10 Questions You Need Answered Heading Into The NLCS

To get a better gauge on the National League Championship Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies, I decided to ask two hardcore, dedicated members of Bleacher Report what their thoughts were headed into the NLCS. The following is a Q&A of 10 questions that should hopefully help you get a better idea of what to expect.
Dodgers Community Leader Molly Gray: 1. The Dodgers managed to hit only .250 as a team in the three-game sweep of the Cubs, but scored 20 runs in the process. Do you expect this trend of clutch, run-scoring, extra-base hits to continue? MG : If I were to look at the entire season, I’d have to say no. However, in comparing the OBPs over the last 30 days to the OBPs over the regular season, the numbers have gone way up. In the regular season, the Dodgers had only two players with an OBP of over .400 (Manny Ramirez (.489) and Rafael Furcal (.439) there was a third, Terry Tiffee, but he had only four at-bats so we’ll leave him ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, NLCS, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers

No Mistaking Loyalties: An NLCS To Savor

I know I'm not one of the older fans of the Phillies but I'll put my memories and knowledge up there with any of them. It comes from newspapers, family stories, and today, the internet.
But back in the late 80s and early 90s, you only had the paper and the beginnings of the cable boom. One of the first extra cable channels was TBS, based out of Atlanta. All the reruns you could want of old TV shows and.....Atlanta Braves baseball. Which at the time, were worse than the Phillies.
But in 1989, two players had my short attention span as a nine-year-old: Tom Glavine and David Justice. The team was still terrible, but these guys were players. And then 1991 happened.
Before the Rays did it, these guys did it. Before there was the wild card and teams IN Florida, not to mention Colorado. Worst to first, back to back to trips to the World Series, two great NLCS matchups with the Pirates, a thin Barry Bonds for god sakes! Sid Bream, Terry ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, NLCS, Atlanta Braves

For the Phillies, It's Time to Make Some Hay and Erase the Ghosts

For some fans, the Phillies season is about the here and the now. Sure, those fans remember Brett Myers striking out the last Washington Nationals batter to seal up the NL East crown on the last of the season in 2007. But for those of us who remember 1980, including Phillies pitcher—the ageless wonder—Jamie Moyer, who was in high school in 1980. The run to the Phillies only World Series championship started in 1974. The first division crown didn't happen until 1976, but 1974 is the year that second baseman Dave Cash joined the team. He coined the term, "Yes, we can!" That one statement brought a winning attitude to the team, and from 1976-78, the Phils reached the playoffs. The Pittsburgh Pirates won the World Series in 1979. In 1980, the Phllies beat the Houston Astros in the NL playoffs, then the Kansas City Royals in six games in 1980 to win their first and only World Series. The teams of the late 1970's and 1980 were reminiscent of this current crop of Phillies. Mike Schmidt, ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies

Left-hander Clayton Kershaw could be moved into the Dodgers' rotation for the National League Championship Series, Manager Joe Torre said Monday.
New Way of Thinking: A Philadelphia Phillies Retrospective

I was born in 1970. I was six when I started to understand what Major League Baseball was. Both grandfathers, my mother and my father were all Phillies fans. So were two uncles, three aunts and a great grandmother who would sit in a broken recliner listening to the games on the radio.
The Phillies were a religion in my house. Games on TV were appointments that were not to be missed.
I knew Channel 17 was dial position 13 on our television in the living room. I remember contemplating why other teams allowed the Phillies to set up a pre-game show in their ballpark (the fact that the pregame show was shot in a studio in Philadelphia never occurred to me).
I thought Bob Bradley was a hero, Harry Kalas a god, and Andy Musser was something you suffered through until it was Richie Ashburn's turn at the mic.
Most of all I believed the Phillies of Schmidt, Carlton, Bowa, and Boone were the greatest team ever to take the field. The Big Red Machine, Tommy ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Steve Carlton, Mike Schmidt

Philadelphia Phillies Continue Their Quiet Journey

The Philadelphia Phillies have very quietly made their way to the NLCS for the first time since 1993. Just how did the Fightin' Phils accomplish this stealth mission? They basically stayed out of the headline's for most of the season and played ball.
Some of the top stories coming out of Spring Training this year were: Joe Torre's departure from the Bronx and what effect would he have as skipper of the Dodgers. Would Barry Bonds find a home? East Coasters were still baffled by the Mets' '07 meltdown. Were the Detroit Tigers capable of scoring 1,000 runs with their new lineup? And finally, the final 81 games at Yankee Stadium.
By midseason, some things had changed and some stayed the same. Were the Rays for real? Could the Cubbies finally exorcise 100 years of misery? Barry still hadn't found a place to play. Julio Franco, who was playing for the Phillies' class-A Peninsula Pilots in 1980 (the year that the Phillies won their only pennant), was not on a major-league roster for the fist time ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies

