Are the Boston Red Sox Killing the Cubs' Ability to Move Milton Bradley?

One of the hottest rumors flying around Thursday at baseball's Winter Meetings is that the Boston Red Sox have agreed to trade third baseman Mike Lowell to the Texas Rangers for minor league catcher Max Ramirez.
Lowell, who has dealt with numerous injuries over the past few seasons, is set to make $12 million in 2010, while Ramirez's salary is substantially less; Ramirez made $402,000 last year.
Sports Illustrated's Jon Heyman first reported that part of the transaction will be Boston sending between $8-$9 million to Texas to cover a large portion of Lowell's contract.
Which brings us to the other big name flying around Indianapolis this week—Milton Bradley.
The Chicago Cubs have been doing everything possible to rid themselves of Bradley and the $21 million he's due over the next two seasons. They haven't been able to get a deal done, though, despite various rumors that there are interested teams.
Cubs chairman Crane Kenney told Chicago media on Wednesday that the Cubs have no plans to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Milton Bradley, Boston Red Sox, Mike Lowell, Jim Hendry

Mike Lowell for Max Ramirez: WHO!?

Mike Lowell, who was the 2007 World Series MVP, is reportedly being dealt over to the Texas Rangers along with $9 million of his remaining salary for catcher/first baseman Max Ramirez.
FOXSports.com first broke the news late Wednesday night about the trade. However, Gordon Edes of ESPN Boston reported that the deal isn't done yet after he contacted Rangers GM John Daniels.
Ramirez, 25, has only played in 17 Major League games, all in 2008. He didn't play in 2009 at the Major League level, but at two minor league levels. His combined stats aren't that impressive.
He batted a combined .230 with five home runs, 45 runs batted in, 15 doubles, 36 walks, and struck out 93 times in only 80 games.
Now the question is why? Why trade Lowell and eat up most of his contract for this guy?
The trade shouldn't be a complete surprise, but this is far from over. Moving Lowell means something else has to go down.
Scott Boras suggested yesterday that the Red Sox trade Lowell and sign Adrian Beltre. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Mike Lowell, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, ESPN

The Boston Red Sox are discussing a trade that would send 2007 World Series MVP Mike Lowell to the Texas Rangers. The 35-year-old was an All-Star four times from 2002-07, hitting .324 with 21 homers and 120 RBIs in 2007.
Sox Reportedly Acquire Max To Use Up Old Manny Jerseys

In a move clearly designed to use up old inventory from the Red Sox Souvenir Shop, the Boston Red Sox have reportedly acquired minor league catcher Max Ramirez from the Texas Rangers in exchange for gold-glove third baseman Mike Lowell.
Said GM Theo Epstein, "When we were forced to trade Manny Ramirez two seasons ago it left us with a surplus of Ramirez jerseys at our souvenir store. As a small market team, we simply can't afford to be holding a surplus of inventory."
Since the departure of Manny, the Sox GM has traded for Ramon Ramirez last season, while snatching Ramon A. Ramirez off of waivers earlier this off-season. The reported acquisition of Max Ramirez from the Rangers would leave the Red Sox 40-man roster with no fewer than three Ramirezes.
Added Epstein, "We had a lot of shirts. Maybe the Yankees can afford to fill their roster with Grandersons, Teixeira and Sabathias, but we need to shop a bit smarter. When an opportunity comes along to use up old inventory, we need to take ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Boston Red Sox, Theo Epstein, Mike Lowell, Manny Ramirez, Texas Rangers

Red Sox agree to deal Lowell to Rangers, pick up salary

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Red Sox are paying to make Mike Lowell go away.

FOXSports.com reports Boston has agreed to trade Lowell to the Texas Rangers for catcher Max Ramirez, and will eat most of the third baseman's $12 million salary for 2010 to make it happen.
Lowell, 35, is entering the final year of his contract. He has been slowed by hip and other injuries in recent seasons. He still was productive when he played -- 17 home runs, 75 RBIs and a .337 on-base percentage in 119 games.
Those injuries, in fact, may prevent a deal from being finalized, a source tells FOXSports.com.

Texas reportedly would use Lowell as a backup corner infielder and part-time DH.

The move allows Boston to step up its pursuit of free-agent third baseman Adrian Beltre.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Mike Lowell, Adrian Beltre

Why the Boston Red Sox Should Pursue Adrian Beltre

It's the old adage in sports; defense wins championships. It's been proven true in football and basketball, but in baseball? For the Boston Red Sox, check yes.
Since 2004, the Red Sox have made the playoffs five times, the ALCS three times and won the World Series twice. People keep a lot of statistics in baseball, but only one directly relates to the Red Sox recent up-and-down performance—defensive efficiency.
Baseball Prospectus calculates a team's defensive efficiency rating, which is the rate at which balls put into play are converted into outs. The Red Sox have ranked in the top 15 in Major League Baseball three times (the three ALCS trips) and in the bottom 10 the other three years. The last team to win the World Series outside of the top 15 was the 2003 Florida Marlins.
This season, the Red Sox finished with their worst rating (.679) since 1997 and it's obvious why. They aged quickly at both catcher and third base, while their carousel at shortstop produced mixed results. At the trade ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Boston Red Sox, Adrian Beltre, Mike Lowell
