Philadelphia Phillies Should Get Back in on Roy Halladay

So, last week, the rumors resurfaced that the Phillies are still trying to acquire Roy Halladay from the Toronto Blue Jays, and the memories of the hours leading up to the trade deadline in July relinquished.
All throughout the middle month of the season, all the talk surrounding Major League Baseball was whether or not Toronto would stick to their word and trade Halladay.
Then general manager J.P. Ricciardi said that he would listen to offers for the right-hander at the start of the month, and Philadelphia had the need and the financial flexibility to make a blockbuster.
For a couple of weeks, Ricciardi played a game of chicken with the Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr . as everyone in Ricciardi's position would. Toronto was asking for the farm while the Phils weren't willing to meet the demand.
In the end, the Phillies ended up acquiring another former Cy Young winner in Cliff Lee for far less than they would have had to give up to get Halladay, who isn't much better than Lee.

A Glance at What's Going on With the Philadelphia Phillies

Paul Hagen wrote a story in yesterday's Philadelphia Daily News informing fans to expect a few fireworks in free agency. Hagen tells us that he doesn't think there will be any introductions of any new Phillies anytime soon.
Tom's Take: It's not really much of a surprise that he writes that; no one is really expecting the Phillies to come out of the gate to sign a top-notch free agent. They're looking at third base, bullpen and bench, and all three positions will require some homework being done before jumping on the perceived top option.
Mike Potter reported that Omar Vizquel is no longer an option for the Phillies as he signed a one-year contract with the Chicago White Sox as the first notable free agent signing. Vizquel will be a backup in the Windy City.
Tom's Take: Vizquel was an intriguing player that many believed that the Phils could be targeting to come off the bench, and backup Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley at shortstop and second base. Players like Jerry Hairston Jr. and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies

What The Doug Glanville Are The Phillies Up To?

The latest out of the Philadelphia Phillies camp is that they want to feel out the market before they move in free agency.
That is better than the story the day before, where a source said that Mark DeRosa could land on the Phillies to fill the shoes of Pedro Feliz.
According to MLB.com, DeRosa hit .250 with 23 home runs and 78 RBIs last season with the Cleveland Indians and St. Louis Cardinals. He hit .285 with 21 homers and 87 RBIs in 2008 with the Chicago Cubs. He had wrist surgery on Oct. 26, but his representatives said Tuesday that DeRosa should resume baseball activities before Spring Training.
According to the story by Todd Zolecki, there are reasons why DeRosa would make sense.
He is from the Northeast. He grew up in New Jersey and attended Penn. He has a reputation as a hard worker and good teammate, which the Phillies consider important attributes.
Ryan Howard is from St. Louis, Mo. Chase Utley and Cole Hamels are from California.

Phillies stressing defense in assembling bench

                    Sporting News staff reports

Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the team will look to add three bench players this offseason, with an emphasis on defense.
Among Philadelphia's free-agent reserves, outfielder Matt Stairs, infielders Miguel Cairo and Eric Bruntlett and C Paul Bako aren't expected to
re-sign.
Amaro added that beefing up his bullpen remains a priority. The newspaper noted free agents Fernando Rodney, Brandon Lyon and J.J. Putz all have experience as setup men and closers.
Finally, FOXSports.com reported Philadelphia has emerged as the favorite to sign free-agent third baseman Mark DeRosa.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Matt Stairs, Miguel Cairo, Eric Bruntlett, Paul Bako, Fernando Rodney

Phillies consider Figgins' asking price too high

                    Sporting News staff reports

The Phillies, in their search for a third baseman to replace Pedro Feliz, apparently won't target free agent Chone Figgins.

That's not because the defending NL champions wouldn't like to add his bat, glove and speed to their already nasty lineup. It's because Figgins is seeking a reported five-year, $50 million contract, according to MLB.com.

The Web site reports that the Phillies already have $106.75 million committed to 12 players, with arbitration-eligible stars Shane Victorino, Joe Blanton and Carlos Ruiz, among others, in line for salary upgrades.

Among the more affordable free-agent candidates to fill the third base void are Adrian Beltre, Mark DeRosa and Placido Polanco, who played in Philadelphia from 2002-05.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chone Figgins, Philadelphia Phillies, Adrian Beltre, Mark DeRosa, Placido Polanco, St. Louis Cardinals

Agent says Pedro Martinez wants to pitch full season in 2010

                    Sporting News staff reports

Free-agent right-hander Pedro Martinez wants to pitch a full season next year, his agent tells FOXSports.com.

Fern Cuza tells the Web site that Martinez is fully healthy for the first time in three years and that pitching in the playoffs with the Phillies "rejuvenated" his client.

"Based on how he played, and how he responded, he's looking forward to playing next year," Cuza says.

Martinez, 38, signed with Philadelphia in midseason, and helped the Phils win the NL championship. He was 5-1 with a 3.63 in nine regular-season starts, then pitched well in the postseason until Game 6 of the World Series. Cuza blamed that bad outing on Martinez having the flu.

"I think he lost 13 pounds," Cuza tells the Web site. "When I saw him in Miami last week, he was still battling it. He said, 'I don't know what hit me.' I don't know how he took the mound that night. I didn't ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Pedro Martinez

Time for Roy Halladay Suitors To "Suit Up"

It's a bitter pill to swallow, but I'm come to grips with the fact that Roy Halladay is likely not going to be a Blue Jay for much longer. The poor guy was dangled like chum in front of hungry sharks at the trade deadline, and now Alex Anthopoulous has the daunting task of trading away the franchise's best player. By this point, I'm sure Alex Anthopoulos and Paul Beeston have narrowed down the candidates to which they are willing to trade Roy Halladay to. Ultimately, Doc has the final the say the matter so that means any potential suitors must be contendors and give him a chance at winning. Below is what I believe to be the short list of candidates for Roy Halladay: Los Angeles Angels The Angels seem to be the front-runners on the short-list to land Halladay in a trade. They have handily won the AL West the past five out of six years and would give Doc arguably the best chance to pitch in the playoffs. Whether or not John Lackey walks away from the Angels, they could definitely ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies

Happy for an old friend

Caught up briefly with former Yankee coach Don Zimmer Friday at the dinner for Joe Torre’s Safe at Home Foundation and Zim had the same old twinkle in his eye as he recounted that he recently signed his 62nd baseball contract. Zim will return to the Rays as an advisor next season.