Back in the era of cookie-cutter stadiums, polyester pullovers and artificial turf, baseball had another familiar sight: Phillies vs. Dodgers for the NL pennant. "It seemed like every time we turned around, there were the Phillies," former Los Angeles center fielder Rick Monday recalled. They played in the 1977 NL championship series and the next year, too.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, NLCS

Dodgers, Phiilies Send Central Teams Packing: NLCS Preview

The NL Central, the division widely considered the strongest in the National League, has been sent home for the remainder of the season. The Cubbies, with an NL best 97 wins, were swept by the Dodgers and the Wild Card Brewers only managed to win a single game against the Phillies.
Now, the Central is a mere afterthought for the season as the Phillies and Dodgers must focus on the series ahead. The Phillies have home-field advantage in the series, which could be a critical factor in deciding the winner.
These teams met eight times this season, all in August, for a pair of four-game series. The Dodgers swept the Phils at home and the Phillies returned the favor two weeks thereafter, splitting the season series at four games each.
The Dodgers have shown they can win on the road in the playoffs thus far, and in dominating fashion too. Manny Ramirez has been batting a cool .500 and the fielding has been near perfect.
Happy Dodgers get ready to face Phils (AP)

Joe Torre picked up the Dodgers cap on his desk and took a sniff, inhaling the stale scent of champagne. "That's a wonderful smell," he said, smiling and leaning back in his chair. That sweet smell of success still permeated the Dodgers' clubhouse on Monday, barely two days removed from their first-round sweep of the Chicago Cubs in the NL playoffs.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Los Angeles Dodgers, Joe Torre, Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies

Dodgers vs. Phillies: a NLCS Preview

The biggest story in the playoffs has easily been the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Dodgers beat the seemingly invincible Chicago Cubs. This is the team that was supposed to win for the first time in 100 years. This was the team that seemed to be a All Star squad on its own, but two things went wrong for them. The Cubs had an amazing amount of errors and they forgot about someone named Manny Ramirez who had two home runs in three RBI. This led to a 3-0 sweep in the National League Divisional Series.
The Phillies came in on a equal level with the Milwaukee Brewers. They had home field advantage though, which kicked off their series. They took the first two thanks to good pitching from Cole Hamels and Brett Myers, giving three runs in two games.
The third game the Brewers used their home field advantage for a win as Moyer and the bullpen gave up four runs and the Phillies could only manage one. They saw what could happen though, and took Game Four to win the series 3-1 and advance to play the Dodgers. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, NLCS

20 Predictions for the NLCS: Dodgers vs. Phillies

We are now three days away from the first pitch of the NLCS between the L.A. Dodgers and the Philadelphia Phillies. Below are 20 predictions that I personally think will happen in this series. It should be a fun and competitive NLCS; I can't wait until Thursday.

1. The Dodgers will not sweep the Phillies, and the Phillies will not sweep the Dodgers.
2. Ryan Howard and Chase Utley will have at least two intentional walks each.
3. Manny Ramirez will have more than four intentional walks.
4. The Phillies' fans will boo players on both teams.
5. The Dodgers fans will throw at least two beach balls onto the field and boo the fan who did it.
6. Chase Utley will hit a home run and blow a bubble with his gum within three seconds of the ball leaving hi s bat.
7. Manny Ramirez will have an infield single...Charlie Hustle baby.
8. Charlie Manuel will walk from the dugout to the pitchers mound and have a ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, NLCS, Los Angeles Dodgers, Manny Ramirez, Chase Utley

something that Phillies lefty Jamie Moyer has enjoyed merely once before in his 22-year career, and that most of his teammates are embracing for the first time.
Key To Phils Game One Success: Hit The Low(e) Ball

On the surface, an NLCS Game One matchup between Cole Hamels and Derek Lowe may look like a huge advantage to the powerful lefty lineup of the Philadelphia Phillies.
After all, since the beginning of the Chase Utley/Ryan Howard era in Philly, the sight of a power righty on the mound has Phils fans dreaming of balls soaring out of Citizens Bank Park. As Derek Lowe prepares to take the ball in Game One for the Dodgers, this should come with a warning sign for Philly: "BEWARE THE LOW(E) BALL."
Over the past three years, the Phillies have consistently torn apart right-handed pitching in the National League. There have, however, been a couple righties that continue to give Howard and the rest of the Bash Brothers fits. Brandon Webb, Tim Hudson, and Tim Redding come to mind. Oh, and then there is Derek Lowe. The common denominator? A heavy sinker that turns 400 foot shots into measly ground balls to shortstop.
Therein lies the problem for the National League's home ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Derek Lowe, Los Angeles Dodgers, Ryan Howard

