Angels shopping for Halladay; Dodgers a 'long shot'

According to the Los Angeles Times, the Angels have resumed their pursuit of Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay.
Los Angeles was among several teams that attempted to acquire Halladay before this past season's July 31 nonwaiver trading deadline, but the righthander finished the season with Toronto.
The newspaper reported new Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopolous likely will ask the Angels for a package that includes a young starting pitcher, perhaps Jered Weaver, Joe Saunders or Ervin Santana. The Angels continue to negotiate with free agent righthander John Lackey as well, though it is believed Lackey will price himself out of the Angels' range.
Meanwhile, a source told the Los Angeles Times that the Dodgers are a "long shot" to trade for Halladay. The Blue Jays reportedly would ask for righthander Chad Billingsley in the Halladay trade, and Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti isn't willing to part with him.

Breaking Down Roy Halladay's Break-Up with the Toronto Blue Jays

So much for staying together for the kids. Now I know what it must feel like for those poor children on Jon & Kate Plus 8 watching their parents go through a bitter custody battle, because it appears the same thing is happening to Roy Halladay and the Blue Jays organization - they're breaking up. The most recent development was Paul Beeston's quote in the New York Post indicating that there is absolutely no chance Halladay will stick around in Toronto following the end of his contract in 2010. " We would like to sign him, he is an original Blue Jay and we have never had a pitcher as good as him...but he is not inclined to sign with us."
At this point in the proverbial marriage between Doc and the Blue Jays, Halladay is living it up as a single man and seeing other people while the Jays have been desecrated to sleeping on the couch while living on a steady diet of cheezies and "Who's the Boss" reruns. It's unfortunate that it had to come to this, but it's very rare that an ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Toronto Blue Jays, Roy Halladay

Halladay Will Not Re-Sign With Toronto

ESPN.com reports that Roy Halladay will not re-sign with the Toronto Blue Jays after his contract expires at the end of the 2010 season assuming that he is still a Blue Jay for this coming season.
Toronto went public during the summer that they would listen to offers for the right-handed pitcher, and it ultimately got to a point to no return for the Blue Jays.
Halladay wants to play for a winner, and that's not Toronto. At this point in his career, he's made enough money. Every player's goal is to win a World Series, and Halladay knows that won't happen with the Jays.
He's not the kind of guy that would use the media to help him get out of a bad situation. Throughout the craziness that was July, Halladay never once said that he wanted to be traded, or that he wanted out of Toronto.
Instead, Halladay said all the right things, but if you can read body language, it shouted "get me out of here". After the trade deadline past and he was still a Jay, you could see the disappointment in his face. ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Toronto Blue Jays, Roy Halladay, Philadelphia Phillies

Philadelphia Phillies Should Get Back in on Roy Halladay

So, last week, the rumors resurfaced that the Phillies are still trying to acquire Roy Halladay from the Toronto Blue Jays, and the memories of the hours leading up to the trade deadline in July relinquished.
All throughout the middle month of the season, all the talk surrounding Major League Baseball was whether or not Toronto would stick to their word and trade Halladay.
Then general manager J.P. Ricciardi said that he would listen to offers for the right-hander at the start of the month, and Philadelphia had the need and the financial flexibility to make a blockbuster.
For a couple of weeks, Ricciardi played a game of chicken with the Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr . as everyone in Ricciardi's position would. Toronto was asking for the farm while the Phils weren't willing to meet the demand.
In the end, the Phillies ended up acquiring another former Cy Young winner in Cliff Lee for far less than they would have had to give up to get Halladay, who isn't much better than Lee.

Halladay trade market could be heating up

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to the Cubs' website, the team has spoken to the Blue Jays about the possibility of trading for ace Roy Halladay.
However, the website is quick to point out that Halladay might not fit into Chicago's payroll and overall plans. Halladay will earn $15.75 million in 2010 and also will cost any team trading for him a valuable bundle of prospects. According to the Cubs' website, the team is reluctant to part with shortstop prospect Starlin Castro.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers and Blue Jays also have had discussions about Halladay, according to a Yahoo! Sports report.
Finally, the New York Post reports the Yankees will monitor the Halladay situation. They have the prospects and young major league talent to interest Toronto, and they also have the money to sign Halladay to a contract extension. The same is true of the A.L. East-rival Red Sox.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs, Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees

Talent, first. An ocean of coin to follow.

Come To Think Of It: Toronto GM Calling Cubs About Roy Halladay

According to MLB.com's Carrie Muskat , Toronto Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos has contacted the Cubs about a possible trade of star pitcher Roy Halladay to the Cubs.
While on the surface it would appear to be a very unlikely scenario, it does at least bear some discussion. If for no other reason than Halladay is one of the best pitchers in baseball. And moving to the National League would only make him better, in all likelihood.
Look, it's a long shot, to be sure. First off, the Cubs probably don't have the payroll room to do this unless Toronto is willing to take one of our huge salaries in return. Second, Halladay's contract is up after this season, so would it be prudent for them to trade away the farm just to obtain one year of his services?
Anthopoulos has reportedly stated he is willing to allow the trading team a period of time to work out a contract extension. That would likely be a prerequisite for any trade, though with all the long-term contracts the club already has, I can't see ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, Chicago Cubs, Toronto Blue Jays

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to a report on SI.com, the Yankees recently called the Blue Jays to inquire about ace Roy Halladay.
New Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos has hinted that he would deal his ace to a team within the division, thus giving the Yankees and Red Sox a more realistic chance to acquire the former A.L. Cy Young winner. There also have been indications that Anthopoulos might allow an interested team to negotiate a contract extension with Halladay before trading for him.
SI.com reports both the Yankees and Red Sox made a run at Halladay before the July 31 nonwaiver trading deadline. However, then-general manager J.P. Ricciardi wasn't willing to move Halladay to a division rival. Because any team trading for Halladay now will get only one season from him -- barring an extension -- Toronto's asking price likely has dropped.
Halladay was 17-10 with a 2.79 ERA with nine complete games and four ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Chase Utley

Jays' GM willing to give teams time to talk contract with Halladay before making trade

                    Sporting News staff reports

In an apparent departure from his predecessor, Toronto Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos will give teams interested in trading for ace right-hander Roy Halladay a window to discuss a contract extension with the pitcher.

