Milwaukee Brewers: What Is The Trade Market For Mat Gamel?

When the Brewers traded JJ Hardy for Carlos Gomez, they sealed their fate as to how they will acquire starting pitching this winter.
Other than John Lackey, the free agent class for pitchers is rather underwhelming, but Brewers' GM Doug Melvin is determined to find two starters on the market.
The Brewers still have players they could trade for pitching, most notably Mat Gamel. Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi report that while a trade isn't out of the question, it is unlikely to happen unless the Brewers find another team willing to offer comparable pitching talent that is the equivalent of Gamel.
In the report, they note the logjam the Brewers could have in the infield. Rickie Weeks and Casey McGehee will enter the season as the starters at second and third base respectively. Gamel will serve as the primary back-up at third, while McGehee could also fill in for Weeks at second on occasion.
If the Brewers decide McGehee is capable of being a full-time player, they could still decide to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers

Arizona Brewers: Best Season Since 2002

The Arizona Brewers, the Brewers Rookie affiliate Minor League team, had it's best season since 2002, when they went 26-30.
When looking at low Minor League affiliated teams, the record doesn't always indicate the success of a team. Since the Arizona Brewers are the first step in a Minor League players progression through the Brewers organization, it is very common to have players get called up to progress quicker.
This year the Brewers went 25-31, and finished fourth in the AZL East. The Brewers had some stand out players this year who are helping their chances of impressing their club owners.

  Position Players
  Mike Brownstein — 2B
Brownstein was the Brewers' 14th round selection out of the University of New Mexico. Brownstein posted some good numbers his senior year at New Mexico, including a .414 batting average with a .486 on-base percentage, 23 doubles, 11 triples, 49 RBI and 20 stolen bases in 57 games for the Lobos. In each of his three collegiate seasons his numbers ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, Arizona Brewers

Teams already lining up to negotiate with Lackey

                    Sporting News staff reports

Teams already are lining up to talk with the agent of Angels righthander John Lackey, according to MLB.com.
Lackey, 31, already has been identified as the top pitcher in this year's free-agent market and interest seems to be getting hotter leading up to Friday—the day the Angels lose exclusive negotiating rights and the dollar figures really start to grow.
According to MLB.com, the Red Sox, Mets and Brewers already have had preliminary discussions with agent Steve Hilliard, and the Yankees almost assuredly will join the discussion at some point. Sources in Seattle have identified the Mariners as an interested party as well.
The Mets and Red Sox are said to be compiling "due diligence" reports on Lackey's health after consecutive seasons in which he made only 24 and 27 starts. He was sidelined in both seasons by various arm injuries.
The Red Sox are expected to become a very ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, John Lackey, Boston Red Sox, Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, New York Mets

Would Edwin Jackson Be a Good Fit For The Milwaukee Brewers?

Rumors have surfaced in recent days that Milwaukee Brewers' GM Doug Melvin has talked with Tigers' GM Dave Dombrowski over the possibility of acquiring starting pitcher Edwin Jackson. Jackson is being shopped in a cost-cutting move by the Tigers.
Jackson is coming off the best statistical season of his career, and he is under team control for two more years. He made $2.2 million in 2009.
It was a tale of two seasons for the young righty. He was named to his first All-Star team in July with a 7-4 record and a 2.52 ERA.
By the end of the season, his ERA had risen to 3.62 with a record of 13-9. Over his final 12 starts, he gave up three runs or less only three times. He finished the season with almost 30 more innings pitched than at any point in his career.
It appeared that he suffered from a tired arm, but it should be something that won't hamper him in the future. He's now been a regular starter for three seasons, building up his innings pitched each year. There should be no ill effects from ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, Edwin Jackson

Where Will Ben Sheets Head for the 2010 MLB Season?

