Come To Think Of It: Cubs To Sign Mike Cameron As Soon As Bradley Deal Is Done

According to Will Carroll from Baseball Prospectus, the Cubs will sign free agent Mike Cameron to play center field as soon as Milton Bradley is moved. Carroll tweets that the Bradley deal has been "imminent for 72 hours."
Cameron will turn 37 in January but is still an above average defender, at least according to a UZR/150 of 10.3, despite a weak arm. He should be a huge improvement over Kosuke Fukudome, who can move back to right field.
Offensively, he has power but has a mediocre career .250/.340/.448 slash line. He hit 24 home runs in 2009. Bill James predicts a .237/.328/.428 slash for Cameron in 2010.
The Brewers didn't offer Cameron arbitration, so the Cubs will not lose a draft pick for signing the veteran. But since he made $10 million in 2009, it will likely take at least that much per season to sign him.
The deal hinges on the trade of Bradley for two reasons. One, they need to free up salary, though they will likely need to either pay some of his salary or accept a contract ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Milton Bradley, Mike Cameron

Center fielder Mike Cameron could take center stage for the Cubs by the
time the winter meetings begin Monday in Indianapolis, depending on how

Trade Analysis: Miles & Fox to the A's

Aaron Miles is the biggest name in a five-player trade, but not necessarily the one who will have the most impact.

The best-known name in yesterday’s trade between the A’s and Cubs was Aaron Miles, the 32-year-old second baseman who hit .185 in 74 games for Chicago this year as he battled shoulder and elbow problems.

I supported the Cubs’ signing of Miles last year as part of a plan to sign Milton Bradley and trade Mark DeRosa. And while both Miles and Bradley had disastrous seasons at Wrigley Field, the DeRosa trade could still pay dividends, as lefthander John Gaub had 80 strikeouts in 60 innings between Double-A and Triple-A this year, and 21-year-old righthander Chris Archer went 6-4 with a 2.81 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 109 innings for Single-A Peoria.

But as things work out, Miles winds up as a backup middle infielder in Oakland in a salary dump, with the Cubs paying $1 million of his $2.7 million salary for 2010, and also sending Jake Fox to Oakland.

Fox is ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, Aaron Miles, Milton Bradley, Mark DeRosa, Jake Fox

The New York Post reports that there's a "strong possibility" that Pat Burrell of the Rays and Milton Bradley of the Cubs will be swapped for each other in what would be a trade of big 2009 free-agent signings that didn't work out as well as expected for their clubs.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milton Bradley, Pat Burrell, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs

North Side November: Where Are the Chicago Cubs?

All is quiet on the northern front in Chicago baseball so far this winter.
Which is odd, because Jim Hendry's last few winters have been highlighted by more big game hunting than a weekend with Ted Nugent.
When a guy's resume includes bringing in names like Alfonso Soriano, Ted Lilly, Kosuke Fukudome and Milton Bradley, and when you consider how public Hendry's courtship of each player was, the fact that there hasn't been much of a peep from Hendry so far in November is intriguing to say the least.
Yes, he traded Aaron Heilman to Arizona. And yes, he signed John Grabow to a two-year extension.
But next to throwing around the salaries he's given Bradley, Fukudome and Soriano, these moves amount to about the same impact as breaking wind under water.
There have been reports that the Blue Jays contacted the Cubs to gauge interest in Roy Halladay.
Silence.
There have been rumors that Bradley's going to be traded to New York, Tampa, Texas, Japan and an asylum.
Silence.
Ted Lilly had ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Milton Bradley, Jim Hendry, Ted Lilly
