Pat Neshek Done, Minnesota Twins' Bullpen Targets, MiLB Free Agents

• As I am sure you already know, Twins reliever Pat Neshek will be out for all of the 2009 season after suffering a complete tear of his ulnar collateral ligament. He missed the majority of the 2008 season with the injury, but since it was only a partial tear, the Twins decided that he would be best off just rehabbing the injury instead of immediately undergoing the surgery.
Well, after feeling discomfort in his arm during his throwing program last week, an MRI showed that it was fully torn and the surgery would now be necessary. I share the same disappointment in Twins management as everyone else does at this moment. I was skeptical at the initial reports last May of Neshek being told to rehab instead of undergo surgery, so finding out that we're going to go nearly two years before we see our favorite submarine pitcher take the mound is very unsettling. Neshek had this to say ,
"I'm extremely bummed out right now and am at a loss of words," Neshek wrote in an e-mail to the Star Tribune ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Minnesota Twins, Pat Neshek

Pat Neshek: Surgery or Rehab?

After being injured in May this past season, Minnesota Twins reliever Pat Neshek was diagnosed with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament. Neshek would have missed the remainder of the season, but no surgery was required and rehab would heal the injury.
Six months later, Neshek was merely days away from completing rehab, but he experienced discomfort in the same elbow while throwing. An MRI revealed that the other side of the ligament was completely torn away from the bone, and Tommy John surgery would be required.
The initial outcry from fans everywhere thus far has been about whether or not Neshek should have just had surgery to begin with, rather than going through with the rehab. The question is valid, but the team made the right decision.
As mentioned before, Tommy John surgery requires at least a year to recover from, and a lot of time it take 15 months. The injury occurred on May 9 this past season, and by the time the surgery was completed, it would have been closer to June.

Pat Neshek: Was Rehab the Right Choice?

After injuring his throwing elbow in May this past season, Minnesota Twins reliever Pat Neshek was diagnosed with a partial tear of the ulnar collateral ligament. However, no surgery was required, as it was determined that rehab would heal the injury.
Fast foward six months.
Days away from completing rehab, Neshek experiences discomfort in the same elbow while throwing. An MRI revealed that the other side of the ligament was completely torn away from the bone, requiring Tommy John surgery.
The initial outcry from fans everywhere has been whether or not Neshek should have had surgery to begin with, rather than going through with the rehab.
The question is valid, but the team made the right decision.
Tommy John surgery requires at least a year to recover from, and in many cases it takes up to 15 months. The injury occurred on May 9 this past season. Had Neshek's initial prognosis required surgery, it would have taken place closer to June.

A Sad Day: No Pat Neshek in 2009 for Twins

Pat Neshek was injured unexpectedly last season in early May, and although he missed the remainder of the season, the organization and fans everywhere were relieved to find out that it was only a partial tear of the ligament and no surgery was required.
Now, six months later, and just a few days before his rehab was due to be complete, Neshek felt discomfort in the same elbow during a throwing session.
An MRI today revealed that the other side of the ligament has been torn away from the bone, and rehab won't do the trick. The team has announced that sometime in the near future, Neshek will undergo the widely-known Tommy John surgery.
It is the exact same surgery from which left-hander Francisco Liriano returned this past season, with a recovery process of about 10-15 months. The good news for the organization is that the surgery a lot of times allows the pitcher to completely recover, and there have been cases where the pitcher has returned and performed at a higher level.
In March, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Minnesota Twins, Pat Neshek, Al Reyes

Minnesota Twins reliever Pat Neshek will have ligament replacement surgery on his right elbow and is expected to miss next season.
Twins Suffer Devastating Blow: Neshek Out in 2009

So usually devastating injuries only happen during the season, right?
Not in the middle of November when teams are looking to fill holes, not create them. Unfortunately, Seth Stohs of Seth Speak's reports that Twins reliever Pat Neshek, who had an MRI today, learned that his elbow will require Tommy John surgery causing the St. Louis Park native to miss all of the 2009 season.
Now this announcement will come with much grief from Twins fans because when Neshek suffered his elbow injury last May the Twins decided he would rest rather than have surgery. But as Seth reports the ligament that Neshek tore completely off of his bone this past week is on the other side of the ligament he tore in May.
Neshek is expected to recover fully for the 2010 season but the poor guy will have missed over a year and a half of his baseball career. This is a big hit to the Twins, who's biggest weakness in 2008 was the bullpen. Getting Neshek back was going to be like making a big trade, but now the Twins may in ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Minnesota Twins, Pat Neshek, Al Reyes, Colorado Rockies