The Blue Jays' Web site reports Anthopoulos would allow teams to talk to Halladay about an extension if it means the interested team will improve its trade offer. Halladay is signed through next season.

Former GM J.P. Ricciardi opposed the idea of a contract window when he was shopping Halladay last summer.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays, J.P.
Another Roy Halladay Cy Young Calibre Season

I hate to say it...but for the fourth year in a row, Roy Halladay crafted another Cy Young calibre season and had nothing to show for it.

The Baseball Writers Association of America did the right thing by giving the Cy Young to Zack Greinke. Though not your typical runaway candidate, Greinke did everything right on a team that played so horribly wrong throughout the season. Greinke didn't have an impressive win/loss record, however he certainly made up for it all other categories.
The voting went down pretty much as expected, but I would have liked to see Doc finish a little higher than fifth place. Ultimately, I guess it doesn't really matter because you either win the Cy Young award or you don't—there isn't any purple fifth-place-finish ribbon like there was at the track & field meet in public school. Out of all the votes, the one that stands out like a sore thumb was the ballot which included Justin Verlander as a first place vote. This is just another example of a voter not digging ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Cy Young, Roy Halladay, Zack Greinke, Toronto Blue Jays

For Roy Halladay, it marked the fourth year in a row that he finished in the top five in balloting for the Cy Young. The ace is the type of pitcher every team covets and one who could potentially be had in a blockbuster trade this offseason.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, Cy Young

Time for Roy Halladay Suitors To "Suit Up"

It's a bitter pill to swallow, but I'm come to grips with the fact that Roy Halladay is likely not going to be a Blue Jay for much longer. The poor guy was dangled like chum in front of hungry sharks at the trade deadline, and now Alex Anthopoulous has the daunting task of trading away the franchise's best player. By this point, I'm sure Alex Anthopoulos and Paul Beeston have narrowed down the candidates to which they are willing to trade Roy Halladay to. Ultimately, Doc has the final the say the matter so that means any potential suitors must be contendors and give him a chance at winning. Below is what I believe to be the short list of candidates for Roy Halladay: Los Angeles Angels The Angels seem to be the front-runners on the short-list to land Halladay in a trade. They have handily won the AL West the past five out of six years and would give Doc arguably the best chance to pitch in the playoffs. Whether or not John Lackey walks away from the Angels, they could definitely ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Roy Halladay, Toronto Blue Jays, Philadelphia Phillies

The Dodgers Would Be Foolish to Give Up on Chad Billingsley

The most valuable asset in baseball is good pitching. Good, young, controllable pitching could be likened to winning the lottery for a million dollars, and when you go to cash in your ticket, you find out you actually won five million.
To call the 2009 season a roller coaster for Chad Billingsley would be an understatement. He was named to his first All-Star game in July, but he also had his career-worst year statistically.
Things took an even worse turn for Billingsley when Dodgers manager Joe Torre only used him once in the team's two playoff series. He didn't make an appearance against the Cardinals and pitched once out of the bullpen against the Phillies.
This was coming off a drubbing the Phillies gave him in the 2008 playoffs. In two starts, he lasted only five innings while giving up 11 runs on seven walks and 12 hits.
Several reports are now surfacing that Billingsley is on the trading block. It's rumored he could be the centerpiece of a trade with the Blue Jays that would bring Roy ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Los Angeles Dodgers, Chad Billingsley, Roy Halladay

MLB Winter Trade Market: Starting Pitching

This winter's free agent market for starting pitching in Major League Baseball is especially thin, with John Lackey being the only real headliner.

Other pitchers, like Rich Harden and Randy Wolf, might fill out the middle or bottom of a team's rotation, but some teams are looking to upgrade the front of their rotation.

That's where the trade market begins.

The economy has stripped teams of a lot of the financial flexibility, and big contracts are becoming as unpopular as ever. There also happens to be a fairly large number of pitchers in the final years of their contracts, making them potential short term fixes for team that feel they're close to taking the next step.

Let's take a look at some pitchers that will probably get traded at some point before August (Roy Halladay) and some other arms that might become available.
Will Roy be on the Yankees' Halladay wish list?

The Yankees will hold their organizational meetings early next week, and from the sounds of things, they’ll have plenty to talk about - most of it involving the potential trade market.

Teams all around the majors are putting some of their best players on the block, looking to slash payroll this winter. That could create a unique opportunity for the Yankees, who are in position to strike if they want to.

The Tigers will be on the prowl, looking to deal away at least one player this winter. There’s been a lot of buzz in New York about the possibility of the Yankees acquiring Curtis Granderson, but to me, this would be a mistake given what Detroit would likely be asking for. Granderson is a good player and an even better person, but as we saw this year, pitching is what wins championships. Besides, go take a look at Granderson’s numbers the past three seasons - he was an absolute superstar in 2007, but he’s declined in each of the past two years. Not a good sign.

CHICAGO -- The world champion Yankees will inquire about superstar pitcher Roy Halladay, setting up a potential bidding competition that didn't exist last summer when now-deposed Jays GM J.P.