Ben Sheets, the former Milwaukee Brewers' ace, has not filed for free agency this year. He hasn't needed to. For the last year, Sheets, 31, sat on the free agent market, the most notable in-season free agent. Last offseason, the New York Mets and Texas Rangers were in hot pursuit of Sheets.
However, he opted for elbow surgery to repair his torn flexor tendon. After having elbow surgery he has begun rehabbing the elbow at TMI Sports Medicine in Arlington, Texas. The clinic is owned and operated by the Texas Rangers team doctor. While Sheets is not technically connected to the Texas Rangers, they did show interest in the offseason.
Texas seems like an obvious destination for Sheets, close to his home in Baton Rouge, and quickly becoming a pitcher's paradise. New pitching coach Mike Maddux quickly transformed the Rangers from their classic style of being dependent on the long-ball to a well-rounded playoff contender.
Sheets is oft-injured, but many, including myself, think that his year off has ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Texas Rangers, Ben Sheets, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers

A week from today, MLB free agency officially will open. At that point, teams will be free to talk money with not only their own free agents but all free agents. This isn't a great free-agent class, but there are several impact players who will have the big-market franchises throwing plenty of money their way.
For once, all eyes won't be on the Yankees. Sure, they have decisions to make on Johnny Damon, Hideki Matsui and Andy Pettitte, among others, but they don't have to spend nearly a half a billion dollars this offseason. Instead, these teams will be the ones that will shape the market:

Matt Holliday likely will be pursued by the Mets, Red Sox and others.
Mets. After a disastrous fourth-place finish that coincided with their crosstown rivals winning their 27th World Series, the Mets need an overhaul. Injuries played a big part in their 2009 struggles, but this team can't afford to go into the season with Daniel Murphy at first base, Luis Castillo at second base and some revolving ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Matt Holliday, Boston Red Sox, New York Mets, San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers, Milwaukee Brewers

Pitching for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2010: Jon Garland

One of the most important attributes in building a pitching rotation is the durability of the pitchers. When a team can rely on a starter to go out every fifth day to make his start, they have the foundation for a very good rotation.
When Brewers' GM Doug Melvin looks over a list of available starting pitchers this winter he'll find few pitchers that are more reliable and durable than Jon Garland. The Dodgers have declined their option on Garland, making him one of the more attractive options on the open market.
Since becoming a full-time starter in 2002, Garland has averaged 32 starts a season and over 200 innings pitched while winning an average of 13 games.
While his career 4.42 ERA may not be spectacular, he doesn't walk many batters. He also doesn't strike out very many batters either. He pitches to contact, so he needs to have a good defense behind him to achieve success.
He made $6.25 million last year when the market was slow. Many pitchers, Garland included, signed a one-year deal ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, Jon Garland

Lackey might be out of Brewers' price range

                    Sporting News staff reports

After finishing the 2009 season with an MLB-worst 5.37 rotation ERA, the Brewers are in the market for starting pitching. However, general manager Doug Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the team might not be able to afford free agent righthander John Lackey.
Lackey is considered the top available starting pitcher on the market, but he is rumored to be seeking a deal comparable to the five-year, $82.5 million contract the Yankees gave A.J. Burnett last offseason.
Melvin acknowledged he spoke with the agent for free agent starters Randy Wolf and Doug Davis at this week's general manager meetings in Chicago. The newspaper also listed free agent starters Jon Garland, Jarrod Washburn, Jason Marquis and Mark Mulder as possible fits for Milwaukee.
As for the trade market, Melvin told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel it hasn't developed yet. "It's still real early," Melvin said. "Not a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, John Lackey, Los Angeles Angels, Doug Melvin, New York Yankees

The Milwaukee Brewers Are Preparing For 2011, Not 2010

Although the offseason has barely begun, the Milwaukee Brewers are already making their plans for this time next year. Rebuilding, retooling, or reloading; call it whatever you like but that's what the Brewers are using the 2010 season to do.
While this may be hard for fans to swallow only a year after making the playoffs for the first time in 26 years, it's a harsh reality of being a small or mid-market team in the current baseball economy. The Brewers simply cannot hope to compete for the playoffs year in and year out.
Critics will say if the Brewers aren't trying to win a championship while they have Prince Fielder that they should just trade him now for the best package. However, the plan is for the Brewers to make their biggest push for a championship in 2011. If they are unable to sign Fielder, then they will at least have a foundation to continue competing after his departure. It's also the right thing for Brewers' GM Doug Melvin to do.
The team will spend 2010 having several members of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, Prince Fielder

