Miguel Cabrera on the block, Mets look at Branyan

A couple of items for your perusal. With talks between the Mariners and Tigers on the Curtis Granderson/Edwin Jackson front said to be stalled and a deal "pretty doubtful" (according to ESPN's Jerry Crasnick's sources), a new Tigers name is now said to be on the trading block: Miguel Cabrera, he of the one MVP vote that didn't go to Joe Mauer. (FYI, Albert Pujols WAS unanimous for National League MVP today, and rightly so).

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Miguel Cabrera, Seattle Mariners, Curtis Granderson, Edwin Jackson, ESPN, Jerry Crasnick

Cabrera joins Jackson, Granderson in Tigers' trade rumors

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Detroit News speculated that trade offers for Tigers center fielder Curtis Granderson and Tigers righthander Edwin Jackson have underwhelmed thus far.
That belief is based on Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski's reputation as a quick dealer. If he had received a deal to his liking, Dombrowski likely would have made a move already.
And the situation surrounding Tigers first baseman Miguel Cabrera apparently is similar.
Rumors have the Red Sox among the teams interested in Cabrera, though Dombrowski declined to admit whether he has had any trade discussions about Cabrera. Detroit, looking to shed payroll, owes Cabrera $126 million over the next six seasons. The newspaper listed Red Sox righthander Clay Buchholz as the anchor of any Cabrera deal between the teams.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Detroit Tigers, Curtis Granderson, Edwin Jackson, Miguel Cabrera, Boston Red Sox

Mauer a worthy MVP, but deserved more

No catcher ever has won the Most Valuable Player Award unanimously, an honor Joe Mauer of Minnesota somehow was deprived of in the 2009 voting announced Monday by the Baseball Writers Association of America. Only one vote stood between Mauer and his rightful claim to history: a first-place vote for Miguel Cabrera, a powerful hitter, but a guy who played first base for a second-place Detroit team that coughed up a division title by finishing 1-4 while Cabrera went 3-for-20 and, on the last weekend of the season, was drunk and involved in a domestic violence episode. The vote was cast by Keizo Konishi of Kyodo News and the Seattle chapter of the BBWAA.

Mauer beats Teixeira, Jeter for AL MVP

As expected, Joe Mauer captured AL MVP honors today in a lopsided vote, collecting 27 of the 28 first-place votes. I thought it would be unanimous, but one voter decided Mauer was worthy of a second-place vote. His first place vote went to … Mark Teixeira? Derek Jeter? No. It went to Miguel Cabrera.

Miguel Cabrera? The Tigers slugger had a solid season, but after hitting .345 through August 25, he batted .259 over the final 38 games of the season as the Tigers watched their commanding lead over Mauer’s Twins fall apart. Throw in the fact that he was arrested in a domestic violence incident during the final weekend of the season - again, while his team was coughing up its playoff spot - should have been enough to knock him down a spot or two on the ballot.

Keizo Konishi, a reporter for Kyodo News in Seattle, voted Cabrera first and Mauer second. Perhaps we’ll find out what made him vote that way, perhaps we won’t. Either way, it’s a strange, strange vote.

Should the Detroit Tigers Trade Miguel Cabrera?

The Detroit Tigers are coming off of a heart-breaking finish to their 2009 season. After squandering away the division lead to the Minnesota Twins, they lost a one-game playoff to them and missed the playoffs entirely.
The Tigers now seem focused on shredding payroll heading into the 2010 season. Edwin Jackson and Curtis Granderson have both been mentioned as possibly being on the move to lower a payroll that already sits at well over $100 million between just 10 players.
Ken Rosenthal speculates in a recent column that if the Tigers are willing to dangle Jackson and Granderson, they should look at moving Miguel Cabrera as an alternative. Cabrera, the highest-paid Tiger, still has six years and $126 million remaining on his current deal.
Rosenthal suggests that if the Red Sox were willing to offer Mark Teixeira an eight-year, $170 million contract last year, they should be able to take on Cabrera's deal with ease. He even offers up a proposed trade between the two teams: Jonathan Papelbon, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Detroit Tigers, Miguel Cabrera, Curtis Granderson
