Halladay trade market could be heating up

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to the Cubs' website, the team has spoken to the Blue Jays about the possibility of trading for ace Roy Halladay.
However, the website is quick to point out that Halladay might not fit into Chicago's payroll and overall plans. Halladay will earn $15.75 million in 2010 and also will cost any team trading for him a valuable bundle of prospects. According to the Cubs' website, the team is reluctant to part with shortstop prospect Starlin Castro.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers and Blue Jays also have had discussions about Halladay, according to a Yahoo! Sports report.
Finally, the New York Post reports the Yankees will monitor the Halladay situation. They have the prospects and young major league talent to interest Toronto, and they also have the money to sign Halladay to a contract extension. The same is true of the A.L. East-rival Red Sox.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees

Lett, Radison join Nationals' coaching staff

The Nationals have announced that Jim Lett and Dan Radison have been added to their 2010 coaching staff as bullpen and first-base coach, respectively. The team also made official the hiring of former Seattle Mariners manager John McLaren as bench coach, and that Pat Listach (third base), Rick Eckstein (hitting) and Steve McCatty (pitching) are all returning. Lett, 58, has 15 years of big league coaching experience, including stints as a bench coach in Toronto, Cincinnati, Los Angeles (Dodgers) and Pittsburgh. As bullpen coach for the Dodgers from 2001-04, he worked alongside current Nationals Manager Jim Riggleman, who was Jim Tracy's bench coach at the time. Most recently, Lett worked as a coach in the Milwaukee Brewers' farm system. Radison, 59, was a coach during both of Riggleman's previous full-time managing jobs -- with the San Diego Padres and Chicago Cubs. He has also worked in the Yankees, Cardinals and

Selig: Dodgers are in good hands

                    Sporting News staff reports

Speaking in Chicago at the MLB owners meetings, commissioner Bud Selig told the Los Angeles Times that the Dodgers "are in good hands."
Because of the pending divorce between team owners Frank McCourt and Jamie McCourt, there is speculation about the future of the franchise. A similar situation occurred with the San Diego Padres recently, when owners John Moores and Becky Moores divorced. The team eventually was sold, though it stayed in San Diego.
"There's no reason to get into any debate about what's going to happen," Selig told the newspaper. "The Dodgers will be in Los Angeles for as long as we're alive and for many generations to come."
The newspaper reported the divorce proceedings aren't expected to affect the Dodgers' offseason spending, as the team wasn't expected to raise its payroll anyway.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres, Bud Selig, Jamie McCourt

Several clubs expressing interest in John Smoltz

                    Sporting News staff reports

John Smoltz apparently won't lack for options this offseason.
FoxSports.com reports the 42-year-old right-hander has drawn interest from at least seven clubs, including the St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and Seattle Mariners. Other potential suitors include the Houston Astros, Texas Rangers and Baltimore Orioles.

Smoltz finished this past season with the Cardinals, going 1-3 with a 4.26 ERA as the club's fifth starter. He began the year with the Boston Red Sox but was released after posting an 8.32 ERA in eight starts.

Fox speculates that Smoltz would prefer to remain in the National League, where has played all but four months of his 22-year major league career. The site also reports that Smoltz is open to being a starter or a reliever and says that "some teams have inquired about him as a closer."

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, John Smoltz, St. Louis Cardinals, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Houston Astros

Can Dodgers' road get any lower?

Readers continue to weigh in on the McCourts.
                         >

Mark Cuban says he wants to buy the Dodgers but, oh yeah, they're not for sale. Jamie McCourt, the "baseball girl," has her own plan to buy the team -- good news for Little League presidents throughout the city. The mediocre left fielder announces that he will indeed come back to suck up $20 million of the payroll, thus insuring that Juan Pierre and his exciting brand of ball will stay on the bench. It's the third day of the general managers' meeting, and not a word of activity from Ned Colletti.

