs in baseball, having most recently acquired Carlos Quentin and Alexei Ramirez, as well as drafting Gordon Beckham, one of the top infield prospects in America.
Blue Jays CEO Paul Godfrey told reporters that J.P. Ricciardi will be back for the 2009 season, but did not hint at whether or not he will be given an extension. If the Blue Jays can boost their infield and give Travis Snider a shot at DH, they could compete for a playoff spot. Expect the Blue Jays to be very aggressive this season in resigning A.J. Burnett, as well as several other players.
According to Jon Heyman, Phillies GM Pat Gillick may not retire after this season after all. While this would not bother many Phillies fans, it would probably bother Ruben Amaro Jr., who has been waiting for this job for a very long time. He could decide to leave and sign up with another ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Toronto Blue Jays, J.P.
Jon Heyman: Another demoralizing loss for Mets

The New York Mets can't possibly match last year's collapse, when their seven-game lead evaporated in the last 17 games. Yet, they still manage to find ways to inflict pain on themselves, not to mention pain on their poor fans.
