Buster Posey's Tour Hits Paradise

Ever Since he signed his $6.2 million signing bonus, former Florida State catcher and San Francisco Giants uber prospect Buster Posey has been a little busy.
Alright, not a little. Basically he has been all over the west coast.
After signing, Posey was off to the Arizona Rookie League, where he hit .385 in seven games. He added three doubles, a triple and his first professional home run.
Posey then got the call to Short-Season Salem-Keizar, where he played all but three games while trying to aid the Volcanoes try and win the Northwest League title. He hit .273, two RBI, with two of his three hits being for extra bases.
Posey's third stop in less-than two weeks took him to San Jose, where he joined his second playoff run in a weeks time.
So, after being in two playoff series and three different leagues in less-than two weeks, it was time for a break, right? Nope.
Posey went back to Arizona and was in attendance at Chase Field to watch future batterymate Tim Lincecum. He was in attendance ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, San Francisco Giants

2008 San Francisco Giants Awards

With the 2008 San Francisco Giants' season coming to an end this past weekend, it made sense to look back at what was and give out some awards to those who did well and a few who didn’t really do so hot. Yeah, the team had one of the worst offenses around and finished 20 games under .500, but there were some things to smile about. Tim Lincecum is a lot of people’s, including Bleacher Report's, choice to win the National League Cy Young. Emmanuel Burriss and Pablo Sandoval have locked up starting jobs for the 2009 season, and Fred Lewis finally got consistent playing time and showed what he could do. MVP – Bengie Molina He had never hit cleanup consistently in his career, and he proved he could do it with ease. Molina drove in 95 runs, 25 more than Aaron Rowand. His 95 RBI accounted for 15 percent of the Giants’ runs this season. More importantly, he did a great job handling a young starting staff and is also a class person, winning the WillieMac Award two-straight ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, San Francisco Giants

Where Are the Oakland A's and San Francisco Giants?

The baseball playoffs are here and if you are a fan of Bay Area baseball teams—you have nothing to root for during the remainder of October.
The Giants were finally put out of their misery after 162 games of the worst baseball I have ever seen. The final game against the Dodgers was like watching the final scenes of "Old Yeller" (that sick doggy snuff film produced by Disney)—you were sad to see the season end but you were just happy to not have to see the Giants embarrass themselves any longer.
Oakland's season was not much better. They came into 2008 by trading away every good player they have ever had then proceeded to look like a decent team until choking away the season in the final month and a half.
So after watching the embarrassing debacle that was Bay Area baseball all year and not being rewarded with a playoff team, I want to give you people a couple of reasons to watch the playoffs this year anyways.
1) The extension of the Cubs curse. Although the Cubs started to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Oakland Athletics, San Francisco Giants

Chicago Cubs' First Loss Is Not a Big Deal...Yet

Well, it looks like the Cubs are doomed again! One bitter loss and the sky is falling! Hold the phone! History doesn't bode well for losers of the first game of an N.L. Division Series, but the media doesn't tell you the history in the A.L.
Only two teams in the National League have come back from a first loss to win the series and advance to the NLCS. Since 1995, they are: The Mets of 2000, and the Marlins of 2003.
San Francisco was down 2-1 in 2002 and came back and won their series. Look closely, these teams advanced to the World Series! Maybe this is the wake up call the Cubs needed, or perhaps it is the beginning of another postseason dive.
Just wait, look at the A.L. record. 12 years in a row there was at least one of the division series won by a team that lost its first game. 14 in all, over that time period. Out of those 14 series, seven of them advanced the World Series. The better team prevailed in the end. The Yankees were in this position five times and won.
Yes, it all rides ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Chicago Cubs, NLCS, Florida Marlins, San Francisco Giants

Looking Ahead to a Giant Offseason

The 2007-08 offseason for the San Francisco Giants was not flashy by any means whatsoever. With Aaron Rowand as their only notable acquisition, the team seemed to be making it clear to the fans that the upcoming season would be a showcase for their prospects.
Spring training was a harrowing experience to follow - Barry Zito struggled heavily, Noah Lowry walked nine in a game and revealed an arm injury, Kevin Frandsen had a season-ending injury as well, and no one seemed to be swinging the bat very well at all. Even though the Giants finished the 2008 season a meek 72-90, many fans were pleasantly surprised with the competitiveness and heart that the team showed. In their first season without slugger Barry Bonds, the Giants actually improved their record (which was a disappointing 71-91 the year before).
Without a doubt, the "rebuilding year" that was 2008 revealed exciting young players such as Fred Lewis, Emmanuel Burriss, John Bowker, and Pablo Sandoval, thus building a sense of excitement for ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, San Francisco Giants, Matt Cain, Brian Sabean, Prince Fielder, Matt Holliday