The Dodgers Would Be Foolish to Give Up on Chad Billingsley

The most valuable asset in baseball is good pitching. Good, young, controllable pitching could be likened to winning the lottery for a million dollars, and when you go to cash in your ticket, you find out you actually won five million.
To call the 2009 season a roller coaster for Chad Billingsley would be an understatement. He was named to his first All-Star game in July, but he also had his career-worst year statistically.
Things took an even worse turn for Billingsley when Dodgers manager Joe Torre only used him once in the team's two playoff series. He didn't make an appearance against the Cardinals and pitched once out of the bullpen against the Phillies.
This was coming off a drubbing the Phillies gave him in the 2008 playoffs. In two starts, he lasted only five innings while giving up 11 runs on seven walks and 12 hits.
Several reports are now surfacing that Billingsley is on the trading block. It's rumored he could be the centerpiece of a trade with the Blue Jays that would bring Roy ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chad Billingsley, Roy Halladay

The five teams that will shape MLB free agency

A week from today, MLB free agency officially will open. At that point, teams will be free to talk money with not only their own free agents but all free agents. This isn't a great free-agent class, but there are several impact players who will have the big-market franchises throwing plenty of money their way.
For once, all eyes won't be on the Yankees. Sure, they have decisions to make on Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui and Andy Pettitte, among others, but they don't have to spend nearly a half a billion dollars this offseason. Instead, these teams will be the ones that will shape the market:

Matt Holliday likely will be pursued by the Mets, Red Sox and others.
Mets. After a disastrous fourth-place finish that coincided with their crosstown rivals winning their 27th World Series, the Mets need an overhaul. Injuries played a big part in their 2009 struggles, but this team can't afford to go into the season with Daniel Murphy at first base, Luis Castillo at second base and some revolving ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Matt Holliday, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers

Some Background On John Wetteland

Some months ago, I found some old news articles on John Wetteland's playing days and assembled them into a post on his personality during his teens, as well as his time with the Dodgers and Yankees, in 1989 and 1990, then again in 1995.
Today's news about him calls for a need to understand something about his past and how it relates to his hospitalization in Texas.
In 1995, a New York Times profile of him explained that he'd been born in San Mateo, California in 1966, and father Ed Wetteland had pitched in the minors for the Chicago Cubs, then became a San Francisco musician.
Along with obviously following in his father's footsteps as a pitcher, Wetteland's a devoted guitar player. Ed and Wetteland's mother divorced when Wetteland was 16. Wetteland told the Times :
"I guess I haven't [adjusted to the divorce and his dad remarrying]. But it's not like I can't stand him or anything. My dad and I have a good relationship. We had to live with it."
The Times reported:

After spending the last couple of weeks choking on the McCourt divorce numbers -- $6,000 a year for birthday parties? -- Dodgers fans can finally relax.

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban, who lost in a bid to purchase to the Chicago Cubs, apparently still has some interest in owning a Major League Baseball team.

Amid several reports that he'd be interested in buying the Los Angeles Dodgers, who are not for sale, Cuban says "if it's a perfect deal" he's interested.

The messy divorce of Dodgers owner Frank McCourt and his wife, Jamie, raises questions about the team's future.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago Cubs

Fly: Is Mark Cuban interested in buying Dodgers?

Hey, didn't you used to be that unbelievably good team in Denver?
Mark Cuban is in the news regarding owning a baseball team again. This time it's the Dodgers , not the Cubs. As the Frank and Jamie McCourt divorce continues to affect the future of L.A.'s NL team, Cuban says he has heard from Dodgers fans pleading with him to buy their team. "More than I can count," he says. However, he tells the Dallas Morning News that he has no interest in buying the Dodgers .
In the baseball GM meetings, the Cubs' Jim Hendry is workin' the crowd for interest in Milton Bradley. Spies in Chitown say the Rangers appear to be most interested but would want the Cubs to swallow most of Milt's money.
Uniform update: Looks like Nike is taking its funky uniforms outside the state of Oregon. TCU's Horned Frogs will be suiting up in their "Nike Pro Combat" apparel this weekend against Utah. Check out those sorta snakeskin pants ... er, frogskin, I guess?
Jay Feely's Twitter profile says, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Los Angeles Dodgers, Jamie McCourt

MLB's Top 15 Catchers of the 2000s

With the World Series over, so is this decade of baseball, so what better time to look back at the top players of the great decade that was the 2000s.

This will be the first in a series running down the top 15 players at each position in the last decade.

The only stipulation is that players must have played in at least five seasons during the decade, so sorry Dodgers fans but no Russell Martin.

I hope this can spark some debate, as these players and their achievements should be fresh in everyone's minds. So without further ado we will start with number 15...
