Ted Simmons has been a lot of places and done a lot of things during his long career in baseball.
NL Central: The Most Interesting Division Race In Baseball

Normally, the first parts of August are spent with contenders testing out their new trade acquisitions. Fading teams fade further, dominant teams dominate, and the rest sit there in limbo. For the NL Central, that was anything but.

The Chicago Cubs have continued their assertion as the best team of not only the NL Central, but the National League in general. They are 16-6 through Aug. 26 and are looking at a quick series with the Pittsburgh Pirates followed by an important series against the contending Phillies.
While they are only one game above .500 on the road, they have been simply unbeatable at Wrigley this year. They are also looking at a ninth straight series win. With numbers like this, it would take an utter meltdown (which is completely impossible in the minds of Cubs fans under the age of 100) to derail this pain train on the NL Central.
  Playoff Berth: Guaranteed

The Milwaukee Brewers look ahead to a very important series in St. Louis starting tonight. While ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers

The Week Ahead: Yet Another Test For The Cardinals

At this point in the season, every game matters. It's like the NFL in that once you get past week 10, you cannot lose more than once if you want to be a real contender. It's do or die time. As August ends, the Cardinals again look uphill to what will be a tough end of the season, and one that is still very unsure of. This week the Brew Crew returns to St. Louis. What will be on many people's minds is how much the Brewers have seemed to have the Cardinals number this season. While it's only a two game series, only 3.5 games separate these two clubs. If the Cardinals were to take both games, it would be a huge momentum turn. With the Brewers set to dance with the Bucs in Pittsburgh after the short stint in St. Louis, the Cardinals need wins. It is no secret the Pirates are not a team who is a formidable opponent. It can almost be guaranteed that they'll take the series from the Pirates. The Cardinals need wins now. Even worse for the Cardinals is that they don't have a team they can walk all over. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers, Pittsburgh Pirates

Catching Up with the St. Louis Cardinals As They Take on the Brewers

It's been a hectic last week for me, and I apologize for not being here. I haven't had a chance to listen to or watch a lot of the games.
I moved into my apartment in NYC, but I'm now going through orientation and all the paperwork that a large grad school/hospital entails. It's enough to keep me very busy.
I normally score the games as I listen or watch, or score them retroactively if I miss a game...not sure I'm going to get caught up, but we will see what happens.

  OPSing the week away
I wanted to get caught up quickly on the last week or so of baseball. ESPN does some great splits, so here are the OPSes of a few Cardinals over the last seven days (with 10-plus at-bats):

Albert Pujols: 1.757 Yadier Molina: 1.211 Skip Schumaker: .988 Felipe Lopez: .745 Cesar Izturis: .702 Troy Glaus: .675 Ryan Ludwick: .664 Rick Ankiel: .592
The Cards had a pretty solid week without extremely good performances from Ludwick, Glaus, or Ankiel.

  Shortstop watch A quick ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers

Cubs to Face Many Challenges in NL Playoff Push

With a Major League best record of 80-50 after a 6-1 win over the Washington Nationals on Sunday, the Cubs are showing no signs of slowing down heading into the final month of the regular season.
With yesterday's win, the Cubs notched their 15th win this month. That matches the number of wins they had in June (15-12) and July (15-11). They are currently 15-6 in August, with a week left in the month. If the Cubs continue this level of play in September, they will push the 100 win mark. The last time a Cubs team won 100 games: 1935, when the season was only 154 games.
However, the road will get a lot tougher for the Cubs very quickly. If they do get to 100 wins, or more importantly, hold on to win the NL Central, they will certainly have earned it.
The Cubs' remaining schedule starts with a three game series this week in Pittsburgh against the Pirates. Next the Cubs come back to Wrigley for four games against the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers

Cubs' Harden Hardly Hittable: Brewers playing with fire?