Final Weekend For The Giants Brings Back Memories

The Giants season is over. That could have been said a few weeks ago, and was, by many people, but today it finally came to a close. It waited this long because there were still a couple things that had to be done before 2008 was through. There were ovations to give, and I have awards to give out.
Kevin Frandsen made his improbable return for the last two games of the season, and grounded out to a rowdy ovation on Sunday. Frandsen was a fan favorite at the end of last year, and went into Spring Training as the main competition for Ray Durham, now with the playoff-bound Brewers. His season was presumably over when he ruptured his Achilles running around the bases in March, and wasn’t supposed to have come back to the field until winter.
It was Peter Magowan’s last hurrah as chief executive. Magowan stepped in, with Harmon Burns, and bought the Giants for about $100 million, preventing a move to the St. Petersburg area that seemed imminent. His work, from signing Barry Bonds to ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, San Francisco Giants

Tim Lincecum Deals In Season Finale: Who Woulda Thunk It?

For a game that meant a whole lot of nothing, the season finale for the San Francisco Giants meant a whole lot to Tim Lincecum.
In his final start of 2008, Lincecum did what he did best...deal a gem.
Lincecum (18-5) finished with 13 strikeouts, adding to his season total of 265. With those 265 strikeouts, he became the first Giant to lead the Major Leagues in that category since Bill Voiselle had 161 in 1944.
And when asked about it after the game, he answered in typical Lincecum fashion.
"That's cool. That's all I can really say," said Lincecum. "It's a lot of hard work, trying to work on my pitches and throw them for strikes."
What might be as important as leading the world in strikeouts this season was the ability to bounce back and put good thoughts back into the Cy Young voters' minds after one of his worst outings of the season on Tuesday against Colorado.
"Right now, all I can do is hope and wait," Lincecum said.
Lincecum got off to a hot start, striking out the first nine ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Tim Lincecum, San Francisco Giants, Cy Young

Joe Torre's announcement hardly came as a surprise: right-hander Derek Lowe will start Game 1 of the NL division series for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Lowe will be followed by righty and 16-game winner Chad Billingsley in Game 2 and then right-hander Hiroki Kuroda, who has a 9-10 record.
Disputable Call Gives Giants Molina Homer

San Francisco Giant catcher Bengie Molina was credited with the second replay reversal homerun in Major League Baseball history under their new replay rules in Friday night's series opener against the Dodgers.
I am on record with my disapproval with the way Commissioner Selig has implemented replay. In addition to Bud's methodology, I have issues with the way some fields are allowed to be laid out.
Right field in San Francisco is one of those places. There is no definitive line for umpires to be able to call home runs. Dark brick transfers to dark green metal. While it may be ascetically pleasing, it is difficult to tell what is a home run and what is not.
There needs to be a yellow stripe at the bottom so the umps can be able to determine with speed and certainty what is and is not a homer.
While the replay seemed to this reporter to hit high on the bricks and should not be called a home run, I freely admit my vision is shaded Dodger blue.
Replay was sold by MLB flacks as being ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, San Francisco Giants, Bengie Molina, Jose Molina, Los Angeles Dodgers, Bud Selig

J.T Snow To Play Final Game and Retire As an S.F Giant

When I woke up this morning and headed on over to the San Francisco Giant's official team website, I read the box score from last night's game and then went back to the main page to look at the standings for the season. It was then on the ticker at the top of the page something flashed and caught my eye.
It read "Snow to Take Field for Retirement Honor". I had no idea what it meant so I went to the article and lo and behold, I read that Giants' fan favorite third baseman J.T Snow was going to come out of retirement (since 2006) to play one final game so he could retire as a member of the San Francisco Giants.
The only thing about this honor that the Giants are giving him is that Snow isn't actual going to play today. According to the team website, Snow will take the field with the rest of the team and before Matt Cain, today's starter, throws his first pitch, snow will be taken out.
Although I would like to see him get an at-bat or two, the gesture alone by the Giants was extremely classy and ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, San Francisco Giants, J.T.