Pitching For the Milwaukee Brewers In 2010: Jarrod Washburn

When the current crop of free agent pitchers are discussed, the name that most frequently comes up as a fit for the Milwaukee Brewers is Jarrod Washburn. This isn't the first time the two have been linked together. In fact, Washburn has been mentioned as an option for the Brewers almost his entire career.
Washburn is a Wisconsin native, having pitched in college at the University of Oshkosh. The Brewers had interest in him after the 2005 season, but he chose to sign with the Seattle Mariners.
His name came up this year prior to the trade deadline in July. Mariners' GM Jack Zduriencik reportedly asked for both Mat Gamel and Alcides Escobar for the three month rental of Washburn. Brewers GM Doug Melvin wisely spurned the offer, but is again trying to lure the 35-year-old lefty to Milwaukee.
Other than his win-loss record, Washburn was having the best statistical season of his career for Seattle last season before being traded to the Tigers. That was after having the worst statistical season of ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, Jarrod Washburn

Brewers, Mariners may bid on Doug Davis; Milwaukee may let Jason Kendall walk

                    Sporting News staff reports

Free-agent left-hander Doug Davis has at least two teams pursuing in him--the Milwaukee Brewers and the Seattle Mariners, acording to reports by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and FoxSports.com.

Milwaukee tried to acquire Davis from the Arizona Diamondbacks during the season. Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik knows Davis from their days together with the Brewers. Davis pitched for the club from 2003 to 2006.

The Journal-Sentinel also reported that the Brewers may let catcher Jason Kendall leave as a free agent. Kendall made $5 million in 2009, and GM Doug Melvin appears reluctant to commit that much money to the position when he needs to shore up the pitching staff. Melvin indicated prospects Angel Salome and Jonathan Lucroy could be ready to make the jump to the majors next season. "We do have two good, young catchers," Melvin told the newspaper.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, Doug Davis, Jason Kendall, Seattle Mariners, Arizona Diamondbacks, Doug Melvin

Pitching For The Milwaukee Brewers in 2010: John Lackey

Much in the same fashion that CC Sabathia was the top pitching prize last winter, John Lackey will find himself in that position this winter. Lackey may find more suitors than Sabathia did, but he won't command nearly the same contract the big lefty did.
No fewer than eight teams have been linked as possible destinations for the Angels' ace. The Angels, Mets, Yankees, Dodgers, Rangers, Brewers, Orioles, and Astros have all been reported as having interest. Also, reports range in him getting anywhere from a three to six year contract with dollar amounts varying from $36-100 million.
Not only will the contracts vary on Lackey, but the role he serves will depend on which team he decides to pitch for.
The Yankees, Mets, and Astros already have established top-of-the-rotation pitchers. He would serve as a solid number two or lower pitcher for these teams.
The Dodgers could use him as an ace or mid-rotation pitcher depending on what they decide to do with Chad Billingsley. His acquisition would ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, John Lackey, Milwaukee Brewers, C.C.
Decision Time: The Brewers 2009 Type B Free Agents

The Elias Sports Bureau released its 2009 free agent rankings Elias Rankings Rumors: MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com On this list is five players from the Brewers 2009 campaign.
Mike Cameron, Braden Looper, David Weathers, Felipe Lopez, and Jason Kendall are all free agents this year. It appears that they will be cutting ties with all of them based either on financial, or production concerns.
For losing a type "B" free agent the Brewers would receive a compensation pick sandwiched between the first and second rounds of next years first year players draft.
While this sounds great there is also a catch. The Brewers will have to offer salary arbitration to the player and have them not except to receive this compensation.
So with limited money to spend this year, and most of it needed for improving the pitching staff, the Brewers need to be very sure that any player offered arbitration would decline it.
So lets take a look at each player and what the chances that they will be offered ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, Jason Kendall, David Weathers

