Yankee staff members have heard Mike Mussina say he is retiring. However, Mussina hasn't officially announced this past season - when he won 20 games for the first time in a borderline Hall of Fame career - was his last.
Please, Stop the Two-Strike Clap!

Exactly 33 years ago, in 1975, the two-strike clap originated. In Dave Buscema's Game of My Life , Ron Guidry explains. "After a while I caught on because it was with two strikes. I mean, I got strike one, nobody said anything. All of a sudden, strike two, people are clapping all of a sudden and clapped when I went into my delivery."
So that is when it originated.
1975. It started in the great Cathedral: Yankee Stadium. And who am I to diss something that originated in the most memorable stadium for any sport? Reading this, you'd think I am. Trust me, I wouldn't cross the line that far.
But it seems every time a pitcher gets two quick strikes and there are two outs, fans go crazy. And every time it's 0-2, a pitcher usually throws a ball. It dissappoints fans and squeezes the life out of them.
It comes back to football. When a road team is forced to a third down, the fans usually get on their feet and start clapping.
Whether the team converts or not, it builds unneeded pressure on the home ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Adam Jones, Mike Mussina

Moose Finally Gets No. 20; Becomes Oldest Pitcher to Get 20th Win

Mike Mussina has come close to many milestones in his career. He almost pitched a perfect game (four times), twice he almost won a World Series with the Yankees, and he almost had 20 wins twice. After a disappointing 2007, at 38 no one expected Mussina to have a stand-out 2008, but that is exactly what he did.
In 2008, Mike Mussina changed the way he pitched. He proved that at 39 you can in fact teach an old dog new tricks. Last year he posted an 11-10 record with a 5.15 ERA, and going into yesterday's game he had a record of 19-9 with a 4.32 ERA.
Mussina took the hill for the final time Sunday afternoon after the Yankees had been eliminated from the post-season earlier in the week. He had a chance to get his 20th win for just the first time in his career. There he stood, a pitcher with so much success and so many "almosts" looking to grab something else that had eluded him his entire career.
Just like he'd done for the entire season, the Moose made the pitches he needed to and kept the Yankees ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Mike Mussina, New York Yankees

Mike Mussina: Do 20 Wins Make Him a Lock For The Hall?

One of the long standing knocks on Mike Mussina's resume has been the absence of a 20 win season. Not that he hasn't had good seasons. He won 19 twice and 18 three times. Before his 20th win, he was the only pitcher with 250 wins to have never won 20 in a single season.
Mussina does not need to worry about that anymore though.
He has added that elusive 20-win season to his resume, but does that mean that he is ready for the Hall?
Even if he retired after this year, he would still not be a lock. A Hall of Famer is defined by their dominance during the period of time playing, and the longevity of it throughout their career. That is why the absence of the 20 win milestone always hurt his Hall of Fame stature.
Proof of his lack of dominance lies with the fact that he has never won a Cy Young Award, and only once finished as runner-up. This comes down to Mussina never being "the best pitcher" in his respective league.
Additionally, Mussina has ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Mike Mussina

Moose finally hits the 20-win mark

Congratulations to Mike Mussina, who finally won 20 games for the first time. It’s hard to believe this was the same pitcher fighting for a spot this spring in the starting rotation.

Of course, Moose did get an assist from another veteran, Mariano Rivera, and a little “help” from Jonathan Papelbon as well in the ninth. How about that Papelbum hissy fit? Wouldn’t it be really sad if he, say, broke a toe with all that kicking and stomping he did in the dugout after giving up three runs? Sheesh.

But even though it was Yankees-Red Sox, I have to admit that I had the Mets on the picture-in-picture thingy, and flipped back and forth between both games. It wasn’t enough seeing Carlos Beltran and Carlos Delgado in that Puerto Rico tourism commercial that runs every five minutes on Yankee games - I had to see the Mets play. So sue me.

Squawker Jon, I did feel bad for you, having your team collapse for the second year in a row. And this is the first time in ages neither ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Mike Mussina, New York Mets

Moose's hunt for 20 finally over

The whole thing worked out perfectly.

Mariano Rivera, the closer who blew Game 7 of what would have been Mike Mussina’s only World Series title was on the mound at Fenway Park, the same one where Mussina had lost a perfect game with two outs in the ninth.

The game was being played 12 years to the day since Armando Benitez blew a save in what would have been Mussina’s 20th win, and Mussina hadn’t had a chance to win 20 since that day.

But on this day, Rivera closed out the game in typical fashion, the Fenway faithful didn’t get to celebrate and nothing would stop Mussina from joining the 20-win club, one he had come tantalizingly close to joining a few other times.

“I’ve been playing baseball a long time and I’ve accomplished some things,” Mussina said. “On the last day of the season in a split doubleheader in Boston, in the rain - and it rains every day I pitch, anyway - it was kind of perfect. The story all fit together nicely to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Mike Mussina

Mike Mussina Wins 20: Yankees Beat Red Sox in First of Twin Bill

The New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox by a score of 6-2 on Sunday afternoon in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.
Mike Mussina took the ball for the Yankees. He worked six strong innings, gave up no runs on three hits, walked two, and struck out three.
Mussina was opposed by Daisuke Matsuzaka. Matsuzaka lasted four innings, gave up three earned runs on four hits, walked two, and knocked down five.
The Yankees put up three runs in the top of the fourth. Xavier Nady wrapped a homer around the Pesky Pole in right field—his 25th homer of the year—to give the Yankees a 3-0 lead.
Boston finally broke through in the bottom of the eighth with two runs and RBI from Chris Carter and Jacoby Ellsbury. The Sox then trailed 3-2.
The Yanks added insurance in the top half of the ninth. Jose Molina hit a sacrifice fly to score Robinson Cano; Melky Cabrera grounded out, allowing Cody Ransom to score; Alex Rodriguez singled to score Brett Gardner; and the Yankees went up ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Mike Mussina, Boston Red Sox, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Mariano Rivera

Will Mike Mussina win No. 20 today?

Big baseball day, with the Yankees-Red Sox doubleheader and the Mets’ final game of the season - and the last game at Shea.

Hey, Squawker Jon, why are the Mets doing their farewell to Shea ceremony after today’s game, and not before? Isn’t that fraught with peril? What if the Mets lose to Florida, like they did last year, and have that ceremony afterwards? That won’t exactly be a happy occasion, will it? Imagine the boos!

Speaking of boos, I wonder if the Met “fans” who booed Johan Santana on Opening Day have rethought their assessment of the pitcher. Sheesh.

One pitcher Yankee fans have reassessed this year is Mike Mussina. Who could have predicted after last year, when he got knocked out of the rotation, that he would be going for 20 games this season? And I hope he gets it, for the first time ever. I’ve really been liking Moose this year. It’s not just that he’s been pitching so well - it’s that he’s kept the dopey comments ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Mike Mussina, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Shea Stadium
