If the Yankees fail to make the playoffs, many will point to injuries to the pitching staff that crippled them the entire season: from Phil Hughes to Ian Kennedy to Chien-Ming Wang to Joba Chamberlain to Dan Giese.
Girardi: Pavano could be starter on Saturday

TORONTO - Joe Girardi hasn't ruled out Carl Pavano as a
starter for Saturday. That may come as unwelcome news to those fans who wouldn't count on Pavano to beat a minor-league club, but Pavano and Phil Hughes are the only real options.

Pavano close to return with Yanks

Belittled by New York tabloids that call him "American Idle," disparaged by some teammates for his lack of durability, Carl Pavano could return to the Yankees this weekend.

New York needs a fifth starter on Saturday at Baltimore, and with Joba Chamberlain and Dan Giese on the disabled list, the choice comes down to Pavano or Phil Hughes.

Mike Mussina said in spring training last year that Pavano must show his teammates he wants to pitch.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Carl Pavano, Baltimore Orioles, Joba Chamberlain, Dan Giese, Philip Hughes, Mike Mussina

Who will pitch next for the Yanks - Pavano or Hughes?

True, the Yanks have been decimated by injuries this year, but it looks like Hideki Matsui, Phil Hughes and Carl Pavano (!) are on their way back. There’s even a chance that Pavano could pitch this weekend.

If that happens, not only will Carl beat Hughes back into the rotation, but he will also triumph against Axl Rose, who still hasn’t released “Chinese Democracy,” although it is now rumored that the album could come out this year after all. And everybody in America will get a Dr. Pepper if it does come out.

I wrote about this back in March, and said that Carl Pavano actually pitching in a 2008 Yankee game was the least likely thing to happen this year. So if it does actually happen, I think everybody should get in to see the movie version for “Mamma Mia,” Pavano’s favorite musical, for free.
My friend Andy said the Yanks should have known that Carl was a flake when he requested to get to see “Mamma Mia” on Brian Cashman’s dime ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, New York Yankees, Philip Hughes, Carl Pavano, Chris Russo

Another one bites the dust! Giese headed to DL

Dan Giese is headed to the disabled list with rotator cuff tendonitis in his right shoulder, removing yet another arm from the Yankees’ starting rotation.

Giese left Wednesday’s game with a stiff right shoulder, and while Joe Girardi seemed to think he’d have the righty back in the bullpen by the weekend and then have him for his start on Tuesday, that won’t be the case.

Brian Cashman said that Giese will follow the same rehab course that Joba Chamberlain is on, meaning that he’ll rest his arm for 7-10 days while taking anti-inflammatories, then hopefully begin a throwing program.

Cashman said the Yankees don’t want to use Phil Hughes or Carl Pavano in that spot on Tuesday, so Darrell Rasner will likely get the start in Toronto. Cashman would like to see Hughes get to 100 pitches in the minors before bringing him back, but he plans to speak with Girardi about it before they make a final decision.

A few other notes from the off-day:

Dan Giese will have his shoulder checked out today at a Manhattan hospital, and while Joe Girardi doesn't believe the stiffness that forced the righthander out of Wednesday's game is a big deal, Giese is not so sure.

Pavano or Hughes back soon?

The Yankees don’t need a fifth starter again until Saturday, August 23 in Baltimore. Could Phil Hughes or Carl Pavano be back by then?

Our man Andy Martino just checked in with me from Trenton, where he’s watching Pavano make his fourth (and final??) rehab start.

According to Andy, Pavano made few strides toward a Bronx return with his outing, though it doesn’t look like he’s quite major-league ready.

The first batter for the Bowie Baysox hit a home run, setting the tone for a night in which Pavano allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings. Pavano surrendered seven hits and two homers, struck out three, walked none and hit two batters.

Pavano threw 79 pitches, 50 for strikes; a scout in attendance clocked Pavano’s fastball at 86-89 miles per hour, occasionally touching 90.

As for Hughes, he’s allowed two hits over five innings without walking a batter. Hughes has struck out four, throwing 66 pitches (41 strikes) to this point. His pitch count is expected to be between ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philip Hughes, New York Yankees, Carl Pavano

Phil Hughes: The Nicest Ball Player On The Planet

Earlier this week, I had an amazing experience in the baseball world. While up at my cousins house in Pennsylvania, my brother and I decide to go see a Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yankees game. Of course we knew that rehabbing there right now is none other then Phillip Hughes.
We got to the game very early and scout out the place. We talk to one of the coaches whose autograph we get. We talk to him about Hughes, and he tells us that Hughes is possibly doing the radar gun behind home plate. My brother and I walk away laughing, thinking there was no way that a big name player like Phil could be sitting with the fans doing the radar gun, there would be chaos.
Thinking that it can't hurt, we look behind home plate to see if Hughes is there before the game starts. He isn't there yet, so we wait for him. I walk to the bathroom while my brother waits behind the seats right behind home plate. When I get back, I don't see my brother where he was. I give him a call, and he tells me he is sitting right ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philip Hughes, Josh Hamilton, New York Yankees, Al Reyes, Willie Randolph, Joba Chamberlain

Davidoff: Mets still counting on Pelfrey

We spent so much time calculating projected innings totals
on the other side of the Triboro Bridge, and as it turns out, neither Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes nor Ian Kennedy is going to get a sniff of his established innings ceiling this season.

Yanks' Kennedy Set To Make First Start Since April

I still think the Yankees are okay.
Crazy, right? How can a team that lost their top two pitchers, starting catcher, replacement starting catcher, and DH be okay? Well, here's the thing: they are still in striking distance, and they're still a good team.
And with the news that Ian Kennedy's back, they are even better.
Kennedy has killed Triple-A with a 38/13 K/BB rate, a 2.14 ERA, and a .91 WHIP. With Joba out, Kennedy will need to continue that and I think he can. We need him.
We can still look foward to guys like Phil Hughes and Mark Melancon coming up soon; tonight, however, it's all Ian. I'm so excited I actually got MLB.TV to see the game (I'm around Boston on vacation so it's not on TV). I've picked him up in fantasy leagues and even wasted 15 minutes writing this little stub of an article.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Ian Kennedy, New York Yankees, Al Reyes, Philip Hughes, Mark Melancon

YANKEES INSIDER: Can Kennedy recapture 2007?

Ian Kennedy was supposed to be a mainstay of the Yankees'
rotation this season. Along with Phil Hughes and Joba Chamberlain, Kennedy was expected to give fans a preview of their pitching rotation for years to come.