Pitching for the Milwaukee Brewers In 2010: Brad Penny

Remarkably inconsistent.
It's a phrase that not only describes Brad Penny, but almost all the pitchers on the free agent market this winter. There are no "sure things" on the market, and any pitcher that Brewers GM Doug Melvin decides to sign will come with a big risk in one way or another for the Milwaukee Brewers.
Penny had a tumultuous 2009. It started off signing in Boston over the winter for a one-year, $5 million contract. After a subpar first few months, he asked for his release from the Red Sox and received it.
He then signed with the San Francisco Giants for the stretch run and pitched better for them than at any point of his career. He went 4-1 in six starts and finished with a 2.59 ERA in 41 2/3 innings pitched.
Prior to the season, Penny was in a situation similar to what Ben Sheets , Erik Bedard , and Mark Mulder are facing right now: he needed to show he could stay healthy for an entire year in hopes of earning a big pay day at the end of the year. He did just that by ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Brad Penny, Milwaukee Brewers

Friday's Trade of JJ Hardy Leaves Milwaukee Brewers With Cash to Spend

Friday's interesting Milwaukee-Minnesota Midwest regional trade was nice to see. Not only were old divisional rivals coming together for a rare trade that benefits both teams, but it leaves the Brewers with some interesting options.
First, by swapping Hardy for Gomez, the Brewers saved approximately $4.2 million in 2010 salary as Gomez makes roughly $400,000 to Hardy's slated $4.6 million. Next, they picked up an extra year of service time for Gomez, who won't be a free agent for three years to Hardy's two.
If you read the recent Emett Prosser OnMilwaukee article , by also not re-signing old center fielder Mike Cameron, the Brewers will save an additional $10 million. Add this all up and the Brewers suddenly have about $14.5 million to work with.
Prosser notes this trade is just the beginning for the Brewers, who have made it no secret they want to add some pitching (don't we all?). While his article, provided, doesn't offer any clues, at least it confirms what position(s) the club will be ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, J.J.
Pitching for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2010: Doug Davis

With JJ Hardy finally dealt, it's time for Brewers GM Doug Melvin to focus on fixing the starting rotation. We've already looked at Erik Bedard and Mark Mulder as possible answers, and now let's take a look at a former Brewer who is willing to come home again: Doug Davis.
Davis pitched in Milwaukee from 2003-2007 before being traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks for Johnny Estrada. Davis compiled a 37-36 record for the Brewers with a 3.92 ERA in 111 starts.
He has turned himself into one of the most durable pitchers in the game. Over the past six seasons, he has only made fewer than 33 starts in a year once, in 2008. That season, Davis was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
Incredibly, Davis made two starts after receiving the news before having surgery to remove the cancerous thyroid. He missed only six weeks that year while recovering from the surgery and chemotherapy before returning to the Diamondbacks. He finished the year making every start after his return, and he did the same in 2009.

Milwaukee Brewers: The Likely Fallout from the Carlos Gomez Trade

Now that a day has passed, and Brewers' GM Doug Melvin has spoken about it, it's time to figure out what the acquisition of Carlos Gomez means for the Brewers this offseason.
Melvin commented at his press conference yesterday that he received no offers for pitching that he felt was worth trading Hardy for. Gomez fit a need for the Brewers, and he was comfortable enough with the offer to make the deal.
Many fans figured Boston was the destination for Hardy that made the most sense. In fact, Tony Massarotti of the Boston Globe confirmed that the Red Sox were in on the discussions for Hardy.
Melvin tried to get Clay Buchholz or Daniel Bard, but Boston was only willing to part with Michael Bowden. Buchholz would have stepped right into the rotation behind Yovani Gallardo. Bard would have been a great arm in the bullpen, and he could have been a future closer after Trevor Hoffman left.
While Bowden may not be as well-known as Buchholz or Bard, he's still a very promising pitcher. He was ranked ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, Carlos Gomez
