Who will be this offseason's Bobby Abreu?

If this offseason is anything like last offseason -- and it just might be, given the continuing economic problems in the real world -- the free-agent market will take quite awhile to develop. That means plenty of quality players will be available deep into the offseason.
And that isn't a bad thing.
As a last-minute signing, outfielder Bobby Abreu, perhaps motivated by the lack on interest in him, became the best bargain of last year's free-agent class. The Angels snagged him for one year and $5 million. He then proceeded to hit .293 with a .390 on-base percentage, 15 homers, 103 RBIs, 96 runs scored and 20 stolen bases. His impact on his new Angels teammates was profound -- Los Angeles went from one of the least patient teams at the plate to one of the most patient. As a result, the Angels wasted no time re-signing Abreu to a two-year, $19 million deal (with a $9 million option for 2012) this offseason.
Other bargains from last year's free-agent class include first baseman Russell Branyan (one ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Bobby Abreu, Los Angeles Angels, Adrian Beltre, Hank Blalock, Xavier Nady, Brett Myers

Angels will pursue Bay, but not Holliday

                    Sporting News staff reports

Angels owner Arte Moreno told the Los Angeles Times that the team will not pursue free agent outfielder Matt Holliday this offseason. However, Moreno admitted the team has interest in free agent outfielder Jason Bay.
"(Holliday) is not going to be an Angel," Moreno told the newspaper. "We are not looking at Holliday at all."
The newspaper speculated the Angels are shying away from Holliday because he is represented by agent Scott Boras. Boras also represents Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira, who left the Angels in free agency last offseason.
And although he would like to re-sign free agent righthander John Lackey and free agent third baseman Chone Figgins, Moreno admitted it likely will be impossible to afford to bring back both players. Moreno also hinted to the newspaper that free agent DH Vladimir Guerrero will play elsewhere in 2010. "We've talked to his agent just ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Los Angeles Angels, Matt Holliday, Arte Moreno, Jason Bay

Tracy became the second manager to win the award after taking over in midseason, joining Jack McKeon for Florida in 2003. Scioscia also picked up the AL award in 2002.

Tracy received 29 first-place votes and two seconds for 151 points in balloting released Wednesday by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Scioscia got 15 first-place votes.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Jim Tracy, Colorado Rockies, Mike Scioscia, Los Angeles Angels, Florida Marlins

Nationals prepared to make a play for Lackey

                    Sporting News staff reports

Add the Washington Nationals to the list of teams interested in signing right-hander John Lackey as a free agent.

The team's Web site reports the Nats want Lackey to be their ace and to mentor the club's young starters, such as left-handers John Lannan and Ross Detwiler and right-hander Stephen Strasburg.

Washington will face stiff competition for Lackey. The Angels would like to re-sign him, and high-profile teams such as the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and New York Mets, among others, are expected to make offers. Teams other than the Angels can discuss financial terms with Lackey's agent beginning Friday.
Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said during the season that he would look to acquire a veteran starter this winter, and he laid out what he's looking for in a staff leader.

"We have to have a special type of veteran pitcher, who is willing to give of himself as a teacher and mentor ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Washington Nationals, John Lackey, Los Angeles Angels

Angels focused on their own free agents, not Holliday

                    Sporting News staff reports

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, Angels general manager Tony Reagins shot down a FOX Sports report that linked the Angels to free agent left fielder Matt Holliday.
"He's a talented player, but our focus is not on him right now," Reagins told the newspaper.
Instead, the team will try to re-sign righthander John Lackey and third baseman Chone Figgins, though neither free agent is expected to re-up before the start of free agency Friday. Reagins also said he has been in discussions with the agents for the Angels' other prominent free agents, DH Vladimir Guerrero and reliever Darren Oliver.
However, Reagins wouldn't comment on trade rumors that have linked the team to White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko or Tigers center fielder Curtis Granderson.
"There are so many different rumors out there, it wouldn't be smart to comment on them," Reagins told the Los Angeles Times. "A lot of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Los Angeles Angels, Matt Holliday, St. Louis Cardinals, Tony Reagins, Fox Sports

Scioscia guarantees Angels will beat Yankees next season

How's this for a guarantee?
Angels manager Mike Scioscia, speaking to some of Orange County's movers and shakers at a fundraiser lunch, regaled his audience with baseball stories from his playing career. But the thrust of his remarks changed quickly when someone in the crowd asked him if he thought the Yankees could buy another championship next season.
Here's what Scioscia said, courtesy of the Orange County Register: "I don't care if the Yankees go out and spend $350 million next year, we're going to beat them because we have the team."
Scioscia's Angels lost to the Yankees in six games in this year's AL Championship Series.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels, Mike Scioscia

Teams already lining up to negotiate with Lackey

Teams already are lining up to talk with the agent of Angels righthander John Lackey, according to MLB.com.
Lackey, 31, already has been identified as the top pitcher in this year's free-agent market and interest seems to be getting hotter leading up to Friday—the day the Angels lose exclusive negotiating rights and the dollar figures really start to grow.
According to MLB.com, the Red Sox, Mets and Brewers already have had preliminary discussions with agent Steve Hilliard, and the Yankees almost assuredly will join the discussion at some point. Sources in Seattle have identified the Mariners as an interested party as well.
The Mets and Red Sox are said to be compiling "due diligence" reports on Lackey's health after consecutive seasons in which he made only 24 and 27 starts. He was sidelined in both seasons by various arm injuries.
The Red Sox are expected to become a very ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, John Lackey, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets

Cubs, Angels, Yankees among teams interested in Tigers CF Granderson

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs plan to make an aggressive push to acquire Tigers center fielder Curtis Granderson if Detroit makes him available in a trade. The newspaper reported the Angels and Yankees also are believed to be very interested in trading for Granderson, who is a Chicago native.
Any deal for the center fielder likely would have to be loaded with top-notch prospects and might not happen until the winter meetings (Dec. 7-10). Newsday speculated Granderson would move from center field to left with the Angels, who would keep Torii Hunter in center.
Granderson hit only .249 this season, but he had a career-high 30 homers.

In other Tigers news, the team will not try to re-sign free agent first baseman/DH Aubrey Huff or free-agent left-hander Jarrod Washburn, according to MLive.com.Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski told the Web site that he spoke with both players recently, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Curtis Granderson, Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels, Chicago Cubs, New York Yankees

Lackey might be out of Brewers' price range

                    Sporting News staff reports

After finishing the 2009 season with an MLB-worst 5.37 rotation ERA, the Brewers are in the market for starting pitching. However, general manager Doug Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the team might not be able to afford free agent righthander John Lackey.
Lackey is considered the top available starting pitcher on the market, but he is rumored to be seeking a deal comparable to the five-year, $82.5 million contract the Yankees gave A.J. Burnett last offseason.
Melvin acknowledged he spoke with the agent for free agent starters Randy Wolf and Doug Davis at this week's general manager meetings in Chicago. The newspaper also listed free agent starters Jon Garland, Jarrod Washburn, Jason Marquis and Mark Mulder as possible fits for Milwaukee.
As for the trade market, Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel it hasn't developed yet. "It's still real early," Melvin said. "Not a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, John Lackey, Los Angeles Angels, Doug Melvin, New York Yankees