The Cubs claimed the rubber game against the lowly Washington Nationals on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Wrigley Field. It seems that someone forgot to tell Cubs hitters that the wind was blowing straight in, as the long ball carried them to victory behind stud pitcher Rich Harden.
Harden tossed seven innings of two-hit ball giving him his fourth win wearing Cubbie blue. Harden punched out 11 batters, tying his career high, and rendered no free passes. The way Rich is pitching and being managed, you have to believe the Cubs are in a much better situation then Milwaukee is with C.C. Sabathia. I am sorry to say it Brewer fans, but at the rate Ned Yost is using your ace, I would not be surprised to see his arm fall right off with his next fastball. Maybe a tad dramatic, but reference Mark Prior and Kerry Wood's 2004 season after they were over-worked for a combined seven complete games and over 422 innings. You can even ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, Rich Harden, Milwaukee Brewers, Mark Prior, Kerry Wood

J.J. CC Sabathia got a no-decision instead of a win for a change, but the Brewers still kept pace in the playoff race with their 23rd win in their last at-bat and ninth series sweep this season.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, J.J.
Can CC Sabathia Win The NL Cy Young? If Not, Who Will It Be?

Carston Charles Sabathia made his first start as a Brewer on July 8. Sabathia surrendered two earned runs through six innings, earning his first victory as a Brewer.
Since then, Sabathia has won each of his eight decisions in the National League, going the distance in five of those games. With an E.R.A. of 1.59 and an average of just under nine strikeouts per nine innings, Sabathia has kept Milwaukee in the playoff picture.
He has only pitched in the National League for half of a season, and was just mediocre in the American League during the first half. Sabathia ended his tenure as an Indian with a 6-8 season record and a 3.78 E.R.A.
There is no doubt that Sabathia has been close to invincible on the mound since joining the Brewers, but is it really fair that some baseball analysts are throwing his name into the NL Cy Young race?
Brandon Webb, who leads the NL in wins and ranks second in innings pitched, won his first nine starts of the season.
New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies Make NL East Pretty Weird, Huh?

All of the sudden the Mets lead the NL East by 2.5 games—come on, Phillies, what kind of dumb stupid stuff are you trying to pull?
The Phillies have been picked to win the division for a good part of the year. Now the freaking Mets, who were all but put to death not long ago, are on top the division? Are you kidding me?
Does anyone have an opinion of what the Mets will be like in the playoffs? Are they capable of going on a serious playoff run? Obviously the D-backs, Cubs, and Brewers are better than the Mets, so it would be tough for the Mets to make some serious noise in the postseason, y'all.
The Phillies still have a good chance, though—wouldn't it be cool if the Mets blew a 7.5-game lead again like they did last year? Well, it wouldn't be cool—on the Mets side it would be sad, especially since it would be a really bad way to close out Shea Stadium.
As a Phillies fan, though, here's to hoping the final game at Shea is during the regular season.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, Shea Stadium, Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee Brewers

Adam Wainwright To Take The Hill Friday For St. Louis Cardinals

On June 7, 2008, Adam Wainwright experienced what looked to be a very minor injury to his right middle finger.
Now, on August 21, 2008, Wainwright is preparing to start his first ball game since hitting the DL more than two months ago.
As the St. Louis Cardinals ace, Wainwright compiled a 6-3 record with a 3.14 ERA, which was best in the corps of starters at the time of his injury.
What should we expect from the big righty? According to manager Tony La Russa, quite frankly, not too much.
The Redbirds have slotted Joel Pineiro to take the back part of the game from Wainwright, who is only expected to toss a few innings.
It would be awfully nice to see Wainwright put together some solid innings, especially against the franchise that drafted him, the Atlanta Braves.
His 6-3 record doesn't exactly speak the whole truth about his year. He has gone 8+ innings in four starts this year, not to mention five more starts of at least seven innings.
Cardinals fan should definitely be excited, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Adam Wainwright, St. Louis Cardinals, Milwaukee Brewers