(Bad) Back Back Back, Gone: Pat Burrell Launches Phillies into NLCS

Sign me up.
I don't care how, but get me to Pat Burrell's massage therapist. Get me an appointment at the chiropractor. Put me on the Pilate's list.
Whatever Pat Burrell did to unkink his back that enabled him to pound those crucial home runs yesterday, I want in.
I've been writing about how the Phillies were following the script for this series. Strong pitching, streaky hitting, and cardiac moments that crystallized the regular season were playing themselves out again in the postseason—no more so than when Burrell left batting practice the day before the series with Milwaukee began back in Philadelphia.
So naturally, it's only fitting that it's Burrell that steps in following the intentional walk to Ryan Howard. Of course Pat Burrell hits the game-winning, three-run home run that sucks the life out of Miller Park. What else could possibly have happened?
Call it poetic justice, karma, or whatever you want, but "Pat the Bat"—the longest-tenured player on the Phillies ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Pat Burrell, Philadelphia Phillies, NLCS, Milwaukee Brewers, Ryan Howard

Dodgers swept Phillies in a four-game series at Dodger Stadium in August but lost four straight at Philadelphia barely a week later. Phillies' lefty-heavy lineup gives L.A. trouble.

For the first two games of the National League Championship Series, the Dodgers will head back to Philadelphia, the site of a four-game sweep by the Phillies in late August that started a season-long eight-game losing streak for the Dodgers.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, Dodger Stadium

Ken Rosenthal Reacts to Sunday's Playoff Action

Outfielder Jayson Werth coined the phrase, calling the Phillies "a team of necessity." Unlike the Mets and Cubs, who wilt at the worst possible times, the Phils respond to urgency, playing their best when the games matter most.
On Sept. 10, the Phillies trailed the Mets by three-and-a-half games in the National League East, and the Brewers by four games for the wild card. They proceeded to sweep four straight from the Brewers, igniting a 16-4 run that carried them to the N.L. East title and now, the National League Championship Series.
"A team of necessity." It's the best kind, don't you think? A team of necessity doesn't collapse in September like the Mets or October like the Cubs. A team of necessity rises to the moment, leaving the excuses to others.
The Phillies rose up repeatedly down the stretch, most notably on the final Saturday of the regular season, when they beat the Nationals to clinch the division title. That victory, sealed with a spectacular double play started by shortstop Jimmy ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Chicago White Sox, Ken Rosenthal, New York Mets

NLDS Postmortem: Phillies defeat Brewers

I have to admit, I did not have my full attention focused on the Phillies' division series-clinching victory over the Brewers today as I was mostly flipping back and forth between the Rangers and Giants. After Jimmy Rollins homered to lead off Game 4, I just had a feeling that the Phillies weren't going to have any problems finishing off the series.

I turned back in time to see Pat Burrell and Jayson Werth hit back-to-back homers in the third inning, Burrell's a three-run shot. At that point, it was over. The Brewers seemed to be emotionally spent after their wild ride in September, and even though they got a couple of late runs, it was clear that Milwaukee wasn't up to the task of one more comeback today.

In a way, it's too bad, because it would have been really interesting to see CC Sabathia and Cole Hamels go at it in Game 5 in Philadelphia.

Instead, Sabathia likely will never make another start in a Brewer uniform, although I wouldn't completely rule out the possibility of the lefty ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Milwaukee Brewers, Philadelphia Phillies, NLDS

Phillies-Dodgers: NLCS Preview

OK, so I did not exactly pick the Los Angeles Dodgers to beat, let alone sweep, the Chicago Cubs. Honestly, I do not think many people could have predicted a sweep of the Cubbies by the Dodgers—not with Ryan Dempster, Carlos Zambrano, and Rich Harden pitching in those first three games.
Well, it happened.
Now, after seeing the Philadelphia Phillies end their set with the Milwaukee Brewers today, I am slightly more upbeat and optimistic about the Phils' chances in the NLCS.
The key word there is "slightly."
While the Phillies have had great success against the Dodgers in Citizens Bank Park, going 4-0, they could not have bought a win against those same Dodgers out in Chavez Ravine, going 0-4, for a season series split of 4-4.
Sure, the Phillies had the better record of the season, finishing eight games ahead of the Dodgers. Yes, the Phils have names such as Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino, Chase Utley, Ryan Howard, Pat Burrell, and Jayson Werth in their lineup. Oh yeah, and the starting ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Los Angeles Dodgers, NLCS
