Losing Matsui is risky business for Yanks

Hideki Matsui is a free agent and wants to return, but do the Yankees risk losing more than just a slugger if they do not re-sign him? Is possibly keeping him purely about baseball or is it a decision that strays into the Yankees' global business interests, too?

Yankees add seven to roster

The Yankees added seven players to their 40-man roster today, protecting them from being selected in the Rule 5 Draft: RHPs Hector Noesi, Ivan Nova and Romulo Sanchez, infielders Reegie Corona, Eduardo Nunez and Kevin Russo and outfielder Austin Jackson.

Here's a quick rundown of the group:

Noesi, 22, appeared in 26 combined games (20 starts) with Single-A Charleston and Single-A Tampa in 2009, going 6-4 with a 2.92 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 117 IP. He also combined to hold opponents to a .220 batting average (96-for-436) with only 15 walks and was named a midseason All-Star with Charleston. Noesi was originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on December 3, 2004, out of the Dominican Republic.

Nova, 22, made 24 combined starts with Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton in 2009, going 6-8 with a 3.68 ERA in 139 1/3 IP. He also made two postseason starts for Scranton, going 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA. Originally signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 15, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees

New York Yankees: The Greatest Team On The Planet

Watching the New York Yankees win the World Series this year made me reflect on the past. My mind wandered to a decade ago and to a specific date, October 27, 1999. A date that represents my all-time greatest sports moment.
Now, I have been to plenty of playoff games in the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL. I have seen championship boxing matches and I've seen Tiger Woods play the Honda Classic. But nothing can compare to being in the stadium when your favorite team wins a championship. The atmosphere is simply electric.
The New York Yankees were up three games to none on the Atlanta Braves heading into game four at Yankee stadium. On the mound were, Roger Clemens vs. John Smoltz. A truly awesome pitching match up with two of the best starting pitchers (both Cy Young winners) in MLB history. The stage was set and everything was perfect in the Bronx.
The Yankees took a 3-0 lead in the third and things were pretty quiet until both teams scored a run in the eighth making it 4-1.
Since you all know the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees

Knicks looking for a little Yankee magic

Now that the Knicks have apparently decided not to sign Allen Iverson, it seems like they're looking for some positive PR.

Enter Joe Girardi.

The Yankees manager was named as the winner of the Knicks' Sweetwater Clifton "City Spirit" Award for the month of November. The award, named in honor of Nat "Sweetwater" Clifton, the first African-American to play for the Knicks, recognizes individuals who have made a significant difference in the lives of others.

The winner is chosen monthly by members of the Knicks front office staff and honored at center court during a Knicks game with a $2,000 donation in his or her name made out to a charity of their choice.

Just hours after leading the Yankees to the World Series title on Nov. 4, Girardi served as a good Samaritan by stopping to aid Marie Henry, who had been involved in a car accident on the Cross County Parkway in Westchester County. Girardi, who was driving home, came to her assistance and flagged down police. Henry sustained only minor ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Joe Girardi

Hall of Fame has some new additions

If you’ve never been to the Baseball Hall of Fame, now is the perfect time.

That’s because the Hall has added artifacts from the Yankees’ World Series win to its “Autumn Glory” exhibit in Cooperstown.

Among the items donated by the Yankees:

* Hideki Matsui’s Game 6 bat, when the World Series MVP drove in a Fall Classic record-tying six runs.
* Mariano Rivera’s postseason cap, when Rivera saved five of the Yankees’ 11 wins and posted a 0.56 ERA.
* Derek Jeter’s Game 6 bat; Jeter hit .407 in the World Series with five runs scored.
* Andy Pettitte’s World Series cap; Pettitte was 2-0 in the World Series, 4-0 in the 2009 postseason and was the winning pitcher in all three of the Yankees’ series-clinching victories.
* Johnny Damon’s spikes from his Game 4 double steal; Damon hit .364 in the World Series with six runs scored.

How Do the New York Yankees Approach Free Agency 2010?

At midnight, it begins.
Free agency basically ends everything from the 2009 season and begins the 2010 season.
For the 2009 World Series champion New York Yankees, it too begins their journey of defending their new championship that they worked hard to win.
Most people are probably wondering, where do the Yankees start in the offseason?
They have their own free agents to decide whether or not to bring back.
Most feel confident that Andy Pettitte will be brought back as long as he doesn't want to retire. In last year's offseason, Pettitte didn't sign with the Yankees until January 26, but that was only because the Yankees didn't see him as a priority in that offseason. They will now after he won four postseason games, including World Series Game Six, clinching the win.
Also, many feel that Pettitte is due for a pay raise from the $5.5 million he got in 2009, and because of what he did for the Yankees in 2009, a raise is absolutely necessary.
The other two free agents the Yankees have to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees

The free agency signing period kicks off at 12:01 a.m. Friday, but don't expect the Yankees to storm out of the gate. Unlike their counterparts in the NFL, baseball general managers tend to take a slower, more cautious approach.

Yankees getting into the Halladay chase

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to a report on SI.com, the Yankees recently called the Blue Jays to inquire about ace Roy Halladay.
New Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos has hinted that he would deal his ace to a team within the division, thus giving the Yankees and Red Sox a more realistic chance to acquire the former A.L. Cy Young winner. There also have been indications that Anthopoulos might allow an interested team to negotiate a contract extension with Halladay before trading for him.
SI.com reports both the Yankees and Red Sox made a run at Halladay before the July 31 nonwaiver trading deadline. However, then-general manager J.P. Ricciardi wasn't willing to move Halladay to a division rival. Because any team trading for Halladay now will get only one season from him -- barring an extension -- Toronto's asking price likely has dropped.
Halladay was 17-10 with a 2.79 ERA with nine complete games and four ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Chase Utley

But things could get ugly in baseball in the very near future. Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports wrote a very interesting piece detailing the brewing war between players and owners. Give it a read.

As A-Rod made his way down Broadway during the Yankees' ticker-tape parade, memories of the Yankees' historic collapse in the 2004 ALCS against the Red Sox flashed through the third baseman's head.

The Creatures don't want to complain. We really don't. But that parade Friday was so badly paced, so bogus, it looked like it was produced by Fox Sports. It could have been a parade for the Kansas City Royals, or the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The new Yankee Stadium has a baseball history now, to go along with the rough birthing that led to this moment in time. The billion-dollar building in the Bronx that stood as a monument to extravagance suddenly stands, also, as a testimony to teamwork.
