The Phillies rose up repeatedly down the stretch, most notably on the final Saturday of the regular season, when they beat the Nationals to clinch the division title. That victory, sealed with a spectacular double play started by shortstop Jimmy ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox, Ken Rosenthal, New York Mets

Ken Rosenthal Reacts to Thursday's Playoff Action

All smiles for Torre as Dodgers keep rolling

Joe Torre isn't merely getting the last laugh on the Yankees. He's throwing his head back and unleashing a full-blown guffaw.
Actually, Torre isn't saying a word, doesn't have to say a word. His Dodgers' performance in the Division Series speaks volumes.
The Dodgers lead the Cubs, two games to none, and their 10-3 rout on Thursday night was hatched by a hit-and-run that Torre called in the second inning, triggering a five-run rally.
Boy, the Dodgers sure took a chance when they signed Torre to a three-year contract without performance incentives.
Torre, according to the Yankees, needed extra motivation, needed a $1 million bonus for reaching each postseason round.
New York's offer to Torre was for one year with a pay cut from $7.5 million to $5 million. But hey, Torre had the chance to make an additional $3 million if he won the World Series!
The Yankees' offer was an insult.
Rosenthal Reacts to Wednesday's Playoff Action

This BoSox win was for the kids

Forget the Angels. If ever there was a game to make the Yankees cry, this was it.
The Red Sox picked up Wednesday night where they left off in last year's World Series, looking like a powerhouse not only for the present, but also the future.
Jason Bay, acquired in the three-way Manny Ramirez trade, was perhaps the Sox's biggest hero, hitting a go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth inning.
But six farm-system products—six!—made pivotal contributions in the Sox's 4-1 victory over the Angels. Of those, only first baseman Kevin Youkilis possesses more than three years of experience—and the Sensational Six did not even include second baseman Dustin Pedroia, who had a relatively quiet night.
Left-hander Jon Lester, outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury, and closer Jonathan Papelbon played central roles in the Sox's World Series clincher against the Rockies a year ago.
Shortstop Jed Lowrie and reliever Justin Masterson joined them on Wednesday ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Ken Rosenthal

Ken Rosenthal and the Age of Unreason

A couple days ago, I wrote that Ken Rosenthal had earned some mulligans with his excellent piece, handing out the MLB individual awards. I also wrote that this was a good thing because he would use them up soon enough. Well, soon enough apparently means a couple days.
Rosenthal wrote a piece congratulating the Brewers' owner for firing Ned Yost with 12 games to go, crediting the move for propelling Milwaukee into the playoffs. Wow. First, I just want to make a basic observation about Ken's grasp of perspective, logic, and reasoning. He opens by touting Mark Attanasio's (owner of the Brewers) history spent as a senior partner in the money-management firm, Trust Company of the West.
Rosenthal calls it a "world of risk-taking and bold action." He even says Attanasio only saw the upside to the move. He says these things as if they were good. Even if you were living in a cave, you would know from the cacophonous name-calling and finger-pointing coming out of Washington that the U.S. economy is ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Ken Rosenthal, Milwaukee Brewers
