The San Francisco Giants Drafting Barry Bonds In 1982

ONCE AGAIN this past weekend, with the Pittsburgh Pirates in town, I thought how nice it would be if the Giants had Barry Bonds. The Giants drafted Bonds, remember, in 1982, their second choice in the draft of high school and college players. They couldn’t sign him because Tom Haller, then the general manager, wouldn’t go past $70,000. Bonds, the son of former Giants outfielder Bobby Bonds, wanted $75,000. When he didn’t get it, he went to college instead.
A week ago I posted this item on the McCovey Chronicles site, but I thought I'd reprint it here too, to see what a more diverse audience has to say about what shape Bonds' career would have taken had he signed with the Giants in 1982, not 1992. For some context, I'll also add links to posts about Bonds in 1974 , 1985 , and 1986 .
San Francisco: A nice spot for Jason Bay; Why the Giants Must Sign Him

Word around the streets of MLB is that free-agent hitter's don't put the San Francisco Giants anywhere near the top of their list because AT&T Park isn't a "hitters" park.
Well, if it isn't a "hitters" park, then how come Pablo "Kung Fu Panda" Sandoval hit a blistering .361 at AT&T, and just .301 on the road?
How come the entire Giants offense fared much better at home then on the road this past season?
AT&T Park is a great place to hit, just not for home-runs. However, the aforementioned Sandoval did hit 13 of his 25 home-runs in San Francisco, one more than he hit on the road.
Therefore, AT&T park as nothing but a mere "pitcher's park" is far from the truth. In all honesty, if you've attended more than a handful of games at the most gorgeous stadium in baseball, you would know that AT&T park is a pretty fair yard.
The only spot in which a true home-runs don't go out of the park is right-center field. From center field to the left field foul pole, the outfield wall at ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, San Francisco Giants, Jason Bay

Nationals hire special adviser to GM

The Washington Nationals today named Ron Schueler special adviser to the general manager and promoted Bill Singer to director of professional scouting. From the news release: A 42-year baseball veteran, Schueler joins the Nationals after serving the previous two seasons as Senior Advisor of Player Personnel for the San Francisco Giants. Schueler is perhaps best known for an 11-year stint (1990-2000) as General Manager of the Chicago White Sox, during which his clubs compiled an 817-734 record and a .527 winning percentage while finishing first or second in the AL Central or West eight times, including a pair of division titles in 1993 and 2000. In 2000, his final season as General Manager, Schueler's White Sox were named "Organization of the Year" by Baseball America. In addition to his tenure as White Sox General Manager, Schueler has served in various special assistant capacities with the Cubs, Cardinals and Athletics,

Bush chatted briefly with several players after walking off the field and watched the game in a private box with former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, San Francisco Giants

Sanchez's San Francisco Signing Shows Pirates What Might Have Been

Freddy Sanchez is a good "sport." The Pittsburgh Pirates' management is not.
Sanchez re-signed with the San Francisco Giants at a total of $12 million for two years, or $6 million per. This compares to the $10 million that FanGraphs values him at for 2009 alone.
My readers know that I would have gladly offered Sanchez $12 million for ONE year. Given a limping second half, after his strong first half, that may represent an overpayment for his baseball contributions. It would probably fairly values his baseball AND civic contributions to the city.
But Sanchez was willing to sign for much less than $12 million per. We now know that he would have signed for six.
Even if we "padded" the deal to $8 million per (as a very shrewd hotel man named Conrad Hilton would do in "strategic" situations), Sanchez would still be a bargain.
But the Pirates tried to chisel him down to $10 million over two years or $5 million per, and wouldn't listen to a counteroffer from him before trading him for Tim ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Pittsburgh Pirates, San Francisco Giants, Freddy Sanchez

Giants reportedly have interest in Jason Bay

                    Sporting News staff reports

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the Giants are expected to make a run at Red Sox outfielder Jason Bay when he becomes a free agent this offseason.

Bay hit .267 and set career highs with 36 homers and 119 RBIs this season. He would bring some much-needed offense to a club that finished last in the majors in on-base percentage (.309) and OPS (.699), 29th in homers (122) and 26th in runs (657).

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, San Francisco Giants, Jason Bay, Boston Red Sox

Here's a Thought: Optimizing the Oakland Athletics' 2010 Rotation

As the A's continue to build what they (and all of us fans) hope is going to be a dynasty that peaks in 3-7 years from now, the core of the team is going to be the starting pitching, which has been the symbol of the A's since Barry Zito, Mark Mulder, and Tim Hudson were on the staff.

However, many of the young future cornerstones, especially Trevor Cahill and Vince Mazzaro, struggled in 2009.

The A's are presumably looking to improve next year, as the "building" begins to take hold. Thus, the rotation will need to improve on 2009's struggles.

SInce there are so few guarantees as to who will break camp in the rotation, I decided to take an admittedly premature look and suggest an Opening Day 2010 rotation.
San Francisco Treat: Freddy Sanchez Proves It Isn't All About the Money

Although it's making headlines, Freddy Sanchez' new two-year contract with the San Francisco Giants doesn't really qualify as news. Most close observers of the team expected the second baseman to ink a deal in the wake of his disappointing stretch with the club.
When I wrote the longtime Pittsburgh Pirate would re-up with San Francisco, it was no revolutionary proclamation. In fact, you could argue I was flying the Captain Obvious flag. The organization simply gave up too much for an almost negligible return on the investment.
It's been said elsewhere and I'll echo it here—the Giants' brass parted with a potential gem.
Tim Alderson, the right-handed starting pitcher used to pry Sanchez away from the Buccos, could make that deal one of Brian Sabean's all-time blunders depending on how he develops. Based on what the faithful were told as the kid was tearing through the farm system, he may have the kind of talent that just shouldn't be traded. He's hit a bit of a rough patch in his learning ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, San Francisco Giants, Freddy Sanchez

Brett Favre's return to Green Bay is certain to draw more than its share of coverage on Sunday, but New York and Philadelphia will have themselves quite a sports day to enjoy.

At 1:00 p.m., the Giants and Eagles will play at Lincoln Financial Field, then at 7:57 p.m., the Yankees and Phillies will meet just a few hundred yards away in Game 3 of the World Series.

The good folks over at Bodog.com passed along some entertaining prop bets surrounding the two New York-Philly showdowns.

Which will be higher on Sunday?
Eli Manning TD Passes vs. the Eagles Even
Derek Jeter Hits vs. the Phillies -130

Well it's time to take a look at the worst starters the A's have brought out on the field just to note it's only for players who have been a member for the Oakland A's, not the previous stops before Oakland.

Former Grambling star Essex Johnson ran for the tiebreaking touchdown in the third quarter of the Bengals' 1975 victory over the Patriots.

If limited history is any indication, this World Series is going to be a classic, and you can thank the NFL’s schedule maker for it.

With the Giants visiting the Eagles on Sunday, hours before the Yankees take on the Phillies in Game 3 of the Fall Classic, this will be the third time that the World Series combatants’ civic counterparts have squared off on an NFL gridiron on the same day.

The last time that NFL teams from World Series cities faced off on the same day as a Fall Classic game was October 12, 1975, when the Cincinnati Bengals beat the visiting New England Patriots, 27-10, and the Reds won Game 2 of the World Series, 3-2, at Fenway Park. The Reds went on to win the World Series in seven games, surviving in spite of Carlton Fisk’s winning homer in Game 6.

The Yankees and Giants were involved in same-day action against the ...

Find more top sports news, videos, and blogs on BallHype: MLB, Philadelphia Phillies, San Francisco Giants, New York Yankees