Zimmer also talked about how delighted he was for Joe Girardi after the Yankees won the World Series. Zim and Girardi were together with the Cubs, the Rockies and the Yankees and Zimmer adores Girardi.

“I was pulling so hard for him,” Zimmer said. “I spent the first 10 years of his career with him. In Chicago, he was a rookie catcher for me. Joe is quite a man and a very good friend of mine. I was happy for him and the Yankees. I always thought he could be anything he wanted to be - if he wanted to be an engineer, he could.”

A few days after the Yanks had dispatched the Phillies in the Fall Classic, Zimmer called his pal to congratulate him. The feisty old Brooklyn Dodger also took ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Joe Girardi, Philadelphia Phillies

'Pete Happy' Pedro Felix May Not Be Leaving Philly After All

A lot of the talk around the Phillies right now is regarding who will replace Pedro Feliz as third baseman, after the team declined their $5.5 million option to bring him back next season.
The team will test the free-agent market but don’t be surprised if there is no new third baseman after all.
Feliz may just be the best option.
Names like Adrian Beltre, Chone Figgins, Mark DeRosa, Joe Crede, Troy Glaus, Melvin Mora, Placido Polanco, and even Miguel Tejada have arisen to compete with Feliz, but there are flaws just about everywhere you look in that bunch.
Though baseball has no salary cap, the Phillies do and they already have an enormous payroll. Players like Figgins and Beltre will command large dollar amounts for not much more production than Feliz provided the team with.
Feliz was certainly among the unappreciated members of the 2009 Phillies, doing so much good with his glove and holding his own from the right-hand batter's box.
His .266 batting average and 82 RBIs are just about ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Pedro Feliz, Chone Figgins

Lidge has elbow surgery, could start spring late

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to The Philadelphia Inquirer, Phillies closer Brad Lidge had successful surgery Wednesday to fix the problem with his flexor pronator tendon and remove a loose body in the pitching elbow.
The team expects Lidge to begin throwing in eight weeks.
"Brad could be one or two weeks behind in spring training, but, overall, we feel very good about his recovery time," general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said through a team spokesman. "We're hopeful that he will be ready close to opening day."
Lidge's 2009 struggles were well-documented. In the regular season, he went 0-8 with a 7.21 ERA and an MLB-worst 11 blown saves. He returned to dominant form in the postseason, until suffering the loss in Game 4 of the World Series.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Brad Lidge, Philadelphia Phillies

Philadelphia Phillies Pursuing Chone Figgins, Mark DeRosa

Jon Heyman of Sports Illustrated is reporting that the Phillies are "intent on pursuing Chone Figgins hard," and that they have already reached out to fellow free agent third baseman Mark DeRosa.
Philadelphia is seeking a replacement at third base after declining Pedro Feliz's $5.5 million option this past weekend, and Heyman claims that they feel that Figgins presents the biggest upgrade to the Phightens.
Figgins is the cream of the crop at the hot corner on the open market, and will more-than-likely find himself landing a pretty big paycheck whether it'll be re-signing with Los Angeles or somewhere else.
The 31-year-old hits for a high average, gets on-base by all means and steals a ton of bases batting mostly leadoff for the Angels in his seven-year career. Last year, he had a career high .395 on-base percentage.
Figgins batted .298 with five dingers and 54 RBI in 158 games for the Halos last year while stealing 49 bases, and walking 101 times. If he was in the Phils' lineup, he'd lead ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, Chone Figgins, Mark DeRosa, Jimmy Rollins, Jon Heyman

Phillies GM denies he's looking to trade Hamels

                    Sporting News staff reports

After hearing persistent rumors at the general managers meetings that the Phillies are trying to trade left-hander Cole Hamels, GM Ruben Amaro Jr. issued a very blunt denial.

"We have no thoughts of trading Cole Hamels," he told the Philadelphia Inquirer. "I don't know where those rumors are coming from, but that's exactly what they are. Cole Hamels is our pitcher and we're keeping him, and I'm glad to have him."
Amaro said he has no doubt Hamels will bounce back from a disappointing season and become a top-of-the-rotation twin with fellow lefty Cliff Lee.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Cole Hamels, Philadelphia Phillies, Cliff Lee

Veteran's Day Special: The Story of a Never-Was

I want to ask each and every one of you a question. What becomes of the never-was? Not the has-beens, the drop-outs, or the draft-day busts. I speak of the men who were never given their chance to compete at the major league level. They were robbed of the chance to play the game they loved. I present to you, on this Veteran's Day, the story of one such man.
I consider this man to be a friend. I do not know his family, or his friends. I merely know him as the man who cleans, sells, and ships my glasses. I come in to have my lenses cleaned and listen to one of his clever jokes. One day, I sit down, and he takes my glasses, and begins one of his classic yarns.
"Did I ever tell you I was drafted by the Phillies?"
I just stared blankly in bewilderment. I knew that he was a big baseball fan, but I assumed he would have said something if he had been a big-leaguer.
"Unfortunately, I was drafted by the Army, too."
I gave him that sorrowful look, one of pity that you give someone when you know you ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies
