was placed in the lead-off position of the Spring
Training game between the Yankees and Pirates at Legends Field in Florida. Crystal struck out, but not before taking Pirates starter Paul Maholm, to 3-1. Crystal, at age 59, wore the number 60 signifying his age when he has his birthday on Friday. Despite his age, Crystal look professional ...

A quick look at who keeps the ball
down and who doesn't among starters.
Neal Huntington indicated that he expects the Pirates
starting rotation to be Ian Snell, Tom Gorzelanny, Paul
Maholm, Zach Duke and Matt Morris. This is not much of a surprise. Snell, Gorzelanny and Maholm were locks, assuming none were involved in a trade. Morris, despite being vastly overpaid, could potentially be a solid fifth starter.
Apparently, the Pirates’ new management has made its
point with the players. Several players attending the team’s

Over a long inaugural winter as the Pirates'
general manager, Neal Huntington had set out to revamp
his roster with significant veteran-for-prospect trades. ...

The performances of the Pirates' rotation are forming a dramatic divide between the good, the bad and the ugly. The good ...
Regarding line drive percentages and luck, doesn't it
make sense to look for pitchers giving up few
line drives and hitters that find the sweet spot? Given that line drives become hits app. 50% of the time, the luck factor deserving focus should be the percentage of line drives that become hits...more so than the pure number of line drives. THT analysis implies that Paul Maholm's line drive ...
BRADENTON, Fla. -- The Pirates this morning made
their first cuts of the spring, sending catchers Steve
Lerud and Milver Reyes back to minor-league camp. That left 65 players in the major-league fold. Also, the team decided that Tom Gorzelanny's one ...

Pirates' most satisfying victory of the season, an exemplary
way to start a 22-game stretch through the Central Division, but the mood was anything but ...

Dejan reports in today's Post-Gazette that the Pirates are
looking at Brian Lawrence . I'm going to tweak Jeff Sackmann's model a bit and make a couple of projections for 2007. First, I'm going to...
