Contract talks break down between Marlins, Johnson

                    Sporting News staff reports

The agent for Marlins ace Josh Johnson told The Miami Herald that he doesn't expect the righthander to sign a contract extension with the team.
Talks broke down recently, and agent Matt Sosnick doesn't expect them to pick up again. "The Marlins sort of knew it was now or never," he told the newspaper.
As a result, The Miami Herald speculated the Marlins will be forced to trade Johnson after the 2010 season -- if not sooner. Johnson reportedly is asking for a four-year deal similar to the one signed by Royals ace Zack Greinke (four years, $38 million), but the Marlins won't go beyond three years. Johnson has two more years of salary arbitration before he will become a free agent.
Johnson went 15-5 with a 3.23 ERA this season and is 34-16 with a 3.40 ERA in his five-year career.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Florida Marlins, Josh Johnson, Kansas City Royals, Zack Greinke

Former Spokane Indian Zack Greinke Wins AL Cy Young For 2009

Starting pitcher Zack Greinke of the Kansas City Royals has won the American League Cy Young Award, defeating Felix Hernandez of the Seattle Mariners and Justin Verlander of the Detroit Tigers.
Greinke pitched for the Spokane Indians in 2002 for his first season.
Greinke compiled a record of 16-8, an ERA of 2.16 and a WHIP of 1.073, as opposed the record of Hernandez at 19-5, an ERA of 2.49 and a WHIP of 1.135.
For those who don't know, WHIP is Walks plus Hits in Innings Pitched, which is similar to the ERA but is a more individually based statistic, while the ERA is a mix of individual performance and the performance of the defense.
The edge that Greinke appears to have had is the streak of five shutouts to open the season for the Royals.
I had favored Hernandez because I thought he had been more consistent over the course of the season, and used the compilation of more wins and fewer losses as the tie-breaker, because both the Royals and Mariners gave little run support to either pitcher, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Zack Greinke, Kansas City Royals, Cy Young, Seattle Mariners, Felix Hernandez, Spokane Indians

MLB to award 2012 All-Star Game to Kansas City

                    Sporting News staff reports

Call it a doubleheader sweep for the Royals on Tuesday. First, ace Zack Greinke is named AL Cy Young Award winner. Hours later, it's reported that the 2012 All-Star Game will be played at Kauffman Stadium.

ComcastNet New England, citing a major league source, says that Kansas City has been awarded the game. An official announcement should come no later than next month at the winter meetings, the site reports.

The Royals were competing with the Boston Red Sox for the game. The Sox wanted to mark the 100th anniversary of Fenway Park with the Midsummer Classic. But as Comcast's Sean McAdam puts it, "MLB typically awards the game to cities and host teams with new ballparks or renovated facilities," and Kauffman underwent a major renovation that was completed in 2009.

Kansas City last hosted the All-Star Game in 1973, the year Kauffman Stadium (then known as Royals Stadium) opened.

Should Kansas City Royals Give Serious Consideration to Trading Zack Greinke?

Zack Greinke's win of the 2009 Cy Young Award should be considered one of the best accomplishments in recent baseball history.
The Kansas City Royals weren't a bad team in 2009, they were awful. Greinke's dominance on a 97-loss team speaks to his greatness.
The Royals are in the very competitive but winnable AL Central. Any great team needs an "ace" of the pitching staff to always depend on, but the Royals have almost an entire roster full of holes to fill in order to compete with Minnesota, Detroit, and Chicago.
Kansas City is one of the smallest markets in baseball and must be creative with their money and players in order to compete. Would trading Zack Greinke be the smartest move for the long-term success of the organization?
At first thought, most fans would immediately say absolutely not. It would be a very difficult sell for the organization trading their most marketable star and hope fans would still come out to watch an awful team.
Trading Greinke could be a lethal blow to a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Zack Greinke, Kansas City Royals, Cy Young

Zack Greinke has won the American League Cy Young Award, beating out Felix Hernandez after a spectacular season short on wins but long on domination.

Greinke had a 16-8 record with a 2.16 ERA for the Kansas City Royals. Hernandez went 19-5 with a 2.49 ERA for the Seattle Mariners.

Greinke received 25 first-place votes and three seconds for 134 points in balloting released Tuesday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Hernandez drew two firsts, 23 seconds and one third for 80 points.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Zack Greinke, Cy Young, Kansas City Royals, Felix Hernandez, Seattle Mariners

The Kansas City Royals have agreed to terms with infielder Wilson Betemit, a 28-year-old infielder who spent last season in the Chicago White Sox organization. The Royals signed the switch-hitting Betemit to a minor league contract. He opened last season on the White Sox roster and hit .200 in 20 games, playing first and third base.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals, Wilson Betemit

Report: White Sox Pass On Chone Figgins

Reports from the GM Meetings in Chicago are that the Chicago White Sox will not make a run at utility stud Chone Figgins.
This development is puzzling in light of the Sox nearly annual courting of Figgins in trade rumors. The White Sox also have a need for another outfielder and/or third baseman, both needs Figgins could fill.
The Sox recently traded one potential leadoff candidate, Chris Getz, and Josh Fields to the Kansas City Royals for Mark Teahen. Sox GM Kenny Williams has told the media that Gordon Beckham will move from third base to second to accommodate Teahen as an everyday third baseman.
Figgins was thought to be the logical next step for the Sox, though, who were looking for a table setting player that would either move Teahen to right field, or who could play center, bumping Alex Rios to right field. The Sox declined the option to retain Jermaine Dye in 2010.

Friday's acquisition of Mark Teahen from Kansas City gave the White Sox instant flexibility.
And that flexibility came on the infield, when general manager Ken Williams and his staff decided to put Teahen back at third base.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Mark Teahen, Kansas City Royals, Chicago White Sox, Ken Williams

Trade Analysis: White Sox add Teahen

On Wednesday night, during Game 6 of the World Series, the Daily News’ Bill Madden broke the news of a rare trade between division rivals that became official yesterday, as the Royals sent third baseman Mark Teahen to the White Sox for second baseman Chris Getz and third baseman Josh Fields.

Mark Teahen slides into a better situation in Chicago, where he won't be expected to carry the lineup as he was at times for the Royals.

Teahen looked like he was ready for big things in 2006, when he hit .290 with 18 homers and 69 RBI with a .517 slugging percentage in 439 plate appearances, but has struggled since then, hitting seven, 15 and 12 homers while posting OPS+ figures in the 91-98 range each of the last three seasons.

Where you might have expected a breakout from Teahen after he burst on the scene, he’s instead simply leveled off, with a walk rate that’s slipped a bit each year. He hits lefthanders and righthanders about equally well, which is a good sign, but his plate ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Mark Teahen, Chicago White Sox, Kansas City Royals
