If you’ve never been to the Baseball Hall of Fame, now is the perfect time. That’s because the Hall has added artifacts from the Yankees’ World Series win to its “Autumn Glory” exhibit in Cooperstown. Among the items donated by the Yankees: * Hideki Matsui’s Game 6 bat, when the World Series MVP drove in a Fall Classic record-tying six runs. * Mariano Rivera’s postseason cap, when Rivera saved five of the Yankees’ 11 wins and posted a 0.56 ERA. * Derek Jeter’s Game 6 bat; Jeter hit .407 in the World Series with five runs scored. * Andy Pettitte’s World Series cap; Pettitte was 2-0 in the World Series, 4-0 in the 2009 postseason and was the winning pitcher in all three of the Yankees’ series-clinching victories. * Johnny Damon’s spikes from his Game 4 double steal; Damon hit .364 in the World Series with six runs scored. * Jorge Posada’s catcher’s mask from the postseason; Posada drove in five runs in ...

Last week, Rob Neyer challenged someone to find out just how many championships Mariano Rivera has been worth. I was tempted to go ahead and figure it out, but I didn't really have the time or idea on how do it. Rebecca, over at This Purist Bleeds Pinstripes, decided to go ahead and take that challenge from Neyer . It may be over 4,000 words, but it is definitely worth a read. Rebecca concludes: When we total up the CONVERTED PREWAR numbers, we get 24.016. That would be, then, 24 wins. Now, let’s go back and remember our very basic assumption, that it takes eleven wins to win a Championship. Twenty four divided by 11 is, of course, just over two. This means, adjusted to a regular-season scale, the Yankees have won two of their last five World Series, potentially for no other reason than that Mariano Rivera, and not another closer, was on the mound in the ninth inning.
