Free Agent Predictions Part I: Notable Type A's

As much as I love baseball and miss the game this time of year, I get by fine this time of year thanks to hot stove mania. I'm always all over the web, checking out rumors, getting a grasp of what's going on.

I'm big on predictions too, seeing where everyone thinks free agents will end up. So I'll make some predictions of my own. Yes, I do realize that if I make 50 predictions, I'll be lucky if ten of them are correct.

Also, before you make any criticisms, keep in mind how difficult this is. Piecing this together, figuring out which players are compatible with which teams is no easy task. If your favorite team has a need that I don't account for in this, keep in mind they could fill that need through trade or signing a non-tendered player.

I'll start with the Type A free agents, then Type Bs, and finally a few interesting unranked free agents. Enjoy!

Here's a Thought: Reacting To Andrew Bailey's ROY Victory

Like most sports fans, I take a lot of pride in my predictions that come true. I said the Red Sox would win the 2004 ALCS even when they went down 3-0. I predicted Kurt Warner would be a great NFL QB before he ever took a snap in the league (and I was only nine at the time). I've made a number of other far-fetched predictions that came true in different sports.
However, baseball is a game that is largely random. The year-to-year player variations are staggering, and nobody, no matter their expertise, gets them all right.
To me, that's a big part of what makes the game great. No matter how much you know, or what approach you take, several players a year will always surprise you. Who thought Michael Bourn would be an excellent player in 2009? Who thought Chien-Ming Wang would be terrible?
And hey, I'm man enough to admit when I'm wrong. And Andrew Bailey has certainly proved me wrong.
Even I, a follower of the minors, had no real enthusiasm about Bailey coming into 2009. I knew who the guy ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Andrew Bailey, Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants

A's plan to get younger, not load up on veterans

                    Sporting News staff reports

Last offseason, the Oakland Athletics added free agent veterans in first baseman Jason Giambi, shortstop Orlando Cabrera and infielder Nomar Garciaparra. This offseason will be different.
General manager Billy Beane told the A's Web site that he is more interested in adding young players via trades. He doesn't envision pursuing veteran free agents such as Vladimir Guerrero, Miguel Tejada and Carlos Delgado.
"I think our first goal this winter is, the positions we need to fill, fill them with young guys," Beane told the site. "If we get into January and we haven't acquired a young player, then we'll consider a guy to fill in temporarily. The first goal is to find a young guy. Our long-term goal is to create a team with continuity that is going to be here for a number of years."
Oakland is expected to make a push to re-sign a couple of its own veteran free agents: infielder Adam Kennedy ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Oakland Athletics, Adam Kennedy, Justin Duchscherer, Jason Giambi, Orlando Cabrera

Why Andrew Bailey Should Have Ran Away with the AL Rookie of the Year Award

Andrew Bailey should have been a near-unanimous selection for the American League Rookie of the Year Award. Bailey was by far the best rookie in the American League in 2009, and it's ridiculous that he only got 13 first-place votes out of the 28 votes that were cast.
Elvis Andrus of the Texas Rangers finished second and Rick Porcello of the Detroit Tigers finished third. The Chicago White Sox feel like Gordon Beckham should have been also near the top.
Here's the reason why Bailey won the award: He was consistent throughout the season. He didn't just have one long stretch of doing a great job while struggling otherwise. Throughout the season, Bailey came into a game and shut teams down, and only a couple of times was Bailey ever really hit hard.
The problem with Andrus and why he never was going to win the award is that offensively he isn't anything special, as he's primarily known for his glove.
Porcello came in third because his numbers of 14-9 were impressive, but his strikeout-to-walk ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Andrew Bailey, Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants

What the A's need is a hitting version of Andrew Bailey, someone to come from virtually nowhere and do for Oakland's lineup what Bailey did for the bullpen. It would be a long shot, but so was Bailey, who won the American League Rookie of the Year Award one...

Chris Coghlan, Andrew Bailey Announced as MLB Rookie of the Year Winners

The National League and American League Rookie of the Year Awards were handed out this afternoon, both of which had most baseball fans asking, "Who the heck is that?" The National League honors went to Florida Marlin outfielder Chris Coghlan. Coghlan hit .321 during his first season, with 162 hits, nine home runs, 47 driven in, and an .850 on-base plus slugging percentage in 504 at-bats. The Florida native finish with 17 first place votes. Runner-up in the National League was the Philadelphia Phillie southpaw J.A. Happ, who received 10 first place votes. In the American League, Andrew Bailey of the Oakland Athletics took the prize. Called up in late April, Bailey took over Oakland's full-time closer role in early May and never looked back. During the season, he managed to break former A's closer Huston Street's record for saves by an Oakland rookie. He was also the only Athletic named to the All-Star Game held in St. Louis back in July. Bailey's final stat line for 2009 ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Oakland Athletics, Andrew Bailey

Bigger Impact for the Boston Red Sox: Matt Holliday or Adrian Gonzalez?

With the trading rumors swirling away, a couple of big names are being thrown around that Boston Red Sox fans are very familiar with.
Left fielder Matt Holliday of the St. Louis Cardinals and first baseman Adrian Gonzalez of the San Diego Padres.

If Theo Epstein can't lock up Jason Bay to a long-term deal, the Sox need to find someone to replace the 2009 Silver Slugger award recipient.

Holliday, 29, struggled when he played in the American League with the Oakland Athletics.

In 93 games with the A's he hit .286 with 11 home runs, 54 RBI, 23 doubles, 1 triple, 12 stolen bases, 46 walks, and 58 strikeouts.

In 63 games with the Cardinals, Holliday batted .353 with 13 HR, 55 RBI, 16 doubles, 2 triples, 2 SB, 26 BB, and 43 strikeouts.

Though he totaled 27 HR and 109 RBI and a .313 BA, would Holliday again struggle if the Sox signed him to play in a tougher AL?

Gonzalez, 27, batted .277 in 160 games with 40 HR, 99 RBI, 27 doubles, 2 triples, 119 BB, and 101 strikeouts.

A's In 2010: In Billy We Trust?

With the Oakland A's coming off a 75-87 record, and their third straight losing season, is it time to question General Manager, Billy Beane's motives?
During his time as General Manager, Billy Beane has made it a habit to trade away his most proven and successful players just before they reach their full potential in exchange for younger talent, who ultimately get traded away for even younger talent.
After being swept by the Detroit Tigers in the ALCS back in 2006, the A's lost Barry Zito and Frank Thomas to free agency. But despite losing two of his best players, Beane buckled down and decided that the A's could go on without them.
In 2007, the A's winning ways were put to an aggrevating hault, as they finished 76-86. Thus, Beane was reminded that the A's were an aging club and that the farm system was dangerously low with talent.
So, during the offseason of 2007-08, Beane decided to trade away not only the club's best pitcher in Dan Haren, but fan favorite Nick Swisher, as well. The "Haren" ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Oakland Athletics, Billy Beane, Billy Wagner

Billy Beane of the A's spent the general managers' meetings in Chicago this week combing for third-base possibilities because the team does not have an automatic option there next season.
